PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ke’Bryan Hayes homered and tripled, Jack Suwinski drilled his 23rd home run and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2. Pittsburgh won for the sixth time in seven games behind six strong innings from Luis Ortiz, who recovered from an early bout of wildness to send the NL Central-leading Brewers to a second straight loss. Hayes gave the Pirates the lead with a home run off Corbin Burnes in the fifth. Burnes gave up four runs in six innings and is winless in his last eight starts.

Duke Stuns #9 Clemson In ACC Opener

(AP) — Riley Leonard broke loose from a tackler and sprinted to the open for a 44-yard touchdown that highlighted Duke’s tough and physical performance that shocked ninth-ranked Clemson 28-7 in the season opener for both teams. Jaquez Moore and Jordan Waters ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns to turn this into an unexpected blowout of the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference favorite. It was Duke’s first win agianst Clemson since 2004 and ended a 28-game losing streak against top-10 opponents. Cade Klubnik threw for a short touchdown to Will Shipley in what became Clemson’s only score.

Dodgers Pitcher Julio Urias Arrested

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was arrested near BMO Stadium, where Lionel Messi was playing in a Major League Soccer game with numerous celebrities in attendance. Exposition Park public safety said its officers arrested Urías at about 11 p.m. on Sunday inside the park, which is home to the stadium. The department would not immediately disclose what charges Urías was arrested on, but said it would release more details Monday. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department booking records show Urías posted $50,000 bail and was released shortly before 5 a.m. on Monday. He is due in court Sept. 27. Major League Baseball intends to investigate.

Pirates Drop Finale In St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordan Walker homered and Zack Thompson tossed seven effective innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nolan Gorman added a two-run single for the Cardinals, who avoided a three-game sweep. Alec Burleson broke a 3-all tie with a two-run single in the fourth. Miguel Andujar homered for the Pirates, who had their five-game winning streak snapped. Pittsburgh was looking for its first three-game sweep in St. Louis since May 1991. Walker gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead with his 14th homer in the third. He also doubled and scored in the seventh. Thompson allowed three runs and seven hits on 92 pitches. He struck out six. Giovanny Gallegos earned his 10th save.

US Falls To Lithuania At Basketball World Cup

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The U.S. is going to the Paris Olympics next summer. Lithuania made sure that was the only good development for the Americans on Sunday night, when it pulled off a Basketball World Cup stunner. Vaidas Kariniauskas scored 15 points and Lithuania beat the U.S. 110-104 in a second-round game. The loss was the first for the U.S. in 10 games this summer, counting five exhibition games on the way to the World Cup. It came on the night the Americans officially clinched a berth in the Paris Games when Serbia beat the Dominican Republic.

NEW YORK (AP) — After a mild start to the U.S. Open, the forecast calls for much higher temperatures in the second week. That is not a surprise: An Associated Press analysis shows the average high temperatures during the U.S. Open and the three other Grand Slam tennis tournaments steadily have grown hotter and more dangerous in recent decades, reflecting the climate change that created record heat waves around the globe this June and July. The maximum temperatures at those tournaments keep climbing. That can keep athletes from playing their best and, worse, increases the likelihood of heat-related illness. And the U.S. Open often is the hottest of the four majors in any given year.

Pugh completed 19-of-30 passes for 292 yards through the air. Pugh also added 29 yards and a touchdown on the ground. John Peduzzi (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian Academy) hauled in a career-high three touchdown receptions in the victory. Bruno Fabryicki (New Salem, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) intercepted a pair of passes to pace the defensive efforts. Owen Petrisek (Bentleyville, PA/Bentworth) rushed for a game-high 66 yards on eight carries, scoring once.

Penn State Tops WVU In Prime Time Matchup

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Drew Allar threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to help No. 7 Penn State beat West Virginia 38-15 on Saturday night in their season opener. KeAndre Lambert-Smith caught two touchdown passes — including a 72-yard dart launched with a simple flick of Allar’s wrist on his second attempt of the game — while Nick Singleton added a rushing touchdown. Malik McClain caught another midway through the fourth quarter for the Nittany Lions, who pulled away after leading 14-7 at halftime. It was the first time the two regional rivals played since meeting every year from 1947 until 1992.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Phil Jurkovec threw for a touchdown and ran for another in his return to his hometown and Pittsburgh breezed past Wofford 45-0 in their season opener. Jurkovec, a native of the northern Pittsburgh suburbs who transferred to the Panthers over the winter following stops at Notre Dame and Boston College, completed 17 of 23 passes for 214 yards and a 1-yard toss to Karter Johnson. Jurkovec also ran for 41 yards, including a 23-yard sprint to the end zone in the first quarter, as the Panthers had little trouble with the Terriers.

Pirates Edge Cardinals Thanks To Palacios Home Run

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Josh Palacios hit a pinch hit home run off Drew VerHagen in the top of the ninth inning to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 for their fifth straight win. VerHagen entered the game with one out in the ninth inning and hit Andrew McCutchen before Palacios, pinch hitting for Connor Joe, hit a 3-1 pitch into the right field seats for his seventh home run of the season. Jordan Walker, Lars Nootbaar and Tyler O’Neill all homered for the Cardinals.
