PHOENIX (AP) – One of MLB’s most visible rule changes for 2023 is a sizable curtailing of infield shifts. The practice had grown exponentially over the past several years and has been partially blamed for a steady league-wide decline in batting average. The new rule states that all four infielders must have both feet within the outer boundary of the infield – and two infielders must be on each side of second base – when the pitch is delivered. MLB has also mandated that the infield dirt cutout have uniform dimensions in all 30 ballparks. The outfield edge of the dirt must be 95 feet from the front of the pitching rubber.

The first round of the WPIAL basketball playoffs wrapped Tuesday night with one of the biggest upsets as #14 Clairton knocked off #3 Ft. Cherry, ousting a returning WPIAL finalist. The Bears hit a number of early three pointers and took the Rangers out of their game. Elsewhere in boys action, Eden Christian grabbed an early 15-2 lead on Burgettstown and never looked back. Chartiers-Houston trailed only 27-26 halfway through the third quarter but Shenango outscored the Bucs 32-12 the rest of the way, cruising to victory. Avery Molek led the Bucs with 11 points, Jake Mele added 10.
On the girls side, Trinity led by 18 halfway through the fourth quarter but had to hold off Latrobe’s late rally to advance. Washington County is down to six remaining teams heading into the quarterfinals (5 girls, 1 boys). Greene County has two girls teams still in contention. SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) – Of all of baseball’s tweaks under Commissioner Rob Manfred, the pitch clock might be the one that affects the most players. Whether you’re a pitcher, a catcher, a hitter or a baserunner, there’s no hiding from this rule change. The goal is to speed up play by limiting the parts of the game fans find particularly tedious. The clocks will count down from 30 seconds between batters. Between pitches, it will be 15 seconds with nobody on and 20 if there’s a baserunner. There are also limits on pickoff attempts that could help potential base stealers.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Bo Horvat and Anders Lee scored less than 2 minutes apart in the third period to spark the New York Islanders to a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Horvat beat Tristan Jarry to the short side with 11:26 remaining to tie it. Jarry turned it over behind the Pittsburgh net moments later, kickstarting a sequence that ended with Lee jamming it home to give the injury-ravaged Islanders the lead. Brock Nelson scored twice for New York. Jarry made 28 saves in his return from a month-long absence due to an upper-body injury.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Jayson Tatum put on a record-setting show, and made Giannis Antetokounmpo look like a genius. Tatum scored an All-Star Game-record 55 points, and Team Giannis ended LeBron James’ hold on All-Star captain supremacy by beating Team LeBron 184-175 in the NBA’s annual showcase exhibition game Game on Sunday night. Tatum had 27 of his points in the third quarter, another All-Star Game record for any period. He was the first pick by Antetokounmpo in the starters’ portion of the All-Star draft, and in the end, that pick proved to absolutely be the right one.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Jon Rahm is back to No. 1 in the world and looking very much the part. He won the Genesis Invitational with a 69 in the final round at Riviera. That gives him a two-shot victory over Max Homa and a trophy presented by tournament host Tiger Woods. Woods played his first 72-hole tournament since the Masters last April. He shot 73 and tied for 45th. Rahm now has three wins in five starts this year on the PGA Tour. He has five wins in his last nine tournaments worldwide. He has made $9.4 million the last two months.
