Mariners Shut Out Pirates Saturday

SEATTLE (AP) — Luis Castillo struck out 10 in six crisp innings, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0. Castillo allowed one hit — Tucupita Marcano’s double on the game’s first pitch — and walked two. The right-hander earned his second straight win since dropping consecutive starts. Gabe Speier, Matt Brash, Trevor Gott and Justin Topa then combined for three innings of one-hit ball for Seattle. The Mariners backed Castillo with three runs in the first and one in the second. Pittsburgh right-hander Vince Velasquez departed after two innings due to discomfort in his pitching elbow.

Celtics Force Game 7 In WCF

MIAMI (AP) — Derrick White scored on a putback as time expired and the Boston Celtics moved to the brink of the greatest comeback in NBA playoff history, holding off the Miami Heat 104-103 to force a Game 7 in the Eastern Conference finals. Jayson Tatum scored 31 points, Jaylen Brown scored 26 and Marcus Smart added 21 for the Celtics. Jimmy Butler made three free throws with 3.0 seconds left for a one-point Heat lead. Smart missed a 3-pointer, but White grabbed the rebound and scored as time expired. Butler scored 24 points and Caleb Martin scored 21 for the Heat.

Game 6 On The Way Between Stars And Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS (AP) — With Dallas’ season on the line, the Stars got two critical goals from a player who was a healthy scratch the first two games of the Western Conference Final. Ty Dellandrea’s goals came within a 1:27 span midway through the third period, and the Stars beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on Saturday to keep alive their hopes of advancing to the Stanley Cup Final to face the Florida Panthers. The Stars escaped elimination for the second game in a row and head to Dallas for Game 6 on Monday night down 3-2. Dallas is attempting to become the fifth team in NHL history to win a series after being down 3-0.

2 Horses Die From Injuries At Churchill Downs, Bringing Total To 12

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Two horses have died the past two days following injuries at Churchill Downs. They are the 11th and 12th fatalities over the past month at the home of the Kentucky Derby. Mare Kimberley Dream was euthanized after sustaining a distal sesamodean ligament rupture to her front leg during Saturday’s first race. Lost in Limbo was euthanized following a similar injury just before the finish line in Friday’s seventh race. A Kentucky steward’s report from May 13 lists the previously unreported death of Bosque Redondo after finishing 10th in the seventh race from an unspecified injury.

Pirates Crack 7 Homers Against Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) — Andrew McCutchen hit the 21st leadoff homer of his career, the first of four home runs off Seattle starter George Kirby, and the Pittsburgh Pirates matched a franchise record with seven long balls on their way to an 11-6 win over the Mariners. The seven home runs more than doubled Pittsburgh’s previous high for a game this season of three and marked the third time since 1901 the Pirates hit seven in a game. They previously did it in 2003 and 1947, both against St. Louis. Jack Suwinski hoemered twice. Bryan Reynolds, Carlos Santana, Ke’Bryan Hayes and Tucupita Marcano all hit solo shots for Pittsburgh. J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodríguez homered for Seattle.

Baseball & Softball Championship Week Set

Four Washington County baseball/softball teams, along with a pair of Greene County softball squads, will be in action during WPIAL Championship Week following the Memorial Day weekend.  California baseball, Trinity and Carmichaels softball have WPIAL Championship dates awaiting them next week.  Burgettstown baseball faces a must-win game to reach the state playoffs while Chartiers-Houston & Waynesburg softball teams have state tune-up games on the schedule. NHL; Stars Stay Alive With Overtime Win

DALLAS (AP) — Joe Pavelski scored on a power play at 3:18 of overtime and the Dallas Stars avoided a sweep in the Western Conference final with a 3-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night. Jason Robertson scored twice for his first career multigoal playoff game for Dallas, which played without suspended captain Jamie Benn. Jake Oettinger had 37 saves, two nights after he was pulled 7:10 into Game 3 after allowing three goals on five shots. William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault scored for Vegas.

NBA; Celtics Extend East Finals

BOSTON (AP) — Derrick White had 24 points, including six 3-pointers, helping lead the charge as the Boston Celtics dominated the Miami Heat 110-97 in Game 5 on to extend the Eastern Conference finals. Marcus Smart had 23 points and five steals. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown finished with 21 points apiece as the Celtics claimed their second straight win and trimmed Miami’s series lead to 3-2. It keeps alive Boston’s hopes of becoming the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven series. Game 6 is Saturday in Miami. Duncan Robinson led the Heat with 18 points.

Softball Semifinals; Baseball Champ Week Sites/Times Set

Trinity built a 4-0 early lead only to see Shaler tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. In the ninth, Kristina Bozek reach on an error, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a foul sac fly to give the Hillers the win over Shaler, reaching the WPIAL softball finals for the first time since 2009. Trinity got a pair of home runs from Hanna Suhoski and RBI singles from winning pitcher Taylor Dunn and Amber Morgan to take the early lead. Shaler scored twice in the third, another in the fifth. Rangers Take 2 of 3 from Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Martín Pérez pitched seven strong innings, Marcus Semien hit his eighth home run and the Texas Rangers held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2. Pérez (6-1) allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts to win his fifth straight decision. The 32-year-old left-hander kept the Pirates in check inducing 12 groundball outs, including a pair of inning-ending double plays. Johan Oviedo threw the second “Immaculate Inning” by a Pittsburgh pitcher this season when he struck out the side on nine pitches in the fourth inning. It wasn’t enough for the Pirates to avoid falling to 5-15 in May.
