Hockey Legend Guy LaFleur Dead At 70

MONTREAL (AP) – Hockey Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur, who helped the Montreal Canadiens win five Stanley Cup titles in the 1970s, has died at age 70. A cause of death was not immediately known, but Lafleur had been diagnosed with lung cancer. One of the greatest players of his generation, Lafleur registered 518 goals and 728 assists in 14 seasons with Montreal. Vogelbach’s HR Rallies Pirates Past Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) – Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run homer, Yoshi Tsutsugo had a two-run double and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the Chicago Cubs 4-3. The Pirates rebounded from a three-game sweep at Milwaukee with nine hits in the opener of a four-game series at Chicago. Pittsburgh starter Bryse Wilson allowed Rafael Ortega’s leadoff single in the first, then walked three straight batters. Jonathan Villar added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead, and Seiya Suzuki had an RBI groundout in the second for a 3-0 edge. Vogelbach homered in the third, and Tsutsugo’s double made it 4-3 Pirates in the fifth.

DeSmith 52 Saves, Guentzel Hat Trick, Pens Top Boston

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Casey DeSmith made a career-high 52 saves and Jake Guentzel scored three goals as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Boston Bruins 4-0. Guentzel completed the hat trick with an empty-netter, his 40th goal of the season. Pittsburgh moved two points ahead of Washington for third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Penguins, Bruins and Capitals have already secured playoff spots but are fighting for seeding in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh and Boston are knotted at 99 points apiece. Jason Zucker also scored for the Penguins. Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves for the Bruins, who have lost five of eight.

Despite Merger – NCAA Affirms Continuation Of Independent Athletic Programs

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – College sports’ governing body is giving its permission for six state-owned universities in Pennsylvania to continue to compete as separate entities despite merging into two umbrella institutions. The State System of Higher Education announced the decision Wednesday that pertains to sports in Division II at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield, California, Clarion and Edinboro universities. The NCAA has yet to rule on a small number of Division I teams the schools also field. California, Clarion and Edinboro merged last year into Pennsylvania Western University, or PennWest. The others are now Commonwealth University. The schools compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Brandon Woodruff pitched hitless ball into the sixth inning, Rowdy Tellez homered for the second straight day and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 for a three-game sweep. Woodruff gave up just one hit, a one-out single by former teammate Daniel Vogelbach in the sixth. After pitching five shutout innings in a win over St. Louis in his last outing, Woodruff struck out nine and walked two in six scoreless innings to beat the Pirates. Josh Hader earned his sixth save in six tries, finishing off Milwaukee’s fourth straight win. Tellez hit a solo homer and Keston Hiura later added a three-run drive.

Capitals Now Tied With Penguins In Metro

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Shea Theodore scored in overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights past the Washington Capitals 4-3 on Wednesday night. Theodore dangled his way through two defenders and deked his way to a backhand winner past Washington goaltender Ilya Samsonov, and in the process keeping their slim playoff hopes alive. Vegas has 89 points and is two back of Dallas for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference, and trails Los Angeles by three in the Pacific Division.

Jay Wright Resigns At Villanova

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Jay Wright shocked college basketball Wednesday night with his immediate resignation at Villanova, the Big East program he led to two national championships and four Final Fours in a Hall of Fame career. The 60-year-old Wright guided Villanova to titles in 2016 and 2018 and just led the Wildcats to the Final Four, where they lost to national champion Kansas. He went 520-197 in 21 seasons at the school and 642-282 overall, also coaching Hofstra from 1994-2001. Kyle Neptune, who served on the Villanova coaching staff before accepting the head coaching position at Fordham in 2021, returned to replace Wright. Wright will remain at Villanova and stay involved in fundraising, advising, education and more.

NHL; Rangers Record 3rd Straight Shutout

NEW YORK (AP) –  Ryan Strome scored twice, Adam Fox added a goal and Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves as the New York Rangers recorded a third-straight shutout and their 50th win of the season, 3-0 over the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night.  Eric Comrie made 31 saves for the Jets. Winnipeg trails the Dallas Stars by 10 points in the race for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Jets have five games remaining. The Rangers are tied with Carolina atop the Metropolitan Division.

 

Bruins Win In OT; Head To Pittsburgh

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Charlie McAvoy scored 48 seconds into overtime to lift the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. Jake DeBrusk and Taylor Hall also scored for Boston, which won its second straight after a season-high three-game losing streak. Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich scored for St. Louis, which had a nine-game winning streak snapped. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins. Ville Husso made 32 saves for St. Louis and had a six-game winning streak snapped. Boston will face the Penguins Thursday night at PPG Paints Arena.
