AP Source; Browns To Sign QB Joe Flacco

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns are signing former Super Bowl MVP quarterback Joe Flacco to their practice squad. That’s according to a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Browns hadn’t announced the imminent move. The person says Flacco will finalize a contract on Monday. Bringing him in bolsters Cleveland’s quarterback depth after Deshaun Watson was lost for the season with a shoulder fracture. Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s started Sunday’s 13-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 38-year-old Flacco led a comeback by the Jets to beat the Browns last season.

Nedelkovic Helps Penguins Shut Out Vegas

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 38 shots in his return from injury and the Pittsburgh Penguins shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0. Nedeljkovic recorded his first shutout of the season and the eighth of his career. It was his first shutout since April 24, 2022, when he was a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Ryan Graves and Noel Acciari both scored their first of the season and first goal with Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin added a late empty-net goal to seal the win. Adin Hill made 30 saves for the Golden Knights.

Ohio State Moves Up To #2 In AP Football Poll

Ohio State passed Michigan and moved up to No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll a week before the Big Ten rivals play another top-five matchup. No. 4 Washington flip-flopped with No. 5 Florida State. Georgia remained No. 1 and received a season-high 61 first-place votes. The Bulldogs have been atop the rankings for 23 straight weeks, the second-best streak in the history of the poll. The top five teams, all unbeaten, had held their places for five straight weeks. All improved to 11-0 on Saturday.

Nolan DiLucia threw three first-half touchdown passes and ran 39 yards for the Indians’ final score as Peters Township topped defending champion Pine-Richland, 43-17, earning its first-ever WPIAL football championship. Mickey Vaccarrello, Ethan Wertman and Carter Shanafelt each had TD grabs in the second quarter. Vinny Sarcone and Preston Blair ran for Peters touchdowns in the third. The Indians defense held Pine-Richland to 151 yards and 9 first downs. Peters Township travels to play Cathedral Prep (Erie) next weekend in the PIAA quarterfinals.

Fort Cherry rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat Bishop Canevin for the second time this season. The Rangers return to the WPIAL championship game for the first time since 2001 when they lost to Rochester in the first-ever WPIAL game at then-Heinz Field.  Matt Sieg rushed for 157 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead Fort Cherry. The sophomore also passed for over 100 yards and now has put up  more than 3,100 yards total offense for the year. His last two scores turned a 21-20 deficit into a 33-21 lead in the game’s final five minutes. Fort Cherry will play #1 South Side at Acrisure Stadium next Friday morning.

Wash High wasn’t as fortunate, falling to Beaver Falls. The Little Prexies got three defensive touchdowns and held the Tigers to just two first downs in the second half but committed five turnovers of their own, setting Beaver Falls up twice inside the WHS five yard line. Isaiah Thomas and Jaden Nemeth had interception return touchdowns while Zxavian Willis recovered a Beaver Falls fumble in the end zone for a score, his second touchdown of the night. Hurricanes Blow Past The Pens

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Seth Jarvis broke a tie with 8:08 remaining with his first goal in six games and then added an empty-net tally as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2. Sebastian Aho and Brent Burns also scored for Carolina, which received two assists apiece from Jaccob Slavin and Teuvo Teravainen. Goalie Antti Raanta recorded 26 saves as the Hurricanes won for the fifth time in six home games this season. Sidney Crosby kept his high production going with two goals, but the Penguins lost their second game in a row following a five-game winning streak.

Presidents Sink Mariners to Close ’23 Season

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Quarterback Jake Pugh threw six touchdown passes, four of them to Jacob Macosko, leading Washington & Jefferson to a 46-21 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the ECAC James Lynah Bowl Saturday afternoon.  The junior signal caller from Thomas Jefferson, named Presidents Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year Thursday night, set a career mark with the six TD passes in one game and 38 for the season. Macosko scored four times on five catches on the afternoon and was name the game’s Most Valuable Player. Owen Petrisek lead the W&J ground game with 11 carries for 100 yards, hitting the century mark for the first time. The Bentworth grad finished his junior year as the team’s leading rusher with 507 yards on just 64 carries, a 7.9 yds/carry average. Bruno Fabrycki intercepted USMMA quarterback Ben Carney twice, giving him seven picks on the season.  The Mariners finish at 7-3 while the Presidents’ win improves their record to 9-2, the second straight nine-win season. W&J is 6-1 all-time in ECAC Bowl games and has won at least eight games in each full season since 2012

NFL Investigating Burrow Season Ending Injury

The NFL is investigating why the Cincinnati Bengals did not list Joe Burrow on their injury report before Thursday night’s game at Baltimore. That’s according to a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the review is not being discussed publicly. Burrow left the game in the second quarter with a wrist injury that will end his season. The Bengals had posted and later deleted a video on social media that showed Burrow getting off a bus with his right hand in what appeared to be a soft cast. Burrow says he was wearing a compression sleeve that was unrelated to the injury.

AP Sources; Browns Work Out Former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Several people familiar with the visit told The Associated Press that former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco worked out for the Cleveland Browns, who are still sorting through their changing quarterback situation. The 38-year-old Flacco could be an option for the Browns, who lost Deshaun Watson for the season earlier this week with a broken bone in his shoulder. Flacco is the only QB who worked out Friday, said the people who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team does not publicly disclose player workouts. A 15-year veteran, Flacco did not sign a contract before leaving. He rallied the New York Jets to an improbable comeback win over the Browns last season.

Fort Cherry and Wash High head to WPIAL Football semifinals Friday night with spots in next week’s title games. Peters Township plays in its third WPIAL Football Final in five years Saturday while Charleroi boys soccer chases a state championship later Saturday afternoon. Fort Cherry & Wash High played in the first two WPIAL championship games at then Heinz Field in 2001. The Rangers are looking to get back to the finals for the first time since that day but will have to beat Bishop Canevin for the second time this season. Wash High beat Beaver Falls for the 2001 championship. The Tigers stand in the way of Washington’s fourth trip to the finals since that November afternoon. Peters Township will make its third championship game appearance in five seasons, the Indians still searching for their first WPIAL title. Peters Township will face Pine-Richland, the defending champion Rams making their 7th title game appearance in 10 years.  We’ll have all three WPIAL football playoff games on-air and online this weekend.

Pitt Tops Boston College

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nate Yarnell threw for 207 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score as Pittsburgh beat Boston College 24-16. Yarnell, a redshirt sophomore making his second career start, completed 11 of 19 passes. His 61-yard scoring strike to Bub Means in the third quarter gave Pitt the lead for good. The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 3-8. Thomas Castellanos passed for 171 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Eagles. Boston College fell to 6-5 after a second straight loss.
