Wash-Jeff Tops Hobart in ECAC Bowl

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson rolled up 28 second quarter points enroute to a 35-18 victory over visiting Hobart College in the 2022 ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl played at Cameron Stadium Saturday afternoon. Quarterback Jake Pugh hit 13-of-24 for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman John Peduzzi caught a pair of scoring passes in his 102-yard receiving afternoon.  Anthony Rosati also had a touchdown catch for the Presidents. Sophomore running back Zach Cernuto ran nine time for 73 yards and a pair of touchdowns including a 32-yard scamper that put the Presidents up 21-6 early in the second quarter. All of W&J’s points came in the first half. The Red & Black led 35-12.

Anthony Romano returned an interception 27 yards for the Statesmen late in the first quarter. Following Peduzzi’s second touchdown, Rayshawn Boswell returned the kickoff 94 yards, the first kickoff return of the season for either team. Hobart’s only offensive score came with less than seven minutes to play, a reverse option pass from reserve wide out Benjamin Farrell to quarterback David Krewson.

The victory is the third all-time against Hobart and allows the Presidents to finish the season at 9-2 overall. W&J has won at least eight games in each of the past 10 full seasons. The Presidents have now posted 39 consecutive winning seasons. Hobart, who had won bowl games in 2019 and 2021, finishes the season at 7-4 overall.

Pitt Holds Off Duke At Home

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Israel Abanikanda ran for 113 yards and a touchdown as Pittsburgh edged Duke 28-26. The Panthers (7-4, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Blue Devils (7-4, 4-3) for the eighth time in nine meetings despite nearly squandering a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. Duke’s Riley Leonard threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns, including a 19-yard fourth-down strike to Jaylen Coleman with 47 seconds to go that pulled the Blue Devils within two. Duke’s two-point conversion attempt failed as the Blue Devils saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Penn State Beats Rutgers For 16th Straight Time

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Sean Clifford ran for a touchdown and threw for another and No. 11 Penn State scored twice on fumble returns and once on a kickoff return in beating Rutgers 55-10 Saturday. Freshman Nick Singleton scored on a 100-yard kickoff return, Kobe King gave Penn State (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) the lead for good with a 14-yard fumble return and Ji’Ayir Brown rambled 70 yards with another fumble as the Nittany Lions blew it open in the second half. Clifford threw a 10-yard TD pass to Tyler Warren and scored on a 14-yard run as the Nittany Lions beat Rutgers (4-7, 1-7) for the 16th straight time.

Jarry And The Penguins Shut Down Jets

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Tristan Jarry stopped all 32 shots he faced for his 12th career shutout, and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-0. Bryan Rust had a goal and an assist, Jason Zucker and Jake Guentzel also scored, and Sidney Crosby had two assists for Pittsburgh. The Penguins won for the third time in five games (3-1-1) after losing seven straight (0-6-1). Connor Hellebuyck stopped 31 shots for Winnipeg, which lost for the third time in 11 games (8-2-1).

Bills’ McDermott Keeps Things light Amid Heavy Snow Fall

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Bills coach Sean McDermott is trying to keep things light as a major snowstorm hits Buffalo and disrupts the team’s schedule. He says the lake-effect storm that’s already dumped more than a foot of snow in some places can be a bonding experience for his team. The Bills are preparing to dig themselves out and travel on Saturday to Detroit. That’s where they will be the “home” team for a game against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Buffalo is 6-3 and coming off two consecutive losses.

Lamar Jackson Misses Practice, But Harbaugh Says He’ll Play

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) – Lamar Jackson missed practice because of an illness, but Baltimore coach John Harbaugh says the Ravens’ star quarterback will be fine for Sunday’s game against Carolina. Jackson has yet to miss a game this season. The Ravens listed him as questionable for Sunday on their injury report. Baltimore did not rule anyone out on that injury report. Tight end Mark Andrews and running back Gus Edwards are questionable as well. Andrews was a full participant at Friday’s practice. Cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis is doubtful after missing two straight practices.

Virginia Basketball Back On Court, Honors Shooting Victims

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Virginia’s basketball players wore sweatshirts in warmups for Friday’s game against Baylor that honored three Cavaliers football players who were fatally shot nearly a week ago. The names of those players were on the backs of the shirts, and their jersey numbers and the words “UVA Strong” were on the front. The game in the Continental Tire Main Event in Las Vegas was Virginia’s first basketball game since the campus shooting Sunday in which the three football players were killed. The Cavaliers canceled Monday’s home game against Northern Iowa. No. 16 Virginia beat No. 5 Baylor 86-79.

World Cup Fans Ready To Celebrate Despite Stadium Beer Ban

DOHA, Qatar (AP) – Fans are pouring into Qatar to watch and be part of the first World Cup in the Middle East. A last-minute decision to not serve beer with alcohol at stadiums was largely welcomed by the country’s conservative Muslims and shrugged off by giddy fans. Meanwhile, the country’s vast Asian labor force also enjoyed the celebrations as the end of the tournament likely will see an economic slowdown. Qatar has faced criticism over its treatment of laborers, though Doha has made changes to its employment laws.

Crosby Scores Twice As Penguins Beat Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Sidney Crosby had two goals and two assists for a season-high four points and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Minnesota Wild 6-4 on Thursday night. Ryan Poehling, Kris Letang, Brock McGinn and Jake Guentzel also scored for the Penguins and Tristan Jarry stopped 19 shots. Pittsburgh is 3-1-1 after losing seven straight. Joel Eriksson Ek scored twice and Brandon Duhaime and Matt Dumba added goals for the Wild. Filip Gustavsson, filling in for the injured Marc-Andre Fleury, made 26 saves.

Tannehill Leads Titans Over Packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Ryan Tannehill threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns to outduel Aaron Rodgers as the Tennessee Titans defeated the Green Bay Packers 27-17. Tannehill looked much sharper in his second game back after missing two games with an injured right ankle. He went 22 of 27 and had one interception as the Titans won for the seventh time in eight games. Rodgers went 24 of 39 for 227 yards with two touchdown passes to rookie Christian Watson. Green Bay has lost six of seven.
