The PIAA Basketball playoffs end Saturday for Fort Cherry, falling to District 6 champion Portage. The Mustangs hit eight three-pointers in the first half, raced to a 24-point lead at intermission and the Rangers couldn’t recover. The Chartiers Valley girls sprinted away from D-6 champion Hollidaysburg over the final 12 minutes to reach the state quarterfinals for the fourth straight year. The Colts and Tigers were tied at 40 with four minutes to play in the third. Chartiers Valley rolled up 19 of the next 21 points and then cruised to the win. Click for PIAA brackets
All Saturday games at eastern PA sites were postponed, most to Sunday but some to Monday night due to the snow storm.

Charleston WV held California University women to six points total over the middle quarters and beat the Vulcans, 52-34, ending the Cal U season in the region semifinals. Meanwhile, the Cal U men’s team, led by five players in double figures, had no trouble with Fairmont State, rolling to a 95-74 win and a berth in the semifinals Sunday. The Vulcans will face West Virginia State, on overtime upset winner over West Liberty, the nation’s top-scoring team.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Jaden Ivey scored 17 points and Zach Edey had 15 to lead No. 9 Purdue past Penn State 69-61 in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The third-seeded Boilermakers will face seventh-seeded Michigan State in Saturday’s semifinals. Brandon Newman, who had been out of the rotation and hadn’t played since Feb. 10, added 12 points for the Boilermakers. Jalen Pickett scored 16 points and John Harrar had 15 points and 12 rebounds for No. 11 seed Penn State.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Mark Friedman’s first goal in 10 months early in the third period broke open a tie game and Bryan Rust’s 20th goal of the season provided some late cushion as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat Vegas 5-2. Mike Matheson, Jeff Carter and Evan Rodrigues also scored for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry stopped 39 shots as the Penguins moved past the New York Rangers and into second place in the Metropolitan Division. Jake Eichel and Alex Pietrangelo scored for Vegas. The Golden Knights have dropped three straight.

It’s Day Two of the State Wrestling Championships in Hershey where some gold medal hopes will be extended, some will be dashed. When the dust settles on the day, the pairings for the AA medal bouts will be set while AAA will be set for semifinals. We’ve got live, start-to-finish coverage on WJPA-AM (1450) or Listen Here! Following is a rundown of the Washington & Greene County wrestlers still active.
AA Quarterfinals Chris Vargo (Bentworth) and Parker Sentipal (Burgettstown) advanced to the semifinals. Tyler Berish (Beth-Center) lost his quarterfinal match but won his first consolation bout and will medal. Vitali Daniels (Bentworth) and Joey Sentipal (Burgettstown) lost quarterfinals and their first consolation bouts and were elminated.
AA Consolations Gaven Suica (Burgettstown) and Kyle McCollum (Beth-Center) won two consolation bouts and will medal. Wash High’s Cameron Carter-Green won a consolation bout, then lost in overtime in the 3rd round and was eliminated.
AAA Quarterfinals Jacob Houpt (Canon-McMillan) joins Waynesburg teammates Mac Church and Rocco Welsh in the AAA semifinals. The Big Macs’ Matthew Furman, Peters Township’s Darius McMillon and the Raiders’ Colton Stoneking lost quarterfinal matches and will wrestle in the 3rd round consolations. Cole Weightman (Belle Vernon), Mac Stout (Mt. Lebanon), Dylan Evans (Chartiers Valley), Ty Watters (West Allegheny) and Thomas Jefferson teammates Maddox Shaw and Brian Finnerty also advanced to Saturday’s semifinals.

The best Pennsylvania wrestlers have gathered at Hershey’s Giant Center for the PIAA Individual Championships this weekend. Washington & Greene Counties have 12 wrestlers starting in the AA field with 13 in the AAA brackets. WJPA-AM (1450) has live, start-to-finish coverage of all the action for both AA & AAA. AA Preliminaries are in the books. Bentworth (Chris Vargo, Vitali Daniels) & Burgettstown (Parker Sentipal, Joey Sentipal) have two wrestlers each into the quarterfinals along with Beth-Center’s Tyler Berish. Gaven Suica (Burgettstown), Kyle McCollum (Beth-Center) and Cameron Carter-Green (Wash High) are still alive in the consolations after Thursday’s action. Rudy Brown & Joey Baronick (Burgettstown), Bradeon Welsh (Ft. Cherry) and Chase Frameli (Jeff-Morgan) were eliminated.
AAA Preliminaries saw six of the 13 Washington/Greene qualifiers advance to the quarterfinals led by Waynesburg’s Mac Church, Colton Stoneking and Rocco Welsh. Joining the Raiders’ trio, Canon-McMillan’s Jacob Houpt & Matthew Furman and Darius McMillon, Peters Township. Two of the local contingent, Trinity’s Blake Reihner and Waynesburg Zander Phatorus, won pigtail bouts before losing in the first round and have advanced to 2nd Consolations Friday afternoon. Waynesburg’s Noah Tustin won his first round consolation bout while teammate Brody Evans lost twice and was eliminated. Canon-McMillan lost three wrestlers after a pair of losses: Tanner Mizenko, Brandon Dame and Gabriel Stafford.

Washington County sent a dozen teams into the WPIAL playoffs. Four of them reach the PIAA tournaments. After the opening rounds, ONE remains, the Fort Cherry boys. The Rangers (24-3) held off an upset-minded West Middlesex team to reach Saturday’s second round and a match up with District 6 champion Portage (27-1). The site and time for that Saturday game will be released early Thursday. Wash High boys were in a tight game until it slipped away midway through the fourth as the Little Prexies were eliminated by Chestnut Ridge, their first-ever state playoff win. Trinity girls led by seven with under 3 1/2 minutes to play but couldn’t make it stand, losing to District 3 titlist Gettysburg. Oddly enough, the two schools were set to play a PIAA quarterfinal game two years ago when games were paused, then cancelled by the COVID pandemic. NEW YORK (AP) – There will be a Major League Baseball season. Players have voted to accept management’s latest offer for a new labor deal, paving the way to end a 99-day lockout and salvage a 162-game regular season. Owners were unanimous in their approval of the package, which still needs ratification by all players. MLB sent the players an offer Thursday and gave them until 3 p.m. to accept in order to play a full season. The agreement calls for the luxury tax threshold to rise from $210 million last year to $230 million this season and gradually to $242 million in 2026. The minimum salary will increase from $570,500 to about $700,000 this year, with $20,000 annual increases. A new $50 million bonus pool was established for players not yet eligible for arbitration, a way to boost salaries for young stars. The agreement will allow training camps to open this week in Florida and Arizona, more than three weeks after they were scheduled to on Feb. 16. Opening day is being planned for April 7, a little more than a week behind the original date on March 31.
