LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wyndham Clark has won the U.S. Open for his first major championship, beating Rory McIlroy by one shot at Los Angeles Country Club. The 29-year-old from Denver was playing in just his seventh major and had never finished better than 75th. His even-par 70 was good enough to outlast four-time major champion McIlroy, who also shot 70. Clark finished at 10-under 270. He tapped in for the victory, pumped his fists, hugged his caddie and then covered his face with his cap. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler also shot 70 and finished third, three shots back.

Seven WPIAL teams went to Penn State over the weekend, looking for PIAA gold. Thursday wins by Shaler and Riverside baseball teams gave District 7 hopes of hitting the motherload. Unfortunately, the rest of the pans revealed only silver. Softball squads went 0-4 including one-run losses by Montour, Union and Shaler, the latter in nine innings.
Saturday afternoon, Mt. Lebanon’s drive for a second baseball championship ended in a loss to District 12 champion Father Judge. Mt. Lebanon took a 1-0 lead in the third on Matt Delvaux’s RBI single to left. Father Judge’s starter, David Rodriguez then slammed the door, retiring the next 10 batters. Meanwhile, the Crusaders scored twice in the fifth off the Blue Devils’ starter, David Shields, the first post-season runs against the sophomore left-hander who left the game one out into the seventh. Father Judge plated a pair of insurance runs off reliever Tyler Smith. The Blue Devils loaded the bases with two out in the seventh, but couldn’t tie the game, forced to settle for second place 25 years after winning their only state baseball championship.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark share the lead after three rounds of the U.S. Open. Clark was the one who had reason to be elated. Fowler made a 70-foot birdie putt and was in the lead for much of Saturday at Los Angeles Country Club. But then he missed a 3 1/2-foot par putt on the last hole. Clark hit a bold approach and made birdie. They were a shot ahead of Rory McIlroy, who played a relatively boring round that seems to work just fine in the U.S. Open. Scottie Scheffler had an eagle-birdie finish and was two strokes back.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joey Wiemer homered and Blake Perkins drove in two runs as the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 5-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates to stop a six-game losing streak and take over first place in the NL Central. Brewers manager Craig Counsell tried to have the game end on a pitch clock violation with the bases loaded when Jason Delay stepped out with an 0-2 count and about 5 seconds left on the timer. Counsell came onto the field, arms raised wide, and plate umpire Ramon DeJesus told the manager that he had ordered the clock reset. Milwaukee (35-34) moved a half-game ahead of the Reds (35-35) and Pirates (34-34). Pittsburgh has lost four straight and is 14-26 following a 20-8 start. Pittsburgh starter Rich Hill (6-6) allowed four runs — three earned — and three hits in five innings with six walks, one shy of his career high. The 43-year-old left-hander struggled through a 36-pitch first inning, walking three of his first four batters and committing a pitch clock violation. A catcher’s interference call on Austin Hedges put Luis Urías on first and loaded the bases. Hill forced in a run with a walk on a full-count curveball to Brian Anderson, and Perkins hit a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. (Photo: AP)

CHICAGO (AP) — Marcus Stroman threw six effective innings for his sixth straight victory and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 on Thursday night for a three-game sweep. Ian Happ had a triple, double and single and drove in two runs, and Christopher Morel went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Cody Bellinger laced an RBI double in Chicago’s five-run fifth inning after missing a month because of a bruised left knee. Nico Hoerner had two hits. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rickie Fowler is the first player in U.S. Open history with a 62. He held that record for all of 15 minutes until Xander Schauffele joined him. It was an extraordinary morning for the so-called toughest test in golf. Fowler had 10 birdies and finished his round with a two-putt par from just inside 60 feet. Schauffele was two groups behind him and played bogey-free. They settled for their place in the record book. Dustin Johnson and Wyndham Clark played in the afternoon and each shot 64 to get within two shots of the record-breaking duo. Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman finished three shots off the lead.

The Cubs had 13 hits — 12 singles — to reach double-digits in hits and runs again. Mike Tauchman had three hits, two RBIs and made a running catch against the ivy on Carlos Santana’s sac fly in the seventh. Santana lofted a two-run homer and finished with four RBIs.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brooks Koepka says he enjoys chaos. He’s come to the right place at this U.S. Open. Players have been trying to digest the news of the PGA Tour’s shock partnership with LIV Golf’s Saudi Arabian backers. And then PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan had to turn off day-to-day control to two executives because of what’s described as a medical situation. Still to be determined is what kind of chaos Los Angeles Country Club delivers. The U.S. Open starts Thursday on a course smack dab in the middle of LA on a course that looks big and plays small.
