Lanny Frattare was enshrined onto the Pittsburgh Pirates Media Wall of Fame Wednesday afternoon, the 11th member of the Pittsburgh media to be so honored. Frattare broadcast Pirates Baseball from 1976 through 2008, calling more games as the team’s play-by-play voice than any other announcer in the 100+ year history of the franchise. During the luncheon, hosted by Pirates owner Bob Nutting, team president Travis Williams and emceed by current broadcaster Greg Brown, Frattare paid tribute to Bob Prince, thanked his family, former manager Jim Leyland and his broadcast partners, many of whom attended the celebration. Since leaving the Pirates, Frattare has been an associate professor at Waynesburg University and has announced the PONY League World Series games for the past 10 years on WJPA. PITTSBURGH (AP) — New Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he’s happy to be playing football this weekend. The fact that it’s against the New York Jets just happens to be a coincidence. Rodgers signed with the Steelers in June and is excited about the new chapter. The 41-year-old hasn’t played since leading the Jets to a win over Miami in January to end the regular season. Rodgers is confident in Pittsburgh’s revamped offense, which includes new additions such as DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith. He praises the team’s tight ends as the best he’s worked with.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tommy Pham and Jared Triolo each drove in two runs, and the Pirates spoiled a big night by Shohei Ohtani to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-7. Ohtani hit his 100th home run with the Los Angeles Dodgers and had a pair of doubles. Ohtani hit a solo shot off top prospect Bubba Chandler (2-0) for his 46th homer this season. Playing his 294th game with the Dodgers, he became the fastest to reach 100 home runs in team history ahead of Gary Sheffield (399). Henry Davis put the Pirates ahead on an RBI single off Edgardo Henriquez (0-1) in the sixth and Jared Triolo added on with a two-out, two-run double.

Ohio State is back at No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll ahead of No. 2 Penn State and No. 3 LSU, which was joined this week by No. 5 Miami in the top five. Florida State is back in the poll for the first time in a year at No. 14 and Alabama plummeted to its lowest ranking in 17 seasons at No. 21. The defending national champion Buckeyes received 55 of 66 first-place votes. They are No. 1 in a regular-season poll for the first time since 2015. Preseason No. 1 Texas dropped to seventh.

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic has reached his record-tying 14th U.S. Open semifinal and record-extending 53rd semi at all Grand Slam tournaments with a 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Taylor Fritz. Djokovic’s victory on Tuesday night improved his head-to-head record against Fritz to 11-0. It also moved the 24-time major champion into a showdown against Carlos Alcaraz in Friday’s semifinals. Djokovic has won four titles at Flushing Meadows. The No. 4-seeded Fritz was the runner-up at the U.S. Open a year ago. He was the last American man in this year’s bracket and his exit means the country’s drought without a male singles champion at a major will continue.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Running back Jaylen Warren has signed a three-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers, solidifying his status as a key player. Warren joined the team in 2022 as an undrafted rookie. He has risen from a practice squad hopeful to the first string after the Steelers let former first-round pick Najee Harris leave in free agency. Warren has impressed with his physicality and versatility, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He remains motivated, acknowledging doubters but focusing on his role. Warren’s journey from junior college to the NFL serves as an inspiration to others.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The first-place Milwaukee Brewers finished a grueling stretch of 19 games in 18 days by dealing with one more potential loss to their injury-riddled bullpen. Shelby Miller left with an injury in the eighth inning of the Brewers’ 10-8 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after the game that Miller “felt something pop in his elbow.” The Brewers already have All-Star closer Trevor Megill and relievers DL Hall and Grant Anderson on the injured list.

NEW YORK (AP) — Naomi Osaka has eliminated Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 at the U.S. Open to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in more than 4 1/2 years. The No. 23-seeded Osaka played far more consistent and confident tennis than No. 3 Gauff in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday. Osaka will meet No. 11 Karolina Muchova on Wednesday for a semifinal berth. Osaka is a 27-year-old who was born in Japan and moved to the U.S. with her family at age 3. She has won four major championships, all on hard courts. That includes titles at the U.S. Open in 2018 and 2020. Gauff’s two Slam trophies came at Flushing Meadows in 2023 and the French Open this June.

BOSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran hit an inside-the-park homer at Fenway Park, a three-run shot that gave the Boston Red Sox a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With runners at the corners and two outs, Duran lined the first pitch from starter Mitch Keller into the right-center gap. The ball got past right fielder Alexander Canario, who tried to cut it off, and rolled into the Fenway triangle. Then it caromed off the side wall of Boston’s bullpen and briefly got past center fielder Oneil Cruz. As the crowd roared, the speedy Duran raced around third base and easily beat a relay throw to the plate standing up.
