Despite Merger – NCAA Affirms Continuation Of Independent Athletic Programs

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – College sports’ governing body is giving its permission for six state-owned universities in Pennsylvania to continue to compete as separate entities despite merging into two umbrella institutions. The State System of Higher Education announced the decision Wednesday that pertains to sports in Division II at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield, California, Clarion and Edinboro universities. The NCAA has yet to rule on a small number of Division I teams the schools also field. California, Clarion and Edinboro merged last year into Pennsylvania Western University, or PennWest. The others are now Commonwealth University. The schools compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Pirates Get Swept In Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Brandon Woodruff pitched hitless ball into the sixth inning, Rowdy Tellez homered for the second straight day and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 for a three-game sweep. Woodruff gave up just one hit, a one-out single by former teammate Daniel Vogelbach in the sixth. After pitching five shutout innings in a win over St. Louis in his last outing, Woodruff struck out nine and walked two in six scoreless innings to beat the Pirates. Josh Hader earned his sixth save in six tries, finishing off Milwaukee’s fourth straight win. Tellez hit a solo homer and Keston Hiura later added a three-run drive.

Capitals Now Tied With Penguins In Metro

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Shea Theodore scored in overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights past the Washington Capitals 4-3 on Wednesday night. Theodore dangled his way through two defenders and deked his way to a backhand winner past Washington goaltender Ilya Samsonov, and in the process keeping their slim playoff hopes alive. Vegas has 89 points and is two back of Dallas for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference, and trails Los Angeles by three in the Pacific Division.

Jay Wright Resigns At Villanova

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Jay Wright shocked college basketball Wednesday night with his immediate resignation at Villanova, the Big East program he led to two national championships and four Final Fours in a Hall of Fame career. The 60-year-old Wright guided Villanova to titles in 2016 and 2018 and just led the Wildcats to the Final Four, where they lost to national champion Kansas. He went 520-197 in 21 seasons at the school and 642-282 overall, also coaching Hofstra from 1994-2001. Kyle Neptune, who served on the Villanova coaching staff before accepting the head coaching position at Fordham in 2021, returned to replace Wright. Wright will remain at Villanova and stay involved in fundraising, advising, education and more.

NHL; Rangers Record 3rd Straight Shutout

NEW YORK (AP) –  Ryan Strome scored twice, Adam Fox added a goal and Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves as the New York Rangers recorded a third-straight shutout and their 50th win of the season, 3-0 over the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night.  Eric Comrie made 31 saves for the Jets. Winnipeg trails the Dallas Stars by 10 points in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Jets have five games remaining. The Rangers are tied with Carolina atop the Metropolitan Division.

 

Bruins Win In OT; Head To Pittsburgh

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Charlie McAvoy scored 48 seconds into overtime to lift the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. Jake DeBrusk and Taylor Hall also scored for Boston, which won its second straight after a season-high three-game losing streak. Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich scored for St. Louis, which had a nine-game winning streak snapped. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins. Ville Husso made 32 saves for St. Louis and had a six-game winning streak snapped. Boston will face the Penguins Thursday night at PPG Paints Arena.

Yelich’s Slam Sparks Brewers Over Pirates

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Christian Yelich belted a grand slam for his first homer of the season and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1. Yelich’s two-out slam capped a five-run rally off Pirates starter Zach Thompson in the fourth inning. The 429-foot blast was Yelich’s fourth career grand slam. Eric Lauer got the win for Milwaukee, allowing one run and five hits in six innings while striking out five and walking one. Pittsburgh got its only run in the fourth on rookie Diego Castillo’s first career homer, which came one pitch after Castillo swung at a slider from Lauer that hit him in the knee.

Browns Speak To NFL On ‘Tanking’ Claims

UNDATED (AP) – The Cleveland Browns have spoken to an NFL investigator looking into claims by former coach Hue Jackson, who said the team intentionally lost games in 2016 and 2017.  Jackson, now coaching at Grambling State, indicated in a series of posts on social media that the Browns paid him bonuses incentivizing him to lose. Jackson later softened those claims. The Browns went 1-15 in 2016 and 0-16 in 2017 under Jackson. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed the league engaged former SEC chair Mary Jo White to look into Jackson’s allegations. The team said it welcomed the chance to address Jackson’s claims.

Chavis Leads Pirates To Comeback Win Over Nationals

PITTSBURGH (AP) –  Michael Chavis drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates came from behind to beat the Washington Nationals 5-3 and take the four-game series.Chavis’ single to left field against Nationals reliever Steve Cishek (0-1) scored Josh VanMeter to put the Pirates in the lead and complete the comeback from down 3-0. Pittsburgh also came back from three runs down to beat Washington in the first game of the series on Thursday.
