NEW YORK (AP) — Vincent Trocheck scored the shootout winner and Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves and the New York Rangers rallied to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. After an overtime in which each team had several good scoring chances, Trocheck beat Penguins goaltender Stuart Skinner with the only goal of the shootout as the Rangers snapped a five-game losing streak. Shesterkin made five saves in overtime. Mika Zibanejad and Taylor Raddysh also scored for the Rangers. Anthony Mantha and defenseman Ryan Shea scored for the Penguins, who had their two-game winning streak stopped.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have dismissed assistant defensive line coach LaTroy Lewis, just hours before he was named as a suspect in a sexual assault case. The dismissal came shortly after the Falcons said Friday they were looking into allegations that recently surfaced on social media. A direct message seeking comment was sent to Lewis on social media. The allegations date to Lewis’ time at the University of Michigan, where he served as a graduate assistant for the 2022 season before being promoted to assistant defensive line coach for the next two seasons.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Connor Clifton and Egor Chinakhov scored 50 seconds apart in the third period and the Pittsburgh Penguins surged past Jack Hughes and the reeling New Jersey Devils 4-1. Tommy Novak, serving as the first-line center while captain Sidney Crosby recovers from a lower-body injury sustained at the Milan Cortina Olympics, picked up his 12th goal of the season for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have won 8 of 10 to move into second place in the Metropolitan Division. Hughes, who clinched the gold medal for Team USA at the Olympics, received a loud ovation on the road, but was held without a point. The Devils have dropped seven of their last eight games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jack Hughes is still riding the emotional wave from his overtime goal that won Olympic gold for the United States. The New Jersey Devils forward received a long and loud roar of approval from fans in Pittsburgh ahead of a road game against the Penguins. Hughes said he thought he might be recognized in some way, but was caught off guard by the length of ovation. The 24-year-old said he’s welcoming the routine of returning to the grind of an NHL season even with the Devils slumping as the stretch run nears.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — U.S. hockey player Brady Tkachuk says a White House TikTok video falsely paints him as insulting Canadians. Tkachuk calls the clip clearly fake. He says the audio and lip movement do not match. The video uses fabricated audio that includes a bleeped slur about Canadians. Tkachuk says he would never use that language. He also denies shouting “close the northern border” during Team USA’s phone call with President Donald Trump after Sunday’s Olympic gold medal win over Canada. The team has returned from Italy and is resuming the NHL season.

Eight members of Cuba’s delegation were denied visas to the United States for the World Baseball Classic, the Cuban Baseball and Softball Federation said. Cuba is set to play against Puerto Rico, Colombia, Panama and Canada in San Juan, Puerto Rico, during pool play of the WBC, which is scheduled from March 5-17. Among the Cubans that were denied visas are FCBS president Juan Reinaldo Pérez Pardo and general secretary Carlos del Pino Muñoz. Pitching coach Pedro Luis Lazo was also denied.

Burgettstown girls got 12 points from Camryn Reddinger off the bench leading the way to a win against Laurel, clinching a berth in the PIAA 2A girls playoffs. The Blue Devils are the 8th Washington/Greene County team to reach the state playoffs. Chartiers-Houston topped Rochester Thursday night, claiming the WPIAL third-place seed into the PIAA bracket.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to begin their playoff push without Sidney Crosby. The team has placed their longtime captain on injured reserve with a lower-body injury he sustained at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. Crosby is expected to miss around four weeks. The 38-year-old Crosby leads the Penguins in points, goals and assists. Pittsburgh begins the post-Olympic break at home against New Jersey. The Penguins are trying to return to the playoffs following a three-year absence.

NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) — National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes lost four strikes to ABS challenges in his first spring training start. Skenes struck out four and walked four over 2 1/3 innings for Pittsburgh on Wednesday against Atlanta. The Braves were 4 for 4 on challenges to get called strikes by Chris Segal. overturned to balls. The 53-pitch outing is expected to be the only one for Skenes before joining the U.S. for the World Baseball Classic. The right-hander threw 27 pitches for strikes, along with four other pitches initially called strikes that Braves hitters challenged through the automated ball-strike system.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Ebuka Okorie scored 34 points, his sixth 30-point game of the season, and Stanford rallied in the second half to defeat Pittsburgh 75-67 on Wednesday. The Cardinal (17-11, 6-9 ACC) shot 50% from the field and overcame a 34-32 halftime deficit behind a 28-point second half from Okorie. He added six rebounds, six assists and three steals while going 9 for 9 from the free-throw line. Benny Gealer added 12 points, and Aidan Cammann finished with 11 as Stanford went a perfect 10-for-10 shooting at the line. Pitt (10-18, 3-12) was led by Cameron Corhen’s 22 points and eight rebounds, while Barry Dunning Jr. added 19 points on four 3-pointers. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Cardinal.
