Padres Agree To Sell Team To Investor Group

May 3, 2026 7:35 am

(AP) – The San Diego Padres have reached an agreement to sell control of the team to an investor group led by Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano. The family of late owner Peter Seidler formally announced the deal Saturday. The sale must still be approved by Major League Baseball. The deal with private equity billionaire Feliciano and his wife took shape last month at an MLB-record valuation of $3.9 billion. The Padres’ announcement of the deal didn’t give specifics on the members of the investor group or the purchase price. Seidler’s family began to explore a sale of the Padres last November, two years after the death of the popular Peter Seidler, who became the Padres’ primary owner in 2020.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Henry Davis hit his first two home runs of the season, Mitch Keller pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 9-1 to end a five-game losing streak. Davis homered in consecutive innings. He hit a solo shot to center field in the fourth that pushed the Pirates’ lead to 4-0 and connected on a two-run drive to left field that capped a four-run fifth and made it 8-0. Keller (3-1) allowed one run, struck out six and walked one. The NL Central-leading Reds lost for the fifth time in 16 games.

Malkin Wants To Play One More Season

May 2, 2026 4:35 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins head into an offseason with plenty of questions, starting with the future of forward Evgeni Malkin. The 20-year veteran is scheduled to become a free agent in July and wants to stay in Pittsburgh after the Penguins returned to the playoffs following a three-year absence. General manager Kyle Dubas has been noncommittal while discussing Malkin’s status. Malkin, who turns 40 in August, says he understands if Dubas wants to surround captain Sidney Crosby with plenty of talent. Malkin had 61 points this season but also missed 20 games due to injury and another five thanks to a suspension.

DK Metcalf Won’t Face Charges For Altercation

May 2, 2026 4:34 am

DETROIT (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will not face charges after an incident with a Detroit Lions fan last December. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced that it will not pursue a criminal complaint following an investigation. CBS TV cameras captured Metcalf and Ryan Kennedy, a Lions fan, having an exchange during Pittsburgh’s 29-24 victory on Dec. 21. The NFL suspended Metcalf for the final two games of the regular season. Officials reviewed videotape and interviewed witnesses before denying the warrant request. A defamation lawsuit filed by Kennedy against Metcalf is still pending.

No Clear Favorite At 152nd Kentucky Derby

May 2, 2026 4:38 am

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — There is no clear favorite in the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby that has at least a half-dozen legitimate contenders and maybe more horses that can win it. Todd Pletcher-trained Renegade opened as the 4-1 morning line favorite but horses like Brad Cox’s Commander or Further Ado or Bill Mott’s Chief Wallabee could be in the mix. It does not yet look like there’s a super horse in this 3-year-old class who could sweep the Triple Crown.

Cardinals Complete 4 Game Sweep Of Pirates

May 1, 2026 4:44 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — JJ Wetherholt led off with a home run against Pirates ace Paul Skenes, and the St. Louis beat Pittsburgh 10-5 to complete a four-game sweep. Skenes fell to 0-5 against the Cardinals after allowing five runs, four earned in five innings. The reigning NL Cy Young winner’s brilliant April ends with a rare dud as Pittsburgh’s losing streak hit five. Alec Burleson had three hits and drove in three runs for the Cardinals, who took a four-game series from Pittsburgh for the first time since 2019. Bryan Reynolds had two hits and drove in three runs for the Pirates.

LIV Golf Has New Chairman, Seeks New Funding Without Saudi Backing

May 1, 2026 4:42 am

LIV Golf has a new chairman and a new strategy to move forward after Saudi Arabian funding ends after this year. That Saudi funding is what allowed the rival league to launch four years ago by offering nine-figure contracts to top stars and $30 million prize funds. Yasir Al-Rumayyan is no longer chairman of LIV Golf. He’s the Public Investment Fund governor who was behind the creation of LIV Golf. The league is turning to Gene Davis and Jon Zinman to lead the new direction. The development comes during a week when LIV Golf postponed next month’s even in New Orleans.

Pirates Fall To Cardinals; Losing Skid At 4

April 29, 2026 4:29 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Nathan Church ended the game by robbing Nick Gonzales of what would have been a walk-off, two-run homer by making a leaping catch at the left-field wall, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ryan O’Hearn singled with one out in the ninth off Riley O’Brien and Marcell Ozuna struck out on three straight pitches. Gonzales drove a first-pitch slider to left, and Church jumped and caught the ball above the top of the 6-foot wall, ,373 feet from home plate.
