NHL Suspends Agreement With Russia-Based KHL

March 8, 2022 3:50 am

UNDATED (AP) – The NHL has suspended its dealings with the Russia-based KHL. The NHL told its teams to cease contact with KHL counterparts and Russia-based agents as part of the suspension of the memorandum of understanding between the leagues. The move could make it more difficult for NHL teams to sign players from the KHL. They can continue to communicate with North American agents certified by the NHL Players’ Association.  It’s the league’s latest move to sever ties with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

MLB Reacts Angrily To Locked-Out Players

March 7, 2022 3:52 am

NEW YORK (AP) – Major League Baseball reacted angrily to the latest offer by locked-out players when bargaining to end the lockout resumed Sunday.  Management accused the union of backtracking and showing no sign of a breakthrough to get the derailed season back on track.  The squabbling sides talked for 95 minutes on the 95th day of the lockout, largely restating their positions.  The sides remain far apart on the luxury tax, minimum salaries and the proposed bonus pool for pre-arbitration eligible players. The union lowered its starting point for the bonus pool by $5 million to $80 million.

Notre Dame Tops Pitt In Regular Season Finale

March 6, 2022 1:20 am

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Nate Laszewski had 17 points and nine rebounds, Cormac Ryan added 15 points, all on 3-pointers, and Notre Dame rolled past Pittsburgh 78-54 on Saturday. With the win, the Fighting Irish take the No. 2 seed in the ACC tournament, marking their best seeding since the 2011-12 season in the Big East. Their 15-5 ACC record (22-9 overall) is a program-best for conference wins in a season. This is their fourth top-four finish in nine seasons in the ACC. Ryan made three 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the second half as Notre Dame opened up a 49-27 lead. The Fighting Irish made 6 of their first 7 3-pointers and 9 of their first 12 shots overall after halftime. By contrast, Pittsburgh made 1 of 13 3-pointers and shot 29.4% overall in the first half. Laszewski led the Fighting Irish with 10 points and six rebounds in the half and Notre Dame led 31-21 going into the break. Mouhamadou Gueye had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers (11-20, 6-14). John Hugley also scored 13 points. The Panthers finished in a three-way tie for 11th place. The Fighting Irish made 14 of 24 3-pointers. Pitt made 3 of 26 from distance.

WVU Snaps 7-Game Losing Streak

March 6, 2022 1:21 am

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Taz Sherman scored 21 points and West Virginia’s veterans came through to beat TCU 70-64 on the Mountaineers’ senior day to snap a seven-game losing streak Saturday. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said his frustrations over watching his team make the same mistakes boiled over Thursday while studying film with his players. He pulled his freshmen out of the session and let them go practice their shots. The veterans had to stay in the room and figure it out for themselves. Huggins was hoping his older players — some playing in their final home game — would double their efforts to finish the regular season strong. Sherman was 9-of 17-shooting with three 3-pointers and another fifth-year player, Malik Curry, added 10 points for the Mountaineers (15-16, 4-14 Big 12). Senior Sean McNeil scored 10 points, including the clinching free throws, as did sophomore Jalen Bridges.

Duke Falls In Coach K’s Final Home Game

March 6, 2022 1:18 am

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina ignored all the attention surrounding the final home game for retiring Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, as well as the fourth-ranked Duke’s emotionally charged, rowdier-than-usual crowd. Instead, the rival Tar Heels walked into Cameron Indoor Stadium and fearlessly spoiled Coach K’s perfect send-off to the postseason. Armando Bacot scored 23 points and the Tar Heels shot 59% after halftime to upset the Blue Devils 94-81 on Saturday night, a major reversal from a blowout loss in the first meeting that raised questions about UNC’s ability to compete against the nation’s top teams. First-year coach Hubert Davis had shrugged off the “pageantry” from Krzyzewski’s final home game, saying the team needed to tune out all the extra emotion and do one thing: compete.
