JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jake Browning threw for 354 yards and a touchdown in his second career start, and the Cincinnati Bengals stunned the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-31 in overtime. Browning also ran for a score as the Bengals won on a Monday night for the first time since 1990 on Evan McPherson’s 48-yard field goal in the extra frame. This one was shocking and potentially costly for the Jaguars, who lost quarterback Trevor Lawrence to a sprained right ankle late in the fourth quarter.

(WPXI) – Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback Kenny Pickett had surgery for an injury he suffered in Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. Pickett got hurt after taking a hit with just over five minutes left in the second quarter while trying to scramble for a touchdown. After the play, he limped into the blue medical tent and later into the locker room, never returning to the game. He did return to the sideline in a boot. In a press conference Monday, head coach Mike Tomlin described Pickett’s injury as a high ankle sprain. He said it was surgically repaired Monday morning in hopes of accelerating the healing process, but had no further information on Pickett’s status other than to say he is out this week. He said he doesn’t think it’s a season-ending injury.

Michigan, Washington, Texas and Alabama are in the College Football Playoff. Florida State is not and is the first unbeaten Power Five conference champion to be excluded from the four-team field in its 10-year history. The Seminoles lost star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending injury two weeks ago. They continued to win but the committee passed them over. Michigan will face Alabama in the Rose Bowl and Washington will play Texas in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. The winners will play for the national championship Jan. 8 in Houston.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Jim Leyland, who led the Florida Marlins to a World Series title in 1997 and won 1,769 regular-season games over 22 seasons as an entertaining and at-times crusty big league manager, was elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame. Now 78, Leyland received 15 of 16 votes by the contemporary era committee for managers, executives and umpires. He becomes the 23rd manager in the hall. Former player and manager Lou Piniella fell one vote short and former player, broadcaster and executive Bill White was two shy. Leyland managed Pittsburgh, Florida, Colorado and Detroit from 1986 to 2013.

ATLANTA (AP) — Alabama is again top dog in the Southeastern Conference — and perhaps headed to the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide ended Georgia’s 29-game winning streak with a 27-24 victory over the No. 1 Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Now the big question: Is Georgia’s bid for a third straight national title over? Iron Bowl hero Jalen Milroe threw a pair of touchdown passes and No. 8 Alabama’s defense dominated much of the way after giving up a score on Georgia’s opening possession. It was a compelling playoff statement for a Bama team that lost to Texas early in the season.

The Indians clinched their first-ever trip to the state finals where they’ll take on Imhotep Charter. Peters Township missed possible touchdown passes on its first three possessions but took a 14-3 lead at the half, thanks to a pair of late touchdowns. Cocalico scored to open the second half, pulling within 14-9. Through the second half, the Indians struggled to get out of their own way, taking penalties, missing blocks & open receivers. Halfway through the fourth, a dropped snap led to a blocked punt but the PT defense kept Cocalico out of the endzone. That defense had to hold again following a fumble recovered by Cocalico inside the Peters 20-yard line with 100 seconds to play. Six plays later, the defense had done its job and the Indians exhaled, then celebrated. PIAA Football brackets
