NEW YORK (AP) — Two games into this postseason, those big-money deals for Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodón haven’t paid any October dividends for the New York Yankees. Judge mustered little at the plate again Monday night and Rodón failed to last four innings in his first playoff start with New York during a 4-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals that squared their best-of-five AL Division Series at one apiece. Game 3 is Wednesday night in Kansas City. Given a 1-0 lead going into the fourth, Rodón immediately squandered it by serving up a leadoff homer to Salvador Perez on a 2-0 slider that left the $162 million pitcher shaking his head. Judge is 1 for 7 with four strikeouts and no RBIs in the series.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer off Cleveland’s All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Guardians 3-0 in Game 2 to even their AL Division Series at one game apiece. Carpenter connected for a 423-foot shot with two outs off Clase, who had not given up a run since Aug. 30 and led the league with 47 saves. Detroit ace Tarik Skubal pitched seven shutout innings. Carpenter’s homer was the first runs of the series for the Tigers, who have been finding ways to win for months. They’re at it again and will now head home to Comerica Park for Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Thursday with a chance to advance.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — No. 22 Pittsburgh is off to the program’s best start since 1991. The Panthers are 5-0 heading into a visit from new ACC member Cal. Pitt’s rise has been fueled by a new-look offense led by Alabama transfer quarterback Eli Holstein and undersized running back Desmond Reid. The 5-foot-8 Reid is second in the nation in all-purpose yards while Holstein, a redshirt freshman, is averaging three touchdown passes a game. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi says he’s encouraged by his team’s start but says the Panthers aren’t getting caught up in the attention their hot start has produced. Next up for Pitt is a visit from new ACC member California.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dak Prescott hit Jalen Tolbert with a 4-yard touchdown with 20 seconds remaining and the Dallas Cowboys slipped past the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-17 early Monday The Cowboys (3-2) won their second straight after Prescott overcame a mistake-filled night to lead a 70-yard drive that ended with Prescott finding a lunging Tolbert just across the goal line on fourth down. Prescott threw for 352 yards to go with two touchdowns, two interceptions and a fumble. Pittsburgh lost its second straight on a night it mustered just 226 yards of total offense to drop to 3-2. The start was delayed nearly 90 minutes due to severe weather, with the game ending at 12:59 a.m. EDT.

PITTSBURGH — (WPXI) – After winning in Chapel Hill for the first time ever on Saturday, Pitt earned a spot in the AP’s Top 25 college football poll. Pitt rallied as a team to win on the road and keep their undefeated season alive on Saturday. It’s the first time since 1991 they’ve gone 5-0. Pitt has been steadily gaining AP Poll votes since Week 4, but this was the first week they made it into the Top 25, landing at 22 on the list. This week’s AP poll is full of upheaval after shocking losses for several teams, including Alabama. The Crimson Tide fell from the top spot to No. 7 after losing to Vanderbilt, a team that before Saturday night had never beaten an opponent that was ranked in the top 5. Michigan lost to Washington and fell from No. 10 to No. 24. Missouri lost to Texas A&M and fell from No. 9 to No. 21. Texas replaced Alabama in the top spot, taking 52 of 61 first place votes. Ohio State, which rose a spot to No. 2, got the other nine first place votes.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nick Castellanos ripped a winning two-out single off Tylor Megill that scored Trea Turner and sent the Philadelphia Phillies to a dizzying 7-6 win over the New York Mets and evened the NL Division Series at one game apiece. Castellanos tossed his helmet and was mobbed by teammates on the infield as a game that seemed to slip away one inning earlier turned into one more comeback for the NL East champions. Game 3 is Tuesday in New York, the Mets’ first home game since Sept. 22.

Owen Petrisek ran 16 times for 96 yards, and set up the game-winning touchdown, as Washington & Jefferson College beat Westminster, 21-14, Saturday afternoon. Moments after the Titans tied the game, the senior running back from Bentworth ran 30 yards around the left end, taking the ball to the Westminster 10-yard line. Two plays later, Kobe DeRosaa scored from a yard out to set the final score. The Presidents (4-1) scored on their first two possessions, driving 70 and 79 yards, each capped by Jacob Pugh scoring passes. Zach Cernuto opened the scoring on his 6-yard reception midway through the first quarter. John Peduzzi made a contested catch for a 33-yard TD with just over a minute to play in the quarter. Westminster’s defense forced a punt that was blocked and returned for a touchdown by Brite Cannon early in the second period, pulling the Titans to within 14-7. The score stayed that way until Pugh was picked off late in the third. Four plays later, Ryan Gomes got to the edge, scoring on a 33-yard sprint, tying the game. Pugh finished the game hitting 26-of-40 for 248 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Jacob Macosko & Cernuto each caught eight passes, Macosko for 119 yards, Cernuto for 40. Wesminster suffered its first loss of the season.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Eli Holstein threw three touchdowns and rushed for another as Pittsburgh beat North Carolina 34-24 Saturday. Holstein completed 25-of-42 passes for a career-best 381 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for a team-high 76 yards and a score to lead the Panthers (5-0, 1-0 ACC). It’s the third consecutive loss for UNC (3-3, 0-2 ACC). Omarion Hampton paced the offense with 106 rushing yards and a score. UNC defensive back Kaleb Cost had an 84-yard pick-six in the first quarter, but the Tar Heels failed to seize momentum as Pitt piled up 520 yards of total offense.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Drew Allar threw for 237 yards with a touchdown and ran for another score to lead No. 7 Penn State to a 27-11 win over UCLA. Tyler Warren caught a touchdown pass in the last minute of the first half and Kaytron Allen ran one in from 1-yard out in the third quarter. Allar opened the scoring with a 1-yard run of his own in the second quarter. Ryan Barker made two field goals and the Penn State defense turned in another dominant second half to cap a four-game home stand. Penn State star running back Nick Singleton suited up, but didn’t play due to an undisclosed ailment.

NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time in 24 years, the New York Mets and New York Yankees have both won a playoff game on the same day. Brandon Nimmo and the Mets pulled off another late comeback, scoring five times in the eighth inning at Philadelphia to beat the rival Phillies 6-2 in the opener of their National League Division Series. About 2 1/2 hours later, the Yankees finished off a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the Bronx behind a clutch hit and an acrobatic catch from slumping left fielder Alex Verdugo in Game 1 of their American League Division Series. All five previous times the Mets and Yankees won postseason games on the same day came in 1999 and 2000.
