PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett left the game against Tampa Bay after entering the league’s concussion protocol. Pickett’s head appeared to hit the turf after being legally pushed to the ground by Tampa Bay linebacker Devin White just after releasing a pass in the third quarter. Pickett lay on the Acrisure Stadium turf for several seconds before getting up on his own. Pickett was replaced by Mitch Trubisky, who lost his starting job to Pickett at halftime of a loss to the New York Jets on Oct. 2.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Gerrit Cole gave New York what it needed, seven solid innings and Harrison Bader hit a two-run homer as the Yankees saved their season and forced a decisive fifth game in the AL Division Series with a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians. New York’s $324 million man, Cole allowed two runs and struck out eight in beating the Guardians for the second time in six days. Bader homered for the third time in the best-of-five series, connecting in the second inning off Cal Quantrill. After blowing Game 3, the Yankees’ bullpen followed Cole with two scoreless innings. In Game 5 on Monday night, New York will start Game 2 loser Jameson Taillon at Yankee Stadium against Aaron Civale. The winner meets Houston in the ALCS.

#20 Carnegie-Mellon held Washington & Jefferson to 55 yards offense after intermission and rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit to beat the Presidents, 12-7. W&J had rolled up 225 yards in the first half but managed only one score, that a 41-yard Jake Pugh-to-Keaton Hall fourth-down conversion. Three times earlier in the half, W&J had the ball inside the Tartans’ 35 yard line including first downs at the Tartans’ 14, 34 and 25 yard lines on consecutive possessions but came away empty. W&J’s defense played well enough to win, holding CMU’s offense to a pair of Cole Hanna field goals. The winning points came midway through the fourth quarter when Colton Jones threw a Pick Six for the second straight week, intercepted by Logan Young and returned 42 yards for the winners’ only touchdown of the game. Including sacks, W&J had -21 yards rushing in the second half and just 76 yards passing, 25 of those yards on a final desperation possession. The loss drops W&J to 3-2 in the PAC and almost certainly out of the race for the conference title and NCAA playoff bid. The win is Carnegie-Mellon’s first in Washington since 1982.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Donovan Edwards ran for a go-ahead, 67-yard touchdown and Blake Corum had a 61-yard run for a score on consecutive snaps in the third quarter as No. 5 Michigan pulled away and beat No. 10 Penn State 41-17. The Wolverines finished with 418 yards rushing against a team that was giving up fewer than 80 yards rushing a game to rank among college football’s leaders. Michigan was dominant for much of the first half but led by just two points because it settled for field goals after stalling at the 5 twice and at the 11 once.

According to a report in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Avella has forfeited its football game Friday against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart because injuries have taken the team down to 12 players. Avella is the smallest school in WPIAL football and started the season with only 20 players on its roster. Avella coach Ryan Cecchini said he and school administrators decided to forfeit because of safety reasons for the players. “We beat Carlynton two weeks ago and took some lumps, but we really got beat up pretty good last week against Fort Cherry,” Cecchini said. “It became apparent Monday that we might not be able to suit up for this game. We decided to wait until Wednesday, and it got worse by then. At that point, it became a safety issue. OLSH has been great about this situation, but you can’t really play a game with 12 or 13 players. The 12 or 13 we have aren’t fully healthy, either. And a lot of the problem is that we have only three seniors and two juniors on the rosters. We would have to play a lot of young kids who haven’t been through the grind of games.”
