South Fayette played even early, outscored Archbishop wood in the second half but the Vikings’ controlled a seven-minute stretch of the first half and parlayed that into their eighth girls basketball state championship, downing the Lions, 61-54. Wood led by two at the under-four break in the first quarter. 6:24 later, the District 12 champs had run out by 16, what proved to be their biggest lead of the game. Erica Hall and Ryan Oldaker did all the could to keep South Fayette within striking distance, scoring all 12 of the Lions’ second-quarter points, going to the locker room down, 37-24. The teams traded 11 points apiece in the third and Wood slowed the game down, taking time off the clock on each possession. After the media time-out with 3:37 to play, South Fayette pressed Wood into several turnovers, cutting the deficit to five points, but could get no closer.
Hall led South Fayette with 17 points. Delaney Finnegan, a lockdown defender for Wood, held the Lions’ leading scorer, Maddie Webber, to just 11 points, the final three coming at the end of the game. Ava Leroux had 10 points for the WPIAL champions. Point guard Ava Renninger’s dribble drive gave the Lions defense trouble all she. The junior finished with a game-high 21 points. Deja Evans had 17, Kara Meredith add 13 including a trio of three-pointers.
Wood has now won three straight state titles, capturing the 4A top spot in 2021 & 2022. Their eight championships and three title game losses have all come since 2010. PIAA Brackets

LAS VEGAS (AP) — March has gone from madness to unprecedented. With Miami’s win over Houston and San Diego State’s takedown of Alabama, the men’s NCAA Tournament will not have a No. 1 seed in the Elite Eight for the first time since seeding began in 1979. Purdue, Kansas, Houston and Alabama are all gone, ensuring the Final Four will not have a No. 1 team for the first time since 2011 and the third overall. The four teams deemed by the NCAA to be the best in the country combined to win five tournament games this year. That’s the fewest by three among No. 1 seeds since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

DALLAS (AP) — Joe Pavelski scored the tiebreaking goal on a third-period power play, and the Stars overcame Sidney Crosby’s first career goal in Dallas in a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Roope Hintz and Jamie Benn also scored as the Stars moved a point ahead of Minnesota atop the Central Division with the Wild’s 5-4 shootout loss in Philadelphia. Crosby’s 548th career goal was the 35-year-old’s first in 10 games at the home of the Stars and gave him at least one in all of the other 31 NHL arenas. Miro Heiskanen assisted on Pavelski’s goal for a 12-game point streak that set a franchise record for a Dallas defenseman.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins needs surgery for a torn ACL after injuring his left knee while fielding a grounder in a spring training game and is expected to miss a significant amount of time. The Phillies did not say when Hoskins would have the surgery or exactly how long the slugging first baseman might be sidelined. Hoskins hit 30 homers with 79 RBIs last season for the reigning National League champions. He was backing up to play a chopper on Thursday when the ball popped out of his glove. Hoskins, a free agent at the end of the season who turned 30 last week, hit six homers in Philadelphia’s playoff run last season. The Phillies lost to the Houston Astros in the World Series.

DENVER (AP) — Jeff Carter had a pair of goals, Sidney Crosby scored on a nifty backhand shot in the second period to reach the 30-goal mark for an 11th season and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2. Crosby moved into a tie with Hall-of-Fame center Mario Lemieux for the most 30-goal seasons in Penguins history. Even more, Crosby’s the first player in league history to post a 30-goal campaign at 18 years old and again when he was 35-plus, according to NHL Stats. Jake Guentzel also scored and Bryan Rust added an empty-netter for the Penguins, who snapped a four-game slide. J.T. Compher and Devon Toews had goals for the Avalanche.
