Vegas Snaps Skid With Win Over Penguins

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Pavel Dorofeyev had two goals and an assist and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-2 on Thursday night. Vegas, which had lost six of seven, snapped a three-game losing streak that dropped them to third place in the Pacific Division. With Edmonton losing 7-2 in Dallas earlier in the night, the Golden Knights moved into sole possession of second place. The Penguins remained tied with the New York Islanders in the Metropolitan Division. Clinging to a 3-2 lead after the first two periods, the Golden Knights scored twice on their first four shots of the third on goals from Dorofeyev and Jack Eichel to pull away. Dorofeyev has a career-high 54 points, two more than last season.

Vikings Sign QB Kyler Murray

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have signed Kyler Murray. They focused their latest quarterback search on the first overall pick from the 2019 NFL draft who was just released by the Arizona Cardinals. Murray visited Vikings headquarters before agreeing to join them just one day after being cut by the Cardinals. Arizona owes him $36.8 million in guaranteed salary this season. The Vikings have been seeking a challenger or replacement for J.J. McCarthy. Murray has an AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, two Pro Bowl selections and a 67% career completion percentage.

Straka Part Of 4-Way Tie At The Players Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Sepp Straka kept getting into trouble and saving pars. And then he chipped in for eagle late in his round at The Players Championship for a 67 and a share of the lead when he left the TPC Sawgrass. Austin Smotherman has a 15-foot birdie putt in the morning to take the lead. It was too dark to continue. Rory McIlroy’s back wasn’t a problem as he made it to the first tee. Collin Morikawa experienced back pain on his second hole and had to withdraw. There was plenty of drama, but only an even-par 72 for Scottie Scheffler.

Bri Morreale pumped in 18 points, one of four Peters Township players in double figures, as the Indians advanced to the 5A girls quarterfinals with a win over Manheim Central. Maddyn Mehl, Jordyn Welsh & Taylor McCullough combined for 31 points in Peters Township’s 20th all-time PIAA playoff win. Trinity struggled from the floor all night long, managing just seven field goals in a season-ending loss to York Suburban. Vitt Emerich hit four three-pointers for Trinity, including one with just over 20 seconds to play but the Hillers couldn’t get another good look. Canon-McMillan struggled from the floor but hit 26-of-33 at the foul line to eliminate City League champion Allderdice. The Big Macs advance to their first-ever PIAA quarterfinals and will take on District 3 runner-up Dallastown Friday night. Chartiers-Houston’s season ended against Bishop McCort as the Crushers rode a 12-0 first half run to reach the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive year.

Pitt Falls To N.C. State At ACC Tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Quadir Copeland had 24 points and eight assists, Ven-Allen Lubin added 18 points and No. 7 seed N.C. State beat 15th-seeded Pittsburgh 98-88 in the second round of the ACC Tournament. N.C. State advances to play No. 2 seed and 10th-ranked Virginia in the quarterfinals on Thursday. N.C. State began the second half on a 12-2 run to extend its lead to 63-52 before Pitt made its first field goal at the 16:31 mark. Matt Able made the Wolfpack’s 11th 3-pointer — in just 15 attempts — for a 76-62 lead. The officials upgraded to a flagrant-1 foul with 2:13 remaining after Lubin was pushed from behind on an alley-oop attempt. Lubin made both free throws and Paul McNeil Jr. made it a four-point possession.

US Heads To WBC Quarterfinals Thanks To Italy

HOUSTON (AP) — A day later than expected, the United States has punched its ticket to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic. The Americans got the help they needed from Italy, which beat Mexico 9-1 on Wednesday night. Italy beat the U.S. 8-6 a night earlier, turning the Americans into spectators as they hoped to avoid elimination. The Italians won Group B with a 4-0 record. The U.S. was runner-up in the group at 3-1. Mexico was eliminated, having also lost to the U.S. The Americans will stay in Houston to meet Canada on Friday night. Italy will play Puerto Rico in the other quarterfinal at Daikin Park on Saturday.

Cam Heyward Agrees To Contract Extension With Steelers

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward agreed to a one-year contract extension with the club as the team transitions to new head coach Mike McCarthy. The 36-year-old Heyward, a seven-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro and the 2023 Walter Payton Award winner as the NFL’s Man of the Year, is coming off a solid 2025 in which he finished with 78 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. He had one season left on the contract extension he signed in 2024. A second team All-Pro last season, Heyward’s 92 sacks rank second on Pittsburgh’s career list behind teammate T.J. Watt.

Penguins Rally Late But Fall In Shootout

(AP) — Jackson Blake converted on the decisive shootout goal and the Carolina Hurricanes recovered after relinquishing a two-goal lead late in regulation to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Tuesday night. Mark Jankowski and Seth Jarvis scored 59 seconds apart in Carolina’s three-goal third period and Logan Stankoven and Alexander Nikishin also scored for the Hurricanes, who extended their home-ice points streak to 12 games. Frederik Andersen made 24 saves in the matchup between the top two teams in the Metropolitan Division. Bryan Rust scored two goals and Anthony Mantha and Noel Acciari had the other goals for the Penguins, who began a five-game road trip that also will end in Raleigh.

Italy Stuns The US At World Baseball Classic

Kyle Teel, Sam Antonacci and Jac Caglianone homered as Italy built a big lead and held on to stun the United States 8-6 in the World Baseball Classic. The U.S. is done with pool play at Houston’s Daikin Park and needs the Italians to beat Mexico Wednesday night to be guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals. If Mexico beats Italy, all three teams will be knotted at 3-1 and the winners will be determined by a tiebreaker, with the team that allowed the most runs eliminated. Pete Crow-Armstrong homered twice for the Americans, but Aaron Judge struck out with a runner on to end it.

Ravens Nix Trade For Raiders’ Maxx Crosby

The blockbuster trade sending star pash rusher Maxx Crosby to the Baltimore Ravens is off. And the fallout from that reversal could have a ripple effect throughout the NFL on the eve of the new league year. The Las Vegas Raiders said Tuesday night that Baltimore backed out of the trade that was supposed to send Crosby to the Ravens for two first-round draft picks. The deal was agreed to last Friday but couldn’t be finalized until Wednesday. A person with knowledge of Baltimore’s decision told The Associated Press that Crosby failed his physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because those results are private.
