Monday World Series Games Postponed

Covina, CA ousted Palmview, TX, 15-5, and Manchester, NH eliminated Managua, Nicaragua, 11-1, both in five-inning games at the DICK’S Sporting Goods PONY League World Series Monday. Then, Mother Nature put a stop to further play with steady rains and, at times, heavy downpours. Winners’ bracket games Monday evening, featuring both local teams, were postponed to Tuesday. Tournament officials are hopeful of resuming play at approximately with Games 11-14 to be played as 5-inning contests. The Division Finals, Games 15-16, are tentatively set for Tuesday evening as regulation 7-inning games. Click for Bracket. Palmview led 4-0 and 5-4 only to watch Covina erupt for 11 straight runs, eliminating the South Zone Champions.  Nathan Arellano homered in the Covina first inning and finished with two hits, five RBI and three runs scored. Arellano threw three scoreless innings of relief to get the win. Palmview scored four in the first on just one hit. Covina tied the game in the bottom of the frame thanks to a fielder’s choice and Arellano’s home run to deep left. Palmview scored a run in the top of the third to lead, 5-4, before the West Zone champs plated three in the third, four in the fourth and fifth to walk off with the run-rule win. Covina awaits the Youngstown/Edogawa losers in the elimination bracket.

Manchester scored seven run in the first and never looked back, cruising past Managua and ending the Caribbean champions’ stay in the World Series. Seven different Manchester plays drove in runs, Jace Labore and Chase Crowell each had a pair of RBI. After one out in the first, eight straight East Zone players reached safely on three singles, three walks and a pair of hit-batters. Single runs in the third and fourth innings for Manchester set the stage to end the game early. Labore hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth. After one runner was thrown out at home trying to invoke the run rule, Levi Locke singled to center field, plating Owen Hazelbaker with the game’s final marker. Manchester will face the Washington County/Monterrey loser in the elimination bracket.

Pirates Fall To Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor became the first Met to reach 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases since 2008 as New York beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 to win consecutive games for the first time in two weeks. Jonathan Araúz hit a two-run homer while Daniel Vogelbach and Brandon Nimmo added solo homers as the Mets scored in each of the first six innings in a home game for the first time since June 25, 1987, against the Cubs. Pete Alonso added an RBI double as the Mets won consecutive games for the first time since July 27-28 right before they traded veterans Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander along with several others ahead of the trade deadline.

Report; Patriots Sign Running Back Ezekiel Elliot

A person familiar with the terms tells The Associated Press that three-time Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott has signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots worth $4 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t announced the move. The person says the contract can be worth up to $6 million with incentives. Elliott ran for 68 touchdowns and more than 8,000 yards in seven years with the Dallas Cowboys. After being drafted fourth overall out of Ohio State in 2016, he led the NFL in rushing yards in 2016. He was the runner-up for the AP Rookie of the Year award. He also has more than 2,300 receiving yards and 12 TD catches.

Japan rallied from two runs down in the seventh to beat Palmview, Texas, dropping the South Zone champions into the elimination brackets. With one out, Japan strung together two walks, a balk, a fielder’s choice that didn’t produce an out and two run-scoring doubles to take the lead. Palmview used a big fourth inning to go in front, with three hits, a walk and a sacrifice bunt scoring three. Japan advances to Monday’s winners bracket matchup with Youngstown, OH.

Monterrey scored seven times in the first two innings, including Roberto Saucedo’s three-run home run to roll past Manchester, NH. Saucedo homered again, a two-run shot in the sixth, moments after Oscar Villareal delivered a three-run blase.  Manchester had just one hit, a single and that coming when trailing 8-0. Monterrey faces Washington County in Monday night’s 7pm winners bracket game.

Survive and advance was the theme Sunday evening as elimination bracket play began. Covina, CA built a 9-0, then held off a Bay County, MI late rally to win, 9-8. BayCo scored six runs on just one hit in the sixth, then plated a pair in the seventh to pull within a run. The tying run got to third with two outs but was stranded on an infield pop that ended the game. Covina scored five times in the third, sending 10 batters to the plate, then added four more runs over the 5th & 6th frames. The winners face Palmview Monday at 9 am, the start time moved up an hour due to expected weather issues Monday.

Managua, Nicaragua earned its first-ever win at the PONY World Series, taking advantage of five Germany errors to win, 5-3. Tied at one after two innings, Nicaragua used a hit, two errors, a balk and three walks to go in front, 4-1. Germany scored once in the fifth, another in the seventh, but never got the tying run on base. Jayme Warlies homered for Germany. Nicaragua will take on Manchester shortly before noon, trying to stay in the tournament.

Pirates Split Doubleheader With Reds

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Stuart Fairchild drove in the tying run in the eighth inning and the go-ahead run in the 10th, helping the Cincinnati Reds to overcome a two-run deficit and split a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 6-5 victory Sunday night. Jared Triolo hit his first major league home run in the opener, a three-run drive as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning that lifted the Pirates to a 4-2 win. Cincinnati had lost nine of 11 before winning the nightcap. Bryan Reynolds homered twice in the night game, raising his season total to 17. Pirates manager Derek Shelton, bench coach Don Kelly and pitching coach Oscar Marin were ejected by plate umpire Nic Lentz during the same at-bat for arguing ball/strike calls in the sixth inning of a doubleheader nightcap against Cincinnati Reds. Pittsburgh led 4-3 when Luke Maile walked with two outs, loading the bases. After the ejections, TJ Friedl hit an inning-ending flyout off Cody Bolton. Third base coach Mike Rabelo took over as acting manager.

Glover Makes It 2 In A Row By Winning FedEx Cup Opener

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Lucas Glover is on a roll. One week after a clutch win just to get into the FedEx Cup playoffs, Glover beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff at the St. Jude Championship. He was looking at an early end to his season two weeks ago. Now Glover is up to No. 4 in the FedEx Cup and assured a spot in the Tour Championship. He made one clutch putt after another to stay in the game and shot 69. Cantlay shot a 64. But in the playoff, Cantlay’s tee shot found the water. Glover won it with a par.

Washington County Tops Germany; Late Game Suspended

Braydon Radue tossed 3.2 shutout innings and doubled in the sixth, driving in the eventual winning run as Washington County downed Paderborn, Germany, 2-1, at the DICK’S Sporting Goods PONY League World Series. Radue allowed just three hits, all singles before giving way to the bullpen. The Host team opened the scoring in the third. Ryan Huey doubled with two outs and moved to third on an infield single to short. When the ball was thrown away at first, Huey scored to make it 1-0. Huey singled to open the sixth and raced home on a ringing double by Radue, putting Washington County up, 2-0. Paderborn scored its only run in the bottom of the frame on a pair of infield errors. Alex Eslep retired the final four batters of the game to earn the save. Washington County advances to the winners bracket Monday night to face the Monterrey/Manchester winner. Troy Stimpson had two hits for Washington County.

Manchester, NH scored four runs after two out in the sixth to rally past Managua, Nicaragua  in Game 4 of the World Series. The East Zone champions managed just one hit prior to the uprising. With two out and nobody on in the sixth, trailing 1-0 since the first, Levi Locke singled. Nate Duquette eventually walked but during his at-bat, Locke got caught in a rundown must made it back to first safely when nobody covered after the first throw. Brody Labbe’s double to the gap in right put Manchester in front, 2-0. Labbe moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on Chris Centorino’s RBI single. A balk moved Labbe to second and he scored the winner’s fourth run of the inning in an RBI single off the bat of Seth Lecuyer. Patrick Roy got the win in relief of starter Owen Hazelbaker. Roy held Managua to just one hit over two innings of relief. Locke worked a clean seventh to earn the save. The Caribbean champions used a two-base fielding error, a passed ball and a double-play to score their only run. Managua drops to the elimination bracket Sunday evening against Paderborn. Manchester plays Monterrey, Mexico early Sunday afternoon, the final preliminary game.

The final game of the day, Edogawa, Japan vs. Palmview, Texas, was suspended in the fourth with Palmview leading 3-1. Edogawa wasted a couple early chances to score but got on the board with a fourth-inning, two-out double by Kaisei Fukuchi, scoring Natsuke Nakamura. Palmview sent just the minimum number of batters to the plate through three innings off Edogawa starter Yugo Inoue. The Asia-Pacific squad made a change to start the fourth, leading 1-0, and Palmview strung together three singles, a walk and a sacrifice bunt to score three times, each run coming after a 35-minute lightning delay. Play lasted only another 10 minutes when more lightning was detected and the game was suspended. Action will resume at 12 noon on Sunday, followed the three games on the original docket.

Pirates, Reds Rained Out Saturday

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds’ game in Pittsburgh against the Pirates on Saturday night was rained out and will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Sunday. The opener is scheduled for 1:35 p.m., when LHP Brandon Williamson (4-2, 4.54 ERA) will take the mound for the Reds against Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller (9-8, 4.39). Keller is 0-4, allowing 27 runs in 26 2/3 innings across five starts, since pitching in the All-Star Game on July 11. The nightcap is set for 6:05 p.m. Luke Weaver (2-4, 6.75) will start for the Reds against Pittsburgh’s RHP Andre Jackson (0-0, 5.16).

Palmview, Youngstown Win PONY Series Openers

Palmview, TX used a six-run sixth inning to bust open a close game, beating Bay County, MI, 9-1, opening night at the DICK’S Sporting Goods PONY League World Series. Bay County took a 1-0 lead on LJ Hartman’s solo home run in the first, the 1,400th home run in the 71-year history of the tournament.  Palmview tied the game in the third on Alexis Lopez’ sacrifice fly and took the lead later in the inning on an RBI double off the bat of Javier Garza. Lopez and Garza would add RBI later in the game with Rolando Solis driving in a pair. Palmview will take on Edogawa, Japan Saturday afternoon. Bay County drops into the elimination bracket on Sunday.

Youngstown, OH took advantage of eight walks, a pair of hit batters and a couple clutch hits to build a 7-0 lead, then held off a late rally, beating Covina, CA, 8-6. Jayden struck out a dozen batters, eight in a row at one point, and drove in four runs to get the win. Amos singled in a pair in the third, then doubled in two more runs an inning later. Covina scored twice off the starter in the fifth, then two more off Layne Rider in the frame. The Californians plated a pair of runs in the seventh, one on Omar Arretche’s solo home run but couldn’t pull even. Youngstown is off until Monday night’s winners bracket. Covina takes on Bay County in the tournament’s first elimination game.

Pirates Fall to Cincinnati on Friday Night

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Elly Da La Cruz hit a two-run triple in the first inning and drove in three runs, and Luke Maile belted a three-run homer as the Cincinnati Reds routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2 for just their second victory in nine games. De La Cruz’s triple into the right-field corner sparked a three-run first. The rookie shortstop then scored on a double by Spencer Steer. Reds manager David Bell shuffled his slumping team’s lineup and dropped De La Cruz from leadoff to the No. 3 spot. The 21-year-old had hit just .207 in 22 games at the top of the order. Maile’s homer in the fourth off Jose Oviedo extended the lead to 6-0. Cincinnati rookie Andrew Abbott took a shutout into the sixth.
