Keegan Bradley Wins Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, Conn (AP) — Keegan Bradley built a big enough lead in front of adoring New England fans that he broke the tournament record at the Travelers Championship despite a shaky closing stretch. Bradley closed with a 2-under 68 for a three-shot victory. He finished at 23-under 257 at TPC River Highlands, a shot better than Kenny Perry’s previous record from 2009. The 37-year-old Vermont native won on the PGA Tour for the sixth time. Zac Blair closed with a 62 and finished in a tie for second with Brian Harman, who shot 64. It was Blair’s best finish on the PGA Tour.

Pirates Fall To Marlins In Extra Innings

MIAMI (AP) — Jon Berti drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th inning, and the Miami Marlins beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. Automatic runner Joey Wendle advanced to third on Nick Fortes’ sacrifice bunt before Berti hit a line drive to right against Angel Perdomo (1-1). Yuli Gurriel’s sacrifice fly off Pirates closer David Bednar in the bottom of the 10th tied it at 3-all after Ke’Bryan Hayes put the Pirates ahead in the top half with an RBI single. Luis Arraez homered and walked twice, Jacob Stallings had three hits and Andrew Nardi (5-1) struck out the side in a perfect 11th for the Marlins, who played before their second-largest home crowd of the season at 24,668. Arraez went 1 for 3 and his major league-leading average slipped a point to .401.

Reds 12-Game Winning Streak Snapped

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds’ longest winning streak in 66 years was stopped at 12 games when Raisel Iglesias struck out Jonathan India for the final out as the Atlanta Braves prevailed 7-6 in an eight-homer slugfest. Each team homered four times. Matt Olson hit the 200th of his big league career and Travis d’Arnaud and Ozzie Albies also went deep off Graham Ashcraft. Marcell Ozuna homered against Alex Young. Cincinnati’s Matt McLain and Spencer Steer hit two-run homers, and Jake Fraley and Will Benson hit ninth-inning drives off Iglesias.

WVU Names Interim Basketball Coach

Assistant Josh Eilert has been selected as the interim coach at West Virginia, punctuating a hectic week after Hall of Famer Bob Huggins resigned following a drunken driving arrest. Athletic director Wren Baker announced the move Saturday night. The 43-year-old Eilert first joined Huggins as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 2006, then followed him to West Virginia in 2007. Eilert has had a variety of roles with the Mountaineers. Under NCAA rules, West Virginia’s players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal, and several apparently have chosen to do so, although they have the option to return.

Pirates Halt Losing Streak

MIAMI (AP) — Carlos Santana broke a ninth-inning tie with an RBI single and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a 10-game losing streak, rallying to beat the Miami Marlins 3-1 on Friday night. Down 1-0 after eight innings, the Pirates scored three runs against relievers A.J. Puk (3-2) and Dylan Floro. Santana chased Puk with a line drive to center, and scored on Tucupita Marcano’s single. Pittsburgh starter Luis Ortiz settled down after allowing a run in the first and shut out Miami the next seven frames. Ortiz (2-3) gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out five. David Bednar closed with a perfect ninth for his 15th save. Miami’s Luis Arraez had three hits to raise his major league-leading batting average to .402.

Pirates Call Up More Minor League Help

MIAMI (AP) — The skidding Pittsburgh Pirates have called up another first-round draft pick, selecting touted infielder Nick Gonzales from Triple-A Indianapolis. Gonzales made his major league debut Friday night, starting at second base and batting seventh against the Miami Marlins. He went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts in a 3-1 victory that snapped Pittsburgh’s 10-game losing streak. Gonzales became the second player chosen in the first round by Pirates general manager Ben Cherington to get called up this week. Henry Davis, the top overall pick in 2021, was promoted Monday from Indianapolis and hit his first big league homer in Thursday’s 6-4 loss at Miami. The 24-year-old Gonzales was Pittsburgh’s top pick and seventh overall in 2020 out of New Mexico State.

Commanders Sale Topic Of NFL Owners Meeting

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that NFL owners are set to meet July 20 to consider and potentially vote to approve the sale of the Washington Commanders. Three-quarters of the league’s 32 owners are needed to finalize the deal between Dan Snyder and his family and a group led by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris. Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson is also among those involved in the incoming ownership group. The deal is for a North American professional sports record $6.05 billion.

MIAMI (AP) — Garrett Cooper doubled, singled and hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Miami Marlins beat Pittsburgh 6-4 Thursday night and extended the Pirates’ losing streak to 10 games. Luis Arraez went 1 for 3, and his major league-leading batting average slipped a point to .397. Marlins starter Braxton Garrett struck out a career-high 13 over seven innings and allowed three hits and two runs, one earned, but didn’t figure in the decision. Huascar Brazoban (2-1) got the win and A.J. Puk earned his 10th save. Henry Davis hit his first career homer and Ke’Bryan Hayes added a solo shot for Pittsburgh

Pirates Brian Reynolds On Ten-Day Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates today placed outfielder Bryan Reynolds on the 10-day injured list (retro to June 20) with low back inflammation.  Right-handed pitcher Cody Bolton has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.  In addition, first baseman/designated hitter Ji Man Choi (left Achilles tendon strain) will begin a rehab assignment Thursday night with Double-A Altoona.

Victor Wembanyama Is Top Pick In The NBA Draft

NEW YORK (AP) — Victor Wembanyama is the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, headed to San Antonio with enormous expectations to become basketball’s newest sensation. The selection of the 19-year-old from France that had been a foregone conclusion for months was announced by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Thursday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Wembanyama arrives with far more height and hype than most No. 1 picks. Listed at 7-foot-4, he dominated his French league in his final season there, leading all players in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. Brandon Miller of Alabama was the No. 2 pick by the Charlotte Hornets and Scoot Henderson went third to the Portland Trail Blazers.
