DETROIT (AP) — Rickie Fowler made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, outlasting Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin two weeks after squandering a chance to win his first major at the U.S. Open. The 34-year-old Fowler got his first PGA Tour victory since winning the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. He had the 54-hole lead at last month’s U.S. Open and in one tournament in each of the previous two years.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Corbin Burnes carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, Christian Yelich hit his 10th home run and the Milwaukee Brewers survived a late rally to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-8. Burnes (6-5) retired the first 15 batters he faced before walking Jared Triolo leading off the sixth. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs and Jack Suwinski ended Burnes’ shot at a no-hitter with a clean two-run single to right field. Yelich hit a three-run homer in the second off Yohan Oviedo (3-9) to break it open. Jesse Winker added a bases-clearing double in the sixth as the Brewers ended Pittsburgh’s four-game winning streak.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are sticking with goaltender Tristan Jarry. The team signed the two-time All-Star to a five-year contract worth around $5.375 million annually rather than let Jarry walk in free agency. Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas says Jarry is one of the better goaltenders in the league and is optimistic he will be able to avoid the injuries that dogged him near the end of each of the last two seasons. The Penguins also signed former New Jersey defenseman Ryan Graves to a six-year deal and inked veteran forward Lars Eller to a two-year contract. The Penguins also signed forward Matt Nieto to a two-year deal, forward Noel Acciari to a three-year contract and goalie Alex Nedeljkovic to a one-year deal.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Carlos Santana hit his eighth career walk-off home run, a two-run shot to cap a three-run ninth inning and rally the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7 for their fourth straight win. With his team trailing 7-5, Andrew McCutchen drew the Pirates within one when he hit a one-out RBI double. Henry Davis grounded out and Santana, a 14-year veteran, drove a pitch from Matt Bush (0-2) deep to right field. Santana also doubled twice, and McCutchen homered among his three hits and had three RBIs. The Pirates used RBI singles by McCutchen in the seventh and Jack Suwinski in the eighth to pull to 7-5. Suwinski had two hits. Rookie Carmen Mlodzinski (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for his first major-league win.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Henry Davis capped his first three-hit game with go-ahead single in a three-run seventh inning that rallied the Pittsburgh Pirates over San Diego 5-4 for a three-game sweep that stretched the Padres’ losing streak to five. San Diego wasted a 4-0 lead in the finale of a series in the Padres were outscored 21-9. San Diego has lost eight of 10, dropping seven games under .500. Davis had two RBIs and raised his average to .351. The start of the game was delayed 45 minutes because of poor air quality caused by Canadian wildfires.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NFL has suspended three players indefinitely for violating the league’s gambling policy and a fourth was sidelined for six games. Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts along with free agent Demetrius Taylor received indefinite suspensions through at least this season for betting on NFL games in 2022. They won’t be able to seek reinstatement until the 2023 season ends. Tennessee Titans right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere was suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season for betting on non-NFL sports at the team’s facility. He is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, including preseason games.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mitch Keller allowed one run in six innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates scored five times in the seventh to rout the San Diego Padres 7-1 on Wednesday night. Keller (9-3) gave up four hits and had five strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander has surrendered one run in three of his four starts since allowing 15 across his previous three. The Pirates have won three of five after a season-worst 10-game losing streak. The five runs in the seventh all came before the first out was recorded. Josh Palacios had a pinch-hit RBI single, and Connor Joe and Henry Davis followed with two-run singles. San Diego has lost four straight and seven of nine to fall to 37-43.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ke’Bryan Hayes has been placed on the 10-day injured list by the Pittsburgh Pirates because of inflammation in his lower back. The move was made retroactive to June 25. The third baseman had missed two games after last playing in a 4-3 loss to Miami on Saturday. Hayes has a .254 batting average with five home runs and 32 RBIs in 74 games this season. Jared Triolo was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis and made his major league debut at third base Wednesday night against San Diego.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees has pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history, retiring every Oakland batter in an 11-0 victory over the Athletics. It was the first perfect game since Seattle Mariners ace Félix Hernández threw one against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012. There were three that season — but none since until Germán finished the first no-hitter in the big leagues this year. Coming off a pair of terrible starts, Germán struck out nine against the A’s, who have the worst record in the majors. The 30-year-old right-hander had never before thrown a complete game in the big leagues. He was winless in six previous outings against Oakland.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — With the 14th overall pick in the NHL Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins have selected Brayden Yager. Yager, a forward, comes to the Penguins from the Moose Jaw Warriors. According to a news release from the Penguins, Yager was the No. 11 ranked North American skater ahead of the draft. Yager is a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and was with the Warriors for three seasons.
