Bryce Large controlled the ball out of a scramble, found a small opening and buried a shot from about 12 yards out with just 25 seconds to play, lifting Charleroi past Bentworth, 2-1, in the PIAA Soccer semifinals. The win moves Charleroi to Saturday’s state championship match against Delco Christian, a penalty kick winner. After more than 30 minutes, Arlo McIntyre gave Charleroi a 1-0 lead, banging home a loose ball in front from a corner kick. A little over halfway through the second half, Ryan Colbert tied the match on a penalty kick after being hauled down in the box. Bentworth kept the momentum for a few minutes but Charleroi tilted the field and kept play in Bentworth’s end for most of the last 4 minutes of the match. The scramble near the top of the penalty box had lasted more than a minute when Large tipped the ball, jumped between a pair of defenders and fired the game-winner past goal keeper DJ Hays, triggering an uproar from the Cougars’ fans. Charleroi won twice in the regular season against Bentworth with the Bearcats turning the tables in the WPIAL Final. Bentworth’s season ends at 20-3, Charleroi heads to Cumberland Valley with a 21-1 record.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Sidney Crosby recorded his 16th career hat trick, scoring twice in the third period, rallying the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 for their league-leading fifth straight win. Crosby extended his point streak to nine games with the 558th, 559th and 560th goals of his career, also adding an assist. Jake Guentzel and Erik Karlsson each contributed a goal and an assist, and Tristan Jarry stopped 28 shots in his fourth consecutive win. Kirill Marchenko, Yegor Chinakhov and Alexandre Texier scored, and Elvis Merzlikins stopped 38 for Columbus, which has lost six straight and two in a row at home.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Brandon Hyde was voted American League Manager of the Year after guiding the Baltimore Orioles to an AL-best 101 victories just two years after a 110-loss season. Miami’s Skip Schumaker won the National League award in voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Hyde led Baltimore out of a difficult rebuild in which the Orioles improved to 83-79 in 2022 and he finished second in voting to Cleveland’s Terry Francona. Hyde earned 27 of 30 first-place votes this year. Schumaker received eight first-place votes, three more than runner-up Craig Counsell, who left Milwaukee last week to manage the Chicago Cubs.

Rory McIlroy has abruptly resigned from the PGA Tour board. His decision comes as the tour is trying to finalize an agreement to create a new commercial enterprise involving Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund. McIlroy has been the biggest voice opposing Saudi-funded LIV Golf. He has spent the last five years involved in tour business during some turbulent times. That includes dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and most recently the threat and then partnership with Saudi’s national wealth fund. McIlroy was the first international player to serve on the policy board. He ends his season in Dubai this week on the European tour.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Wil Lutz got a do-over and kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired, and the Denver Broncos won their third straight by rallying for a 24-22 victory over the sloppy, turnover-prone Buffalo Bills. Lutz got a second chance after he missed wide right with four seconds remaining from 41 yards, but the play was negated when Buffalo was flagged for having 12 players on the field. The Broncos improved to 4-5 and have won three straight and four of six since a 70-20 loss at Miami. The Bills dropped to 5-5 following an outing in which they turned the ball over four times, with quarterback Josh Allen throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.

PHOENIX (AP) – Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll were both unanimous selections for MLB’s Rookie of the Year awards on Monday night, with Henderson winning the honor in the American League and Carroll earning the National League award. The well-rounded stars used power, speed and defense to help their respective franchises to the playoffs after both teams lost 110 games just two seasons ago. It’s just the fifth time overall and the first time since 2017 that both the AL and NL selections were unanimous. Aaron Judge won that year for the Yankees while Cody Bellinger won for the Dodgers.

Kansas remained at No. 1 in the first Associated Press men’s college basketball poll of the season. The Jayhawks received 51 first-place votes from a media panel and were followed by Purdue, Arizona, Marquette and Connecticut. Arizona had the biggest jump from the preseason poll, moving up nine spots after beating No. 9 Duke on the road. No. 24 James Madison moved into the AP Top 25 for the first time following a road win over No. 18 Michigan State.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jaylen Warren and Najee Harris combined for 183 yards rushing and two touchdowns and the Pittsburgh Steelers edged the Green Bay Packers 23-19. The Steelers improved to 6-3 with the win heading into a pivotal stretch that includes road games at AFC North rivals Cleveland and Cincinnati. Jordan Love threw for 289 yards and two scores for the Packers but also had two passes picked off in the final four minutes. Green Bay dropped to 3-6 with the loss.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are running up wins, and running out of healthy inside linebackers. A week after Cole Holcomb’s season ended with a knee injury, veteran Kwon Alexander is going to join Holcomb on injured reserve after sustaining a “serious” left leg injury in the first quarter of a 23-19 win over Green Bay. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Alexander was being evaluated but the prognosis was “not promising.”
