Two-Time AL Cy Young Winner Skubal To Have Elbow Surgery

May 5, 2026 4:29 am

DETROIT (AP) — Two-time American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal will have surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow after being scratched from Monday’s start against the Boston Red Sox. Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters that the left-hander felt pain in his elbow on Sunday, less than a week after an injury scare against the Atlanta Braves. The 29-year-old — set to become a free agent next offseason — underwent tests that showed the loose bodies. The surgery hadn’t yet been scheduled. There is no immediate timetable for his return.

Judge Wants To Keep Sterling’s Voice Alive

May 5, 2026 4:32 am

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge hopes John Sterling’s iconic call, “Ballgame over! Yankees win! Theee Yankees win!” becomes a new tradition at Yankee Stadium. Judge shared this after the Yankees defeated Baltimore 12-1, completing a four-game sweep on the day of Sterling’s death at age 87. Sterling, who called games from 1989 to 2024, was honored with a pregame tribute — and then his familiar call that punctuated Yankees wins was played over the ballpark’s public-address system following the final out. Judge hit his 14th homer in the first inning and added a two-run single in the eighth. Yankees manager Aaron Boone also supports the idea of Sterling’s call becoming part of the victory routine.

Cameron Young Finishes Off Wire-to-wire Win At Cadillac Championship

May 4, 2026 4:11 am

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — The only person who gave Cameron Young any trouble on Sunday was Cameron Young. He called a one-stroke penalty on himself while playing the par 4 second hole, after he caused his ball to move in the fairway. And then he made par anyway. It was that sort of week: Young was unflappable and unbeatable. He went wire-to-wire alone on the lead at the Cadillac Championship, a final round of 4-under 68 getting him to 19 under for the week and six shots clear of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. President Donald Trump was watching. Scheffler finished second at 13 under.

Pirates Walk Past Reds Saturday

May 3, 2026 7:12 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Carmen Mlodzinski had a career-high 10 strikeouts, Pittsburgh tied the MLB record for consecutive walks in an inning, and the Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 17-7 on Saturday. The Pirates drew seven consecutive walks in their five-run second inning, tying the mark set by the Chicago White Sox (Aug. 28, 1909) and Atlanta Braves (May 25, 1983). Pittsburgh’s first four runs in the inning came without putting a ball in play before Henry Davis grounded into an RBI force out to cap the inning and make it 10-3. The Pirates set season highs for runs (17) and hits (19), and each of Pittsburgh’s starters in the lineup had at least one RBI. Mlodzinski (2-2) gave up five runs, eight hits and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. Ryan O’Hearn, Marcell Ozuna and Konnor Griffin each had an RBI double in the first inning and the Pirates led 5-2 going into the second. O’Hearn and Ozuna had three RBIs apiece and Griffin was 4 for 5 with a triple, a double and two RBIs. Spencer Horwitz and Nick Gonzales each drove in two runs. Brandon Lowe walked four times, the most by a Pirates player this season, and scored three runs. Cincinnati starter Rhett Lowder (3-2) allowed eight runs and five hits in 1 1/3 innings. Will Benson and JJ Bleday each hit a home run for the Reds. Nathaniel Lowe went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. The Pirates beat the Reds 9-3 in the series opener Friday to snap a five-game losing streak. Cincinnati’s Chase Burns (3-1, 2.65 ERA) is set to pitch Sunday opposite Braxton Ashcraft (1-2, 3.71) to conclude a three-game series.

Golden Tempo Makes History For First Woman To Train A Derby Winning Horse

May 3, 2026 7:33 am

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Golden Tempo has won the Kentucky Derby at odds of 23-1 to make Cherie DeVaux the first woman to train the winner of the opening leg of the Triple Crown. DeVaux is just the second female trainer to win any Triple Crown race after Jena Antonucci won with Arcangelo in the 2023 Belmont Stakes. Jockey Jose Ortiz won the Derby for the first time in his 11th try. Renegade was second, with brother Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, and long shot Ocelli was third. DeVaux during the week shifted from downplaying what it would mean to be the first woman to train a Derby winner to understanding she’s a role model to girls who might want to follow in her footsteps someday.

Cameron Young Still In Control Of The Cadillac Championship

May 3, 2026 7:37 am

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Cameron Young didn’t have as easy of a time in the third round of the Cadillac Championship as he did while building a big lead Thursday and Friday. It didn’t seem to matter, either. Young is still in full control at Trump National Doral, after his round of 2-under 70 on Saturday got him to 15 under for the week. He took a six-shot lead over a group that includes top-ranked Scottie Scheffler into a potentially rainy final round Sunday.

Padres Agree To Sell Team To Investor Group

May 3, 2026 7:35 am

(AP) – The San Diego Padres have reached an agreement to sell control of the team to an investor group led by Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano. The family of late owner Peter Seidler formally announced the deal Saturday. The sale must still be approved by Major League Baseball. The deal with private equity billionaire Feliciano and his wife took shape last month at an MLB-record valuation of $3.9 billion. The Padres’ announcement of the deal didn’t give specifics on the members of the investor group or the purchase price. Seidler’s family began to explore a sale of the Padres last November, two years after the death of the popular Peter Seidler, who became the Padres’ primary owner in 2020.
