The WPIAL Basketball quarterfinals opened Wednesday night. Defending WPIAL 5A girls champion Peters Township continued its run with a 43-36 win over Baldwin, a team that beat the Indians twice in Section 4 play. Taylor McCullough led all scorers with 14 points for the winners who will face defending PIAA champion South Fayette. The Lions survived Trinity’s upset bid, outscoring the Hillers, 9-6, over the final 3:30 of the game. Avella boys season ended as the Eagles couldn’t rally from a 15-point first half deficit at home against Serra Catholic. Waynesburg’s girls lost to Beaver Falls and will now have to win an elimination game Friday to extend its season. MILAN (AP) — Sidney Crosby left Canada’s Olympic quarterfinal game against Czechia in the second period because of injury, did not return and his status for the rest of the tournament is uncertain. Crosby’s right leg appeared to buckle when bracing for contact on a big hit from Czechia defenseman Radko Gudas a few minutes into the second. Laboring as he stayed on the ice, Crosby got crunched into the boards by Gudas and Martin Necas and then left after shaking his right leg and wincing. Crosby spoke to players at the second intermission, and Canada rallied to tie it and win in overtime.

MILAN (AP) — The U.S. and Canada are moving on to the semifinals at the Olympics. Each needed extra hockey to get through the quarterfinals. Quinn Hughes scored in overtime to put the U.S. past Sweden 2-1 after giving up the tying goal to Mika Zibanejad with 91 seconds left in the third period. Dylan Larkin deflected Jack Hughes’ shot in for the only U.S. goal in regulation. Nick Suzuki tied it for Canada late in regulation against Czechia, and Mitch Marner won it 4-3 in overtime to avoid what would have been a stunning early exit.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are going up for sale in accordance with the wishes of late team owner Paul Allen. Allen’s estate announced Wednesday that it has begun the process of selling the team, which is coming off its second Super Bowl victory in franchise history. The Seahawks have been in the Allen family since 1997, when Paul bought the team for $194 million from then-owner Ken Behring. Paul was critical in keeping the Seahawks in Seattle, which is where the team is expected to remain after the sale is finalized. The Seahawks have a lease at Lumen Field that runs through 2032 with three 10-year options.

After 20 years as an athletic director, the last 15 at Peters Township, Brian Geyer has agreed to become associate executive director at the WPIAL. Geyer has been president of the WPIAL Board of Directors and a member of the PIAA Board. He will leave those positions effective at the end of February. Under Geyer’s leadership, Peters Township has won a PIAA girls basketball championship, multiple WPIAL titles and has hosted numerous championship and playoff events at the newly-constructed AHN Arena. The League’s associate position has been vacant since mid-December when Vince Sortino succeeded Scott Seltzer as Executive Director. Justin Pyles, assistant athletic director at Peters Township, will oversee the day-to-day operations when Geyer departs at the end of the month. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tony Clark has resigned as head of the Major League Baseball Players Association, the union announced said, as a possible salary cap fight looms during a federal investigation of its finances. Clark was asked to resign by the eight-man executive subcommittee of the players’ association after an investigation by the union’s outside counsel discovered evidence that Clark had an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law, a union employee since 2023, a person familiar with the union’s deliberations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that was not announced.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The immediate future of Tiger Woods is in the boardroom instead of the golf course. Woods still won’t rule out returning to the Masters. All he says is that playing the first major of the year isn’t off the table. But he is coming off a year in which he didn’t compete in a single tournament for the first time in his career. He had disk replacement surgery in October. Most of his time is occupied in the PGA Tour boardroom as head of the committee reshaping the schedule. Also on hold is being Ryder Cup captain.
