Pirates Get Shutout By Cincinnati

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Connor Overton got his first major league win and combined with two relievers on a four-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds’ first shutout of the season, a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Overton allowed three hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings with one strikeout. The 28-year-old right-hander got nine outs on ground balls. Luis Cessa got five straight outs, and Art Warren finished. Cincinnati has the worst record in the major leagues at 8-24; the Reds are 3-1 against Pirates and 5-23 against other teams.

Crosby Leaves In 2nd Period; Penguins Lose To Rangers

NEW YORK (AP) – The Pittsburgh Penguins were leading 2-0 in Game 5 of their first-round series against the New York Rangers when star center Sidney Crosby headed to the dressing room with about seven minutes left in the second period. He was knocked to the ice minutes earlier after a hard high hit from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba while the Penguins had the puck in the offensive zone. Following his departure, New York scored three times on three consecutive shots over a 2:42 span to take the lead. They scored two more in the third period to win 5-3 and send the series back to Pittsburgh for Game 6 with the Penguins lead 3-2.

Pirates Wrap-Up Series With Dodgers With A 5-3 Win

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Daniel Vogelbach hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh and the Pittsburgh Pirates took a series from the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time in nearly five years with a 5-3 victory. Vogelbach lined a shot to the seats in right field off Daniel Hudson, putting the Pirates back in front after they squandered a three-run lead in the top of the seventh. Edwin Rios hit a three-run double for Los Angeles.

Softball/Baseball Playoff Spots Set

Playoff spots have either been clinched or lost for teams in the Washington/Greene area. A handful of spots are still available in other sections but those opportunities end in the next day or two. Softball section games have to be completed by the end of Wednesday, baseball one day later.  The WPIAL will release playoff brackets later this week.

Tom Brady To Join Fox Sports When Playing Career Ends

UNDATED (AP) – Tom Brady will join Fox Sports as a football announcer when his playing career ends. That announcement was made Tuesday by Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch on an investor call.
Brady had announced his retirement at the end of last season, but later renounced it and said he was going to play at least another season as the Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback. Signing the seven-time Super Bowl champion was a coup for Fox after its top football announcing team, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, recently left for ESPN.

Patrick Marleau Retires After 23 Year NHL Career

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Patrick Marleau has announced his retirement from hockey after a 23-year career and the most games played in NHL history.  Marleau made the announcement at the Shark Tank in San Jose, where he played 21 of his 23 seasons. Marleau retires having broken Gordie Howe’s games played record and with 566 goals and two Olympic gold medals.
In other NHL news: The Montreal Canadiens are hosting the NHL draft in July and will have the right to the No. 1 pick. Montreal won the draft lottery on Tuesday night. Montreal will host this year’s event on July 7 and 8.

Penguins Take 3-1 Series Lead With Home Win Over Rangers

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists to become the sixth player in NHL history to reach 200 career playoff points and the Pittsburgh Penguins throttled the New York Rangers 7-2 to take a 3-1 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Jake Guentzel scored for the fourth consecutive game and Jeff Carter, Danton Heinen, Mark Friedman and Mike Matheson also beat Igor Shesterkin as the Penguins chased the Vezina Trophy favorite for the second time in three days to move within one game of advancing in the postseason for the first time since 2018. Shesterkin sat out the third period after giving up six goals on 30 shots.

Pirates Beat Dodgers For First Time In Nearly Four Years

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Jose Quintana pitched six scoreless innings for his first win since 2019 and the first victory by a Pittsburgh starting pitcher this season as the Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1. The Pirates also ended a 16-game losing streak against the Dodgers dating to 2018 and snapped Los Angeles’ six-game winning streak. Quintana allowed four hits and four walks while striking out five. His previous win came on Sept. 5, 2019 at Milwaukee while pitching for the Chicago Cubs. The veteran left-hander has been plagued by injuries and ineffectiveness in recent seasons, going 20 starts and 42 appearances between victories.

Needing a win to clinch a 2A playoff berth, Chartiers-Houston blanked Carlynton in five innings, securing the post-season bid. In other playoff impact games, Charleroi lost to Yough and, with that, their 3A playoff hopes. The Cougars opened with three straight wins but lost six of their last seven section games to miss the playoffs by one game. Ringgold lost to section leader West Mifflin. The Rams have now been eliminated from the 4A playoff chase.
