Keller Dominant In Pirates Shutout In Baltimore

May 15, 2023 3:55 am

BALTIMORE (AP) — Mitch Keller struck out a career-high 13 in seven innings and the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates won for only the second time in 13 games, 4-0 over the Baltimore Orioles. The Pirates avoided a sweep after dropping the first two games of the series. Pittsburgh was 20-8 after a 16-1 win at Washington on April 29. Then the Pirates scored just 18 runs in their next 12 games. They managed four Sunday without a single extra-base hit, and that was plenty the way Keller was pitching. Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, who has played in every game this season, pinch-hit in the ninth and popped out to end the game.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado pitcher Ryan Feltner has a skull fracture and concussion after getting hit by a line drive off the bat of Philadelphia’s Nick Castellanos. Feltner was injured Saturday night and was discharged from Swedish Medical Center on Sunday. He will not need surgery. Feltner was put on the 15-day injured list. When asked whether the 26-year-old right-hander will be out for days, weeks or months, Black said “probably on the longer end of that.”

W&J Sweeps to 4th Straight PAC Baseball Title

May 14, 2023 12:01 am

Jacob LaDuca followed up his Friday walk-off home run with a five RBI game in the finals as #1 Washington & Jefferson throttled #3 St. Vincent, 12-3, in the PAC Baseball Championship Tournament. The Presidents have won four straight League titles, 15 overall, 11 of them under head coach Jeff Mountain.  W&J has not lost a Conference tournament game since the final of the 2018 tourney to Thomas More.

Trailing 1-0, Trevor Dean drilled a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, putting the Presidents (31-12) in front to stay. LaDuca picked up the first of his RBIs with a groundout.  Dean added a two-run single in the second and LaDuca stroked a two-run double in the fourth, putting W&J up 8-1. Starting pitcher Shane Fox scattered eight hits over 7.1 innings of work, hit longest and best outing of the season. Tyler Horvat went 3-for-4, scored three times and added to his single-season-school-record stolen base mark with his 27th of the season. Nolan Lutz was 4-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs giving him 30 RBI on the season. Lutz also added five outstanding defensive plays to either save errant throws or run down long foul fly balls. W&J now awaits announcement of the NCAA Division III Baseball regional pairings. That action is due to start Friday, May 19.

Orioles Edge Pirates Saturday

May 14, 2023 7:42 am

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler Wells pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and the Baltimore Orioles used home runs by Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson to beat the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0. Wells had a career-high eight strikeouts and walked two. The only baserunner against the right-hander over the first six innings Saturday night came on a clean, sharp single to left field by Carlos Santana to lead off the second. Wells then retired 17 straight before walking Santana with two outs in the seventh. Roansy Contreras took the loss, giving up two runs in seven innings. Félix Bautista secured his 10th save in 13 chances.

Rookie Tight End Brings Unusual Size, Skill Set To Steelers

May 14, 2023 7:44 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers rookie tight end Darnell Washington may symbolize his team’s “go big” philosophy. The Steelers selected the 6-foot-8 Washington in the third round of the NFL draft, won over by his unusual skill set. Washington made a name for himself as one of the best blocking tight ends in the country while playing at the University of Georgia. He expects to become a bigger part of the passing game in Pittsburgh, which is building around second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Mullins Hits For Cycle As Orioles Top Pirates

May 13, 2023 4:06 am

BALTIMORE (AP) — Cedric Mullins has hit for the cycle for the Baltimore Orioles against Pittsburgh. Mullins hit a single in the third inning, a triple in the fifth, a double in the seventh and a three-run homer in the eighth. He became the seventh Oriole to accomplish the feat and first since Austin Hays on June 22, 2022 against Washington. After completing the cycle with his home run, Mullins received a standing ovation when he took the field defensively for the top of the ninth. Baltimore beat the Pirates 6-3.
