Houston returned to No. 1 in the AP men’s college basketball poll for the third time this season while Northwestern and Texas A&M barged into the rankings after each had a pair of impressive wins last week. The Cougars picked up 48 first-place votes from the 62-member national media panel with just two weeks left in the regular season. Alabama dropped one spot after losing to Tennessee and routing Georgia in its lone week at No. 1. The Crimson Tide held onto seven first-place votes, while Kansas also earned seven to climb two spots to No. 3. North Carolina State and Florida Atlantic dropped out after each lost games last week.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Jayson Tatum put on a record-setting show, and made Giannis Antetokounmpo look like a genius. Tatum scored an All-Star Game-record 55 points, and Team Giannis ended LeBron James’ hold on All-Star captain supremacy by beating Team LeBron 184-175 in the NBA’s annual showcase exhibition game Game on Sunday night. Tatum had 27 of his points in the third quarter, another All-Star Game record for any period. He was the first pick by Antetokounmpo in the starters’ portion of the All-Star draft, and in the end, that pick proved to absolutely be the right one.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Jon Rahm is back to No. 1 in the world and looking very much the part. He won the Genesis Invitational with a 69 in the final round at Riviera. That gives him a two-shot victory over Max Homa and a trophy presented by tournament host Tiger Woods. Woods played his first 72-hole tournament since the Masters last April. He shot 73 and tied for 45th. Rahm now has three wins in five starts this year on the PGA Tour. He has five wins in his last nine tournaments worldwide. He has made $9.4 million the last two months.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the Daytona 500 in double overtime and under caution Sunday night in the longest running of “The Great American Race.” The two overtimes pushed the 65th running of the race to a record 212 laps – 12 laps beyond the scheduled distance. Stenhouse’s win in a Chevrolet for JTG Daugherty Racing was the third of his career. His only other victories came in 2017 – at Talladega and the summer race at Daytona. His race team is partially owned by former NBA player Brad Daugherty.

Washington & Jefferson College won both women’s & men’s basketball championships a year ago. Each has taken the first steps in defending those titles, finishing atop the League standings and earning the top seeds for the upcoming PAC Conference eight-team playoff brackets. The W&J women will host #8 Geneva Monday at 7 pm. The Presidents swept the two-game regular season series, 76-55 and 87-64. Tuesday, the Presidents’ men host #8 Grove City. Game time is also 7 pm. W&J won both regular season games, 84-83 and 87-63. Semifinals will be Wednesday/Thursday. The championship games will be played Saturday on the campus of the highest remaining seeds. WPIAL team champion Burgettstown advanced 11 wrestlers to the WPIAL Individual Championships to lead the way out of the Southern Sectional. The top six wrestlers in each weight class advance to step two on four-week road to the state championships. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nico Hischier had two goals and two assists, Vitek Vanecek made 29 saves and the New Jersey Devils breezed past the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2. Dougie Hamilton, Dawson Mercer and Jesper Bratt also scored for the Devils. New Jersey improved to an NHL-best 21-4-3 on the road by sending the struggling Penguins to their third loss in four games. Evgeni Malkin scored twice for Pittsburgh to reach the 20-goal plateau for the 14th time in his career. Dustin Tokarski stopped 38 shots while making just his third start of the season.

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Grant Basile posted his fourth straight game with 20 or more points and Virginia Tech knocked Pittsburgh out of first place in the ACC with a 79-72 upset win. Pitt is now 12-4 in ACC play, in third place a full game behind first-place No. 11 Virginia and a half-game behind No. 15 Miami. The Panthers have four games left in the regular season, including a regular-season finale at Miami.

Avonworth led the McGuffey girls by nine at intermission, then powered in 13 straight points to open the third quarter. The Antlelopes never looked back. Alexis Ewig led the Highlanders with 9 points, most of them in the final period. Neshannock led 45-16 at the half, led by a school-record 40 points from Marian Haggerty. Bella Carroto led Charleroi with 10 points. Waynesburg advanced with a win in the 8-9 game, paced by Kaley Rohanna’s 31 points. Josie Horne added a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds).

The winners all advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals. The 2A girls winners also clinched berths in the PIAA tournament where the WPIAL qualifies eight teams.
Chartiers-Houston girls built a 10-point halftime lead only to see Ft. Cherry tie the game early in the fourth before the Bucs held off the upset bid. Kaydan Buckingham (11 points) and Ava Capozzoli (10) led CHHS. Cayleigh Brown’s 15 points weren’t enough for #6 Wash High girls as the Little Prexies were upset at home by Aliquippa. The Quips got 16 points from Aunesty Johnson, 11 more from Angel Henry. Kaitlyn Nease paced the Burgettstown girls with 18 points on the way to a comfortable win over Winchester Thurston. Jill Frazier’s 16 points helped the Blue Devils to a 29-8 lead at the break. Sky Still and DaShae Cochran combined for all but three of Winchester Thurston’s points.
Trinity boys hung around with #2 Penn Hills, trailing by only four with just under seven minutes to play but couldn’t pull off the upset. Daemer Kelly hit all 13 of his free throws, part of his game-high 21 points to lead the Indians. Jonah Williamson and Jacob Dunkle each had 8 points for the Hillers. Brendan McCullough and Jack Dunbar combined for 30 points for the Peters Township boys as the #1 Indians went up big early and held Penn-Trafford at arms length the rest of the way. Tyler Freas score 18 for the Warriors. Avella boys trailed 21-6 after the first quarter and never recovered despite Westley Burchiant’s 22 points.

NEW YORK (AP) – Zach Parise scored the tiebreaker late in the third period and Brock Nelson added two goals as the New York Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4. Anders Lee had two goals and an assist, Ilya Sorokin finished with 40 saves and the Islanders snapped a three-game skid that included two overtime losses. Mathew Barzal added two assists. Rickard Rakell scored twice and Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist as the Penguins lost for the second time in three games. Casey DeSmith made 23 saves.
