Pirates Get Swept In Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Marcus Stroman threw six effective innings for his sixth straight victory and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 on Thursday night for a three-game sweep. Stroman (8-4) allowed four hits and struck out five while walking two in his MLB-leading 13th quality start. Ian Happ had a triple, double and single and drove in two runs, and Christopher Morel went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Cody Bellinger laced an RBI double in Chicago’s five-run fifth inning after missing a month because of a bruised left knee. Nico Hoerner had two hits. The Cubs outscored the Pirates 28-11 in the series. Pittsburgh, still in first place in the NL Central at 34-33, has dropped four of five.

Fowler, Schauffele Break U.S Open Record At Los Angeles Country Club

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rickie Fowler is the first player in U.S. Open history with a 62. He held that record for all of 15 minutes until Xander Schauffele joined him. It was an extraordinary morning for the so-called toughest test in golf. Fowler had 10 birdies and finished his round with a two-putt par from just inside 60 feet. Schauffele was two groups behind him and played bogey-free. They settled for their place in the record book. Dustin Johnson and Wyndham Clark played in the afternoon and each shot 64 to get within two shots of the record-breaking duo. Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman finished three shots off the lead.

Cubs Score 6 In 6th To Rally & Beat Pirates

CHICAGO (AP) — Dansby Swanson started Chicago’s six-run sixth inning with a hit, then capped the rally with an RBI single as the Cubs overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-6 on Wednesday night. Swanson finished with three hits and two RBIs to help Chicago knock off Pittsburgh, which entered in first in the NL Central, for the second straight night. The Cubs had 13 hits — 12 singles — to reach double-digits in hits and runs again. Mike Tauchman had three hits, two RBIs and made a running catch against the ivy on Carlos Santana’s sac fly in the seventh. Santana lofted a two-run homer and finished with four RBIs.

Chaos Rules The Day As U.S Open Comes To Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brooks Koepka says he enjoys chaos. He’s come to the right place at this U.S. Open. Players have been trying to digest the news of the PGA Tour’s shock partnership with LIV Golf’s Saudi Arabian backers. And then PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan had to turn off day-to-day control to two executives because of what’s described as a medical situation. Still to be determined is what kind of chaos Los Angeles Country Club delivers. The U.S. Open starts Thursday on a course smack dab in the middle of LA on a course that looks big and plays small.

Penguins Name New Assistant General Manager

(WPXI) – The Pittsburgh Penguins have named Jason Spezza as assistant general manager.  Spezza will report directly to President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas and assist club management in all hockey operations departments.  “After a decorated playing career, Jason fully immersed himself on the management side of the game learning all facets of hockey operations this past season while with Toronto,” said Dubas in a news release. “He showed tremendous work ethic, curiosity, and ability to build relationships throughout all departments at the team facility. His move from the roster to the front office staff also helped make the hockey operations department, coaching staff and playing roster a more cohesive and collaborative unit. We are thrilled to have Jason join the Pittsburgh Penguins today as he will add a great perspective to our Club, and we are excited to watch him reach his potential in management.”

Mt. Lebanon to Baseball State Finals

Matthew Delvaux allowed two runs and four hits over six innings and five different batters drove in at least one run leading the Mt. Lebanon baseball to a semifinal win over District 3 champion Cedar Cliff, the Blue Devils’ 6th straight win and 13th in the last 14 games. Mt. Lebanon took an early 2-0 lead, pushed it to 7-0, and cruised to earn a spot in its second PIAA championship game, the first since winning the 1998 title. Click for State Softball  State Baseball

Pirates Fall To Cubs At Wrigley

CHICAGO (AP) — Ian Happ hit a three-run, first-inning drive for his first home run since May 5, Christopher Morel added a three run homer in the eighth and the Chicago Cubs routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-3. Happ had four RBIs and scored three runs for the Cubs, who outhit the Pirates 14-7. Jack Suwinski had a pair of solo homers for the Pirates, who have lost four of six after a six-game winning streak. Suwinski has four homers in his last four games and a team-high 15.

Golden Knights Blast Panthers; Capture First Stanley Cup

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Golden Knights delivered their city a true Vegas-style party from dazzling passes to a Mark Stone hat trick to all-out goal celebrations. The Knights captured the young organization’s first Stanley Cup with a 9-3 romp Tuesday over the beaten up and exhausted Florida Panthers. Coach Bruce Cassidy started five of the original Vegas players known as the Misfits and put the sixth on the second shift. Cassidy sounded confident the day before the game that his team would play well, and it certainly did. Vegas blew open a one-goal game in the second period to lead 6-1.

‘Godfather’ Of Pittsburgh Sports Stan Savran Dies At 76

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Stan Savran, who spent nearly five decades in sports broadcasting chronicling Pittsburgh’s rise to the “City of Champions,” has died. He was 76. WTAE-TV, where Savran worked as a sports anchor in the 1980s and early 1990s, announced Savran’s death. No official cause of death was given but Savran had been very public about his battle with lung cancer in recent years. Savran was known best known for the long-running “SportsBeat” regional cable show he hosted for nearly 20 years in the 1990s and early 2000s, most of them alongside good friend Guy Junker.

Nuggets Take Home First NBA Title

DENVER (AP) — Confetti flying in Denver. The Nuggets sharing hugs while passing around the NBA championship trophy. Scenes that for decades seemed impossible finally turned into reality for the Nuggets. Denver outlasted the Miami Heat 94-89 in an ugly, frantic Game 5 that did nothing to derail Nikola Jokic, who bailed out his teammates with 28 points and 16 rebounds on a night when nothing else seemed to work. The win gave the Nuggets their first title in 47 years in the league. Jokic was named MVP and is the first player to lead everyone in points, rebounds and assists in a single playoffs.
