NCAA; First Four Action

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) – Bryson Etienne scored 21 points and Texas Southern beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 76-67 in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament.  The Cowboys earned their third NCAA Tournament win in five seasons and will play top-seeded Kansas in the Midwest first round. The First Four returned to the University of Dayton Arena for the first time in three seasons.  PJ Henry hit a go-ahead free throw to highlight a 7-0 run in which Texas Southern took the lead and never surrendered. He finished with 14 points and shot 10 of 13 at the free throw line.
Later in the evening, Trayce Jackson-Davis had 29 points and nine rebounds, Jordan Geromino scored a career-high 15 points and Indiana beat turnover-prone Wyoming 66-58 in a First Four game.  With the crowd at University of Dayton Arena heavily tilted – Bloomington, Indiana, is less than a three-hour drive away – the Hoosiers led by as many as 10 with under two minutes left in the game. Hunter Maldonado paced the Cowboys with 21 points but turned the ball over 10 times. Graham Ike had 17 to go along with and nine rebounds.

Penguins Fall To Predators In Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Juuse Saros made 35 saves to lead the Nashville Predators to a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mattias Ekholm, Tanner Jeannot, Eeli Tolvanen and Yakov Trenin scored for the Predators, who have won five of six. Roman Josi had three assists and Colton Sissons added two. Jake Guentzel had the lone goal and Casey DeSmith stopped 21 shots for Pittsburgh, which won its previous two games.

Steelers Sign QB Mitchell Trubisky

PITTSBURGH (AP) –  A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that Mitchell Trubisky is going to get a shot at replacing Ben Roethlisberger. Trubisky and the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms on a two-year contract that will give Trubisky a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job following Roethlisberger’s retirement in January. The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet official. Financial details were not disclosed.

Plenty Of Dealing In MLB

The Seattle Mariners have acquired All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Eugenio Suarez from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a package of players. Seattle is sending the Reds pitcher Justin Dunn, outfielder Jake Fraley and top pitching prospect Brandon Williamson and a player to be named.
– The Texas Rangers have signed free agent outfielder Jake Marisnick, right-handed reliever Brandon Workman and lefty Matt Moore to minor league contracts that include invitations to big league spring training. Clayton Kershaw can earn $5 million in performance bonuses for starts as part of his new contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which would raise his earnings to $22 million. Kershaw’s deal calls for a $2.5 million signing bonus, payable within 15 days of the deal’s approval by the commissioner’s office. He gets a $14.5 million salary and would earn $1 million apiece for 16, 20, 22, 24 and 26 starts. The 33-year-old left-hander was coming off a $93 million, three-year deal.
– Freddie Freeman’s tenure with the Atlanta Braves appears to be over after the World Series champions acquired All-Star first baseman Matt Olson from the Oakland Athletics. The A’s are getting a prize package of four players from Atlanta, including young outfielder Cristian Pache, in the deal.
– The San Diego Padres say All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. likely will need surgery for a broken left wrist and could miss up to three months for an injury suffered the injury in the offseason.

 

Cal U. Men Advance To NCAA Regional Championship

The California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team is headed to the Atlantic Regional Championship after beating West Virginia State 67-65 Sunday. The Vulcans improve to 23-9 on the season and will face top-seed and host IUP Tuesday evening. Cal U went on a 24-3 run in the second half to advance. The Vulcans return to the regional championship for the first time since 2008.

Zags, Wildcats, Jayhawks & Bears Are Top Seeds

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Gonzaga, Arizona, Kansas and Baylor have drawn the top seeds for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  The Zags top the West bracket and enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the fifth time.  The Wildcats are the top seed in the South Region, the seventh time at No.1 and the first since 2014.  Kansas is No. 1 in the Midwest, the Jayhawks’ 15th time atop a regional.  Defending national champion Baylor is a No. 1 seed for a second straight NCAA Tournament, although the Bears come off a loss in the Big 12 semifinals.  Duke is No. 2 in the West Region, followed by Texas Tech and Arkansas.  Villanova, Tennessee and Illinois fill out the top 4 seeds in the South.  Auburn, Wisconsin and Providence round out the top 4 in the Midwest.  Kentucky is No. 2 in the region, just ahead of Purdue and UCLA.  The Big Ten leads all conferences with nine teams in the tournament.  Texas A&M and Oklahoma are among the biggest snubs by the NCAA Tournament Committee.  The Aggies advanced to the SEC title game by upsetting Auburn and Arkansas, but a 1-8 stretch appears to have sealed their fate. Oklahoma put together a late five-game winning streak that included a win over Baylor in the Big 12 quarterfinals.

Penguins Hold On To Beat Carolina

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Brian Boyle, Danton Heinen and Zach Aston-Reese scored to take some of the pressure off Sidney Crosby, Tristan Jarry stopped 41 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2. Crosby scored an empty-netter to reach the 20-goal plateau for the 14th time as the Penguins beat the Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes for the first time in three tries. Brett Pesce scored his fifth of the season and Sebastian Aho added his 27th but Carolina lost in regulation for just the second time in its last 12 games.

NFL; Brady Returning To Bucs

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ search for a starting quarterback is over after the old one decided to unretire.  Tom Brady has announced that he’ll be back for a 23rd NFL season. The seven-time Super Bowl champion announced his decision on Twitter and Instagram, saying he has “unfinished business.”  The 43-year-old Brady led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title following the 2020 season and NFC South championship last season.

State Wrestling Final Day

The PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships finished on Saturday.

AA 5th place bouts Parker Sentipal (Burgettstown), Chris Vargo (Bentworth) both won to finish fifth.
AA 7th place bouts Gaven Suica (Burgettstown), Kyle McCollum (Beth-Center), Tyler Berish (Beth-Center) each lost and finished eighth.

AAA Championship bouts Waynesburg teammates Mac Church and Rocco Welsh won championships Saturday night, helping the Raiders to a third-place finish in the team points race.  Ty Watters (West Allegheny), Dylan Evans (Chartiers Valley) and Brian Finnerty (Thomas Jefferson) also won title bouts. Finnerty’s gave TJ its first-ever state title. Belle Vernon’s Cole Weightman, seeking the Leopards’ first, lost to Finnerty in the final.
AAA 3rd place bouts Maddox Shaw (Thomas Jefferson) and Mac Stout (Mt. Lebanon) won, finishing third. Matthew Furman (Canon-McMillan) and Shawn Taylor (West Allegheny) lost their bouts and finished fourth.
AAA 5th place bouts Colton Stoneking (Waynesburg) won to take fifth. Jacob Houpt (Canon-McMillan), Zander Phatorus (Waynesburg) and Logan Hoffman (Belle Vernon) lost and finish sixth.
AAA 7th place bouts Noah Tustin (Waynesburg) won and claimed seventh place.

State Hoops Second Round

The PIAA Basketball playoffs end Saturday for Fort Cherry, falling to District 6 champion Portage. The Mustangs hit eight three-pointers in the first half, raced to a 24-point lead at intermission and the Rangers couldn’t recover. The Chartiers Valley girls sprinted away from D-6 champion Hollidaysburg over the final 12 minutes to reach the state quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. The Colts and Tigers were tied at 40 with four minutes to play in the third. Chartiers Valley rolled up 19 of the next 21 points and then cruised to the win. Click for PIAA brackets

All Saturday games at eastern PA sites were postponed, most to Sunday but some to Monday night due to the snow storm.
