Burgettstown baseball took an early lead, built it to 6-1, and Andrew Bredel retired 10 straight batters to end the game as the Blue Devils reach the quarterfinals for the second straight year. Burgettstown will face District 10 champion Sharpsville in Thursday’s quarterfinals. California wasn’t so fortunate, falling behind 7-1 in the second. The Trojans never recovered and have been eliminated.
On the softball side, Trinity scored five times over the first two innings and rolled to the next round. Maddy Argo, Ryleigh Hoy and Kristina Bozek drove in runs in the first, Hanna Suhoski smashed a two-run home run in the second and the Hillers were off and running. Trinity’s win means a rematch with Shaler in the quarterfinals, the team the Hillers beat in the WPIAL semifinals two weeks back. Chartiers-Houston used an 8-run seventh inning to blow the lid off in the Bucs’ win against Cambridge Springs. Chartiers-Houston will face District 6 champion Claysburg-Kimmel in the quarterfinals. Carmichaels scored early and often, ousting District 9 champion DuBois Central Catholic. Waynesburg took an early lead but couldn’t hold on as the Raiders were eliminated. They’re creating a commercial operation designed to unify professional golf around the world. As part of the agreement, all sides are immediately dropping litigation involving LIV Golf. Still to be determine is how players who defected to LIV can return next year, and what LIV Golf will look like going forward. The agreement combines the tours commercial business and rights with those of the Public Investment Fund. That includes LIV Golf.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew McCutchen’s tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning lifted Pittsburgh to a 5-4 victory over Oakland on Monday night, extending the Pirates’ win streak to six games and sending the Athletics to their record-tying 15th consecutive road loss. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rich Hill kept the St. Louis Cardinals off balance in his longest start of the season and the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep with a 2-1 victory. The 43-year-old Hill allowed just four hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out six. Ji Hwan Bae’s two-run single in the first was all the offense Pittsburgh needed as the Pirates extended their winning streak to five. Andrew Knizner hit his seventh home run of the season for St. Louis. The Cardinals have dropped five of six.

DENVER (AP) — Gabe Vincent scored 23 points, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo each scored 21 and the Miami Heat evened up the NBA Finals by overcoming a monster effort from Nikola Jokic to beat the Denver Nuggets 111-108 in Game 2 on Sunday night. Max Strus scored 14 and Duncan Robinson had 10 for the Heat, who had a big early lead, then got down by as many as 15 — before reclaiming the lead in the fourth. And even then, they had to dig deep to finish it off. Jokic was 16 of 28 from the floor, the last of those shots a 4-footer with 36 seconds left to get the Nuggets within three.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz remains confident he will return sometime this season. Cruz hasn’t played since fracturing his left ankle during an awkward slide home against the Chicago White Sox in early April. The 6-foot-7 Cruz is still using crutches and a walking boot to get around but says he is focusing on coming back better than he was before the injury. Pittsburgh has remained in contention in the NL Central even without Cruz. The Pirates are hovering around the .500 mark thanks in part to the play of reserves Rodolfo Castro and Tucupita Marcano, who are filling in at shortstop while Cruz works his way back.
