Pirates Drop Two-Of-Three To Lowly A’s

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Oakland Athletics won back-to-back games for just the third time season as Ryan Noda homered and reached base four times in a 9-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Oakland’s first seven batters reached against Roansy Contreras. All seven scored to give Oakland its second road victory in less than 24 hours following a 15-game slide away from home. Seth Brown had three of the A’s season-high tying 17 hits. Jace Peterson followed up a five-hit night with two more hits, including a two-run double that helped break things open in the first.

Denver Takes 2-1 Lead In NBA Finals

MIAMI (AP) — Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray became the first teammates in NBA Finals history to both record triple-doubles, and Denver’s two stars made sure the Nuggets reclaimed the lead in the series by beating the Miami Heat 109-94 in Game 3 on Wednesday night. Murray had 34 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, getting the rebound he needed with 9 seconds remaining. Jokic finished with 32 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists. Game 4 is Friday in Miami. Jimmy Butler scored 28 points for Miami, and Bam Adebayo finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Heat.

Oklahoma / Florida State Play for WCWS Title

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma can become the first Division I softball program in more than 30 years to win three straight national championships. Florida State ace Kathryn Sandercock — one of the nation’s top pitchers in recent years — stands in the Sooners’ way. Oklahoma (59-1) and Florida State (58-9) will meet Wednesday in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series best-of-three championship series. Oklahoma is on a Division I-record 51-game winning streak and leads the nation in scoring, batting average and home runs. Sandercock has no reason to back down, entering the championship series with a 28-3 record, a 1.05 ERA and 10 saves. She is fourth in the nation in wins, second in saves and sixth in ERA. She also has been on this big stage before as Florida State’s ace in 2021, when the Sooners and Seminoles played for the title. A’s Hammer Pirates; Snap Streak

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jace Peterson homered twice on a five-hit night and drove in five runs, and the Oakland Athletics ended a 15-game road losing streak with an 11-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The major league-worst A’s broke open the game late behind Peterson, whose RBI single off Pirates ace Mitch Keller put Oakland ahead 3-2 in the sixth. Peterson gave Oakland a five-run lead with a two-run homer off Chase De Jong in the eighth, then added another two-run shot off De Jong in the ninth. Pittsburgh’s six-game winning streak was snapped.

PIAA Softball/Baseball First Round

Burgettstown baseball took an early lead, built it to 6-1, and Andrew Bredel retired 10 straight batters to end the game as the Blue Devils reach the quarterfinals for the second straight year. Burgettstown will face District 10 champion Sharpsville in Thursday’s quarterfinals. California wasn’t so fortunate, falling behind 7-1 in the second. The Trojans never recovered and have been eliminated.

On the softball side, Trinity scored five times over the first two innings and rolled to the next round. Maddy Argo, Ryleigh Hoy and Kristina Bozek drove in runs in the first, Hanna Suhoski smashed a two-run home run in the second and the Hillers were off and running. Trinity’s win means a rematch with Shaler in the quarterfinals, the team the Hillers beat in the WPIAL semifinals two weeks back. Chartiers-Houston used an 8-run seventh inning to blow the lid off in the Bucs’ win against Cambridge Springs. Chartiers-Houston will face District 6 champion Claysburg-Kimmel in the quarterfinals. Carmichaels scored early and often, ousting District 9 champion DuBois Central Catholic. Waynesburg took an early lead but couldn’t hold on as the Raiders were eliminated. PGA Tour, Europe To Merge With LIV Golf

The most disruptive year in golf is coming to an end. The PGA Tour and European tour have agreed to a merger with Saudi Arabia’s golf interests. They’re creating a commercial operation designed to unify professional golf around the world. As part of the agreement, all sides are immediately dropping litigation involving LIV Golf. Still to be determine is how players who defected to LIV can return next year, and what LIV Golf will look like going forward. The agreement combines the tours commercial business and rights with those of the Public Investment Fund. That includes LIV Golf.

Pirates Rally To Beat A’s; Stretch Win Streak To Six

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew McCutchen’s tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning lifted Pittsburgh to a 5-4 victory over Oakland on Monday night, extending the Pirates’ win streak to six games and sending the Athletics to their record-tying 15th consecutive road loss. The 15 straight defeats away from home matches the Athletics’ record since they moved from Kansas City in 1968. Oakland set the record in 1986. The major league-worst Athletics (12-50) have lost five games in a row overall. They are on pace to finish the season exactly 100 games under .500 at 31-131. McCutchen also singled and drew three walks to go with two RBIs

Golden Knights Take 2-0 Lead In Stanley Cup Final

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jonathan Marchessault scored twice and started an early blitz that chased the NHL’s hottest postseason goalie, and the Vegas Golden Knights seized control of the Stanley Cup Final with a 7-2 victory over the Florida Panthers in Game 2. Adin Hill continued his stellar play in net with 29 saves for the Golden Knights, who grabbed a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Marchessault also had an assist to finish with three points. Brett Howden scored twice for the Knights, who also got goals from Alec Martinez, Nicolas Roy and Michael Amadio. Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was pulled 7:10 into the second period down 4-0. Matthew Tkachuk and Anton Lundell scored for the Panthers. The series shifts to Florida for Game 3 on Thursday.

Pirates Sweep Cardinals; Win Streak At 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rich Hill kept the St. Louis Cardinals off balance in his longest start of the season and the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep with a 2-1 victory. The 43-year-old Hill allowed just four hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out six. Ji Hwan Bae’s two-run single in the first was all the offense Pittsburgh needed as the Pirates extended their winning streak to five. Andrew Knizner hit his seventh home run of the season for St. Louis. The Cardinals have dropped five of six.

Heat Roar Back To Even NBA Finals

DENVER (AP) — Gabe Vincent scored 23 points, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo each scored 21 and the Miami Heat evened up the NBA Finals by overcoming a monster effort from Nikola Jokic to beat the Denver Nuggets 111-108 in Game 2 on Sunday night. Max Strus scored 14 and Duncan Robinson had 10 for the Heat, who had a big early lead, then got down by as many as 15 — before reclaiming the lead in the fourth. And even then, they had to dig deep to finish it off. Jokic was 16 of 28 from the floor, the last of those shots a 4-footer with 36 seconds left to get the Nuggets within three.
