BOSTON (AP) — Philip Tomasino scored a tiebreaking goal in the third period, Tristan Jarry made 31 saves and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Boston Bruins 2-1. Tomasino’s first goal of the season with 12:34 remaining in the game came when the forward walked in from the left circle after the Bruins failed to clear the puck. Pittsburgh’s Rickard Rakell scored his ninth goal of the season with less than a second remaining in the second period. Charlie Coyle scored and Jeremy Swayman made 33 saves for Boston.

Both Fort Cherry and Thomas Jefferson had successful seasons come to an end Friday. Thomas Jefferson could not follow up on a successful first half lead of 16-3, and bowed to Lampeter-Strasburgh 20-16 in the PIAA Class 4 Semifinals. Sophmore RB Tyler Eber ran for 2 touchdowns for TJ. The Jaguars finish the season at 13-1. Fort Cherry couldn’t overcome a potent Port Allegany running game and took a 46-8 defeat in the PIAA 1A semifinals Friday night. Aiden Bliss ran for over 300 yard and 5 touchdowns to send the Gators to the championship game. The Rangers finish the season at 14-1. In other PIAA action Friday, Avenworth defeated Penn Cambria 16-6 to advance to the 3A finals to face Northwestern Lehigh next Saturday. In 5A action, Bishop McDevitt bested Pine Richland 28-14. Central Clarion shut out South Park in Class 2A by the score of 55-0.

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Eberflus has been fired by the Chicago Bears, one day after botching a timeout in a loss to Detroit. Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will serve as interim coach, the Bears said in a statement. Eberflus was 14-32 in two-plus seasons with the Bears, who fell to 4-8 with their sixth straight loss on Thursday. The Bears began the season eyeing a playoff spot following an offensive overhaul but are now last in the NFC North. Eberflus’ 14-31 record in 2 1/2 seasons ranks among the worst in the history of the founding NFL franchise.

DETROIT (AP) — Jared Goff threw two touchdown passes to Sam LaPorta, Jake Bates made three field goals in the first half and the Detroit Lions held off the Chicago Bears 23-20 to extend their winning streak to 10 games. The Lions snapped a seven-game losing streak on Thanksgiving. The Bears had the ball in Lions territory late in the game with a chance to drive for a game-tying field goal or go-ahead touchdown, but they blew the opportunity. Caleb Williams threw an incomplete pass as time expired from the Detroit 41 after being sacked with about 30 seconds left, allowing time to run off the clock even though Chicago had one more timeout.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Jordan Love threw two touchdown passes to Jayden Reed and the Green Bay Packers capitalized on a fast start to beat Miami 30-17 and snap the Dolphins’ three-game winning streak. Green Bay has won three straight and seven of its last eight. Miami continued its recent history of struggling in cold weather. The kickoff temperature at Lambeau Field was 27 degrees with 10 mph winds, light flurries and a wind chill of 18. The Dolphins have lost their past 12 regular-season or postseason games in which the temperature at kickoff has been below 40 degrees.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — DeMarvion Overshown returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown, Rico Dowdle ran for a score in his first career 100-yard game and the Dallas Cowboys held on for a 27-20 Thanksgiving Day victory over the New York Giants. Cooper Rush threw a TD pass, and Dowdle finished with 112 yards. The Cowboys ended a six-game home losing streak going back to a wild-card loss to Green Bay last season. Drew Lock started in place of the injured Tommy DeVito and lost a fumble after Overshown’s dynamic pick-6 in a seventh consecutive loss for the Giants. New York’s eighth consecutive loss to Dallas also eliminated the Giants from playoff contention..

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Rust had two goals and an assist to help the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-4. Blake Lizotte scored after missing five games with a concussion, while Kevin Hayes had a power-play goal and Rickard Rakell also scored for Pittsburgh. Erik Karlsson had three assists, while Sidney Crosby had two as the Penguins built a 4-1 lead through one period. Tristan Jarry stopped 25 shots for the Penguins. The Canucks trailed 5-2 entering the third period before Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson cut it to a one-goal deficit. Pius Suter and Aatu Raty also scored for the Canucks. Arturs Silovs made 18 saves.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boise State advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West women’s volleyball tournament by beating Utah State on Wednesday night. But the Broncos announced later they would not play Friday against San Jose State. San Jose State received six forfeit victories because of boycotts from Mountain West opponents. The Spartans are seeded second in the conference tournament and received a first-round bye. No. 6 seed Boise State forfeited both of its regular-season matches to the Spartans.

The expanded Big Ten is poised to be a major player in this season’s College Football Playoff. The 18-team conference had three of the top-four teams in the AP poll this week — No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State. A one-loss Indiana team is ranked 10th but is still very much a contender to make the playoff. Indiana’s rise has been perhaps the Big Ten’s biggest story this season. Much of the spotlight was on newcomers Oregon, Southern California, UCLA and Washington. But aside from the top-ranked Ducks, that foursome has struggled to impress.
