Pirates Rally For Win Over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a two-run homer with two out in the eighth inning, helping rally the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. Hayes hit his 11th homer of the season 424 feet to left-center to erase a one-run deficit. In the ninth inning, Liover Peguero added a three-run homer and Jack Suwinski scored on a Kansas City error. The Pirates won the series opener 5-0 on Monday and will try to win three in a row on Wednesday for only second time since the All-Star break. Pittsburgh hasn’t swept a series since June 27-29 against San Diego. Luis Ortiz (3-4) allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of relief to get the victory. Carlos Hernandez (1-9), one of five Kansas City pitchers, gave up the home run to Hayes and took the loss.

Damar Hamlin Makes Bills 53 Man Roster

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has made the 53-player cut. The moment marks the biggest milestone in Hamlin’s bid to resume his football career after a near-death experience during a game at Cincinnati in January. Hamlin is in position to making his regular-season debut when Buffalo travels to play the New York Jets on Sept. 11. Edge rusher Von Miller will miss the first four games rehabbing his surgically repaired right knee after being placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Buffalo placed backup quarterback Matt Barkley on injured reserve.

Venus Williams Suffers Most Lopsided U.S Open Loss

NEW YORK (AP) — Venus Williams’ 100th career U.S. Open match produced her most lopsided loss at the Grand Slam tournament where she won the trophy in 2000 and 2001. Williams was eliminated 6-1, 6-1 by Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the first round on Tuesday night. At 43, Williams is the oldest player in the field. The first 21 times Williams entered the U.S. Open, she went 21-0 in the first round. But this was her third consecutive opening-round loss at Flushing Meadows. The 26-year-old Minnen was born in August 1997, the month before Williams reached the U.S. Open final for the first time.

Oviedo Tosses 2-Hit, Complete Game Shutout

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Johan Oviedo pitched a two-hitter for his first complete game in 53 major league starts, Ke’Bryan Hayes had four hits and Zack Greinke lost his ninth consecutive decision in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 5-0 win and the Kansas City Royals. Oviedo struck out five and walked two while throwing a career-high 112 pitches. It was just the 28th complete game in the major leagues this season and Oviedo’s first complete game in 150 professional starts dating to 2016. The Royals were blanked for the 14th time this season and held to two hits or fewer for the eighth time.

Pat Corrales Dies At 82

ATLANTA (AP) — Former big league manager, coach and catcher Pat Corrales has died at the age of 82. The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that Corrales died of natural causes at his home in the north Georgia mountains. He had worked with the Dodgers since 2012 and served as a special assistant to the general manager. Corrales was a big league catcher over nine seasons in the majors, but he was more notable for his post-playing career. He managed at Texas, Cleveland and Philadelphia before a long stint on the Atlanta Braves coaching staff under Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox.

AP NFL Coaches Rankings; Tomlin Comes In 4th

Andy Reid couldn’t win the big one until he went to Kansas City and got Patrick Mahomes. Now, there’s no telling how many big games the coach affectionately known as “Big Red” will win. Reid was a near-unanimous choice by The Associated Press for the top spot among NFL head coaches, receiving eight of nine first-place votes. A panel of nine AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five head coaches, making their selections based on current status entering the 2023 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points, respectively. Six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick, Kyle Shanahan, Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh.

Cubs Pound Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cody Bellinger had three hits and five RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1. Nico Hoerner had three hits and scored three times, helping Chicago close out a 5-2 road trip. Jeimer Candelario homered and drove in three runs. The 69-61 Cubs took three of four in Pittsburgh. Next up is a big three-game series against NL Central-leading Milwaukee at Wrigley Field beginning on Monday night. Joshua Palacios had two of Pittsburgh’s four hits. Bailey Falter was tagged for six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Report; Steelers Trade Kevin Dotson To Rams

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers are trading guard Kevin Dotson to the Los Angeles Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The terms of the deal are the following, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN: the deal includes pick swaps for each side. The Steelers will get the Rams’ 4th-round pick in 2024, while the Rams get the Steelers 2024 5th-round pick. In 2025, the Steelers will get the Rams’ 5th-round pick, while the Rams will get the Steelers’ 2025 6th-round pick. Dotson is on the move after spending three seasons with the Steelers, including 30 starts since they drafted him in 2020. He missed the team’s final preseason game against the Falcons with a shoulder injury, and for the trade to go through, Dotson will have to pass a physical.

Viktor Hovland Wins FedEx Cup

ATLANTA (AP) — Viktor Hovland is the FedEx Cup champion and it really wasn’t close. Hovland played the best golf of his career in the final two weeks of the PGA Tour season. He capped it off at East Lake by winning the Tour Championship. Hovland started the final round with a six-shot lead and shot a 63. Xander Schauffele made him earn it. He shot a 62. Hovland played the final two weeks in 36-under par to win the last two FedEx Cup playoff events. Now it’s a question whether he gets consideration as the PGA Tour player of the year.

Simone Biles Wins Record 8th U.S Gymnastics Title

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A decade later, Simone Biles is still on top. The gymnastics star has won her record eighth U.S. Championship, a full 10 years after she first ascended to the top of her sport as a teenage prodigy. Biles, now a 26-year-old newlywed considered perhaps the greatest of all time, posted an all-around two-day total of 118.40, well clear of Shilese Jones in second and Leanne Wong in third. Biles will next compete at the world championships in Belgium this fall, where she will look to add to her record total of 25 medals at the meet.
