ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Pierre-Olivier Joseph had two goals and an assist, and Evgeni Malkin had two assists to become the third player in franchise history to reach 1,200 career points as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Anaheim Ducks 6-3. Kasperi Kapanen and Bryan Rust each had a goal and an assist. Jeff Carter and Jake Guentzel also scored while Casey DeSmith stopped 28 shots. Malkin joined Mario Lemieux (1,723) and Sidney Crosby (1,472) as the only Penguins players to reach 1,200 points. Mason McTavish had a goal and an assist while Trevor Zegras and John Klingberg also scored for the Ducks, who had a five-game point streak snapped. John Gibson made a franchise-record 53 saves.

Burgettstown, Canon-McMillan and Waynesburg each won opening dual meets Thursday to advance to the PIAA quarterfinals. Burgettstown won seven bouts, including pins by Joey Baronick, Parker Sentipal and Dylan Slovick, to top District 2 champion Honesdale. The win is the first ever for the Blue Devils in the championship half of the brackets at the Giant Center. Canon-McMillan took nine wins with falls from Geno Calgaro, Tanner Mizenko and Luke Shaffer plus a forfeit to Matt Furman. Floyd Huff scored Waynesburg’s only pin, one of eight bout victories for the Raiders.

McGuffey rallied from six points down at the half to beat Charleroi to clinch a playoff spot. The Cougars also qualifed when South Park topped Yough. With tie-breakers applied, McGuffey takes third place. Waynesburg’s win over Brownsville clinched the outright section championship. On the boys side, Bentworth qualified with Chartiers-Houston’s win over Carmichaels.
Friday is the final night of the regular season with several playoff berths on the line. The Avella boys are tied with Western Beaver. Avella qualifies with a win at Union, or with a Western Beaver loss against Rochester. The Peters Township girls host Canon-McMillan. The Indians are the last bubble team and are in with a win, out with a loss. Peters Township’s boys team hosts Bethel Park with the outright section championship going to the winner. WJPA-FM (95.3) Listen Here! will carry both Peters Township games, starting at 5:50 pm.

PHOENIX (AP) — Six-time All-Pro offensive lineman Joe Thomas and lockdown cornerback Darrelle Revis were voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on their first try. Thomas and Revis join a new class of Hall of Famers that also includes return finalists DeMarcus Ware, Zach Thomas and Ronde Barber. Senior candidates Joe Klecko, Chuck Howley and Ken Riley, along with coaching candidate Don Coryell were also voted into the Hall and will be inducted in Canton, Ohio, this summer.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Patrick Mahomes says he’s “definitely in a better spot” when it comes to his ailing right ankle than he was for the AFC championship game. The All-Pro quarterback also says he doesn’t expect to be limited by it when he leads the Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Mahomes spoke before Wednesday’s practice at Arizona State’s facility. He said he’ll probably continue to get treatment on the ankle he hurt against Jacksonville in the divisional round throughout the week and possibly right up until kickoff.

PHOENIX (AP) – The Phoenix Suns acquired 13-time All-Star Kevin Durant from the Brooklyn Nets, according to multiple reports. The outlets, citing unnamed sources, said the Suns added Durant to a starting lineup that already includes an All-Star backcourt of Chris Paul and Devin Booker, along with center Deandre Ayton. Phoenix sent Cam Johnson, Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder, four first-round picks and additional draft compensation to the Nets. The Suns also receive forward T.J. Warren in the deal.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Kris Letang scored 3:36 into overtime to cap a frantic rally as the Pittsburgh Penguins stunned the Colorado Avalanche 2-1. The Avalanche controlled long stretches of regulation before Pittsburgh’s Bryan Rust tied it with 3:38 remaining in the third period forced overtime. Casey DeSmith made 41 saves for the Penguins, single-handedly keeping his team in it for the first two periods as Colorado dominated. Nathan MacKinnon scored his 14th goal of the season for the Avalanche. Pavel Francouz stopped 36 shots but couldn’t get a handle on a shot that became Letang’s fifth goal of the season.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Nike Sibande scored 15 points off the bench, nine Pittsburgh players entered the scoring column and the Panthers demolished Louisville 91-57 on Tuesday night and moved into a first-place tie with Clemson in the ACC. El Ellis made a pair of foul shots to bring Louisville into a 14-all tie with 13:36 before halftime. Pitt then went on a 16-2 run over nearly the next five minutes. A 47-27 halftime lead turned into a 58-28 margin just 1:59 into the second half. Mike James scored 11 points for Louisville.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – LeBron James broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA career scoring record in an arena filled with stars and rocked by eager fans anticipating a crowning moment in his 20-year career. James chased the 36 points necessary to surpass Abdul-Jabbar with determination, scoring 20 in the first half. The fans roared with every point while he inched toward the mark held since April 1984 by Abdul-Jabbar, who watched the game from a baseline seat near the Lakers’ bench. James’ mother, wife and three children also watched from courtside amid the thousands who rose in waves of anticipation nearly every time James touched the ball.
