Pens Head Coach Out With COVID

November 4, 2021 4:36 pm

(WPXI) – Another major part of the Pittsburgh Penguins won’t be available for Thursday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers: head coach Mike Sullivan. The Penguins coach won’t be on the bench due to COVID-19 protocols. Assistant coach Todd Reirden will assume coaching duties. Sullivan is just the latest domino to fall for the team due to the virus. The team will be without Sidney Crosby, Brian Dumoulin, Kris Letang, Chad Ruhwedel and Marcus Pettersson. Crosby had only played one game so far this season after returning from injury.

November 4, 2021 2:38 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed star center Sidney Crosby and defenseman Brian Dumoulin in the COVID-19 protocol after both tested positive. Coach Mike Sullivan says Crosby is dealing with mild symptoms while Dumoulin remains asymptomatic. They are the seventh and eighth members of the Penguins to test positive for COVID-19 since training camp opened in September. Pittsburgh is off to a 3-3-2 start and is currently tied for last in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division.

Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Tests Positive For COVID

November 4, 2021 2:36 am

UNDATED (AP) – Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol and will miss Sunday’s game at Kansas City.  Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Wednesday that Rodgers is in the protocol but would not say if he had tested positive. LaFleur said 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love is the starter against the Chiefs. Love has thrown just seven NFL passes. The reigning NFL MVP is the latest Green Bay player to deal with the coronavirus. Wide receivers Davante Adams, a 2020 All-Pro, and Allen Lazard missed last week’s victory at Arizona because of COVID-19 protocols.  With Rodgers out and third-stringer Kurt Benkert on the COVID-19 list, the Packers have signed QB Blake Bortles to the practice squad.

Phillies Buyout Club Option For Andrew McCutchen

November 4, 2021 3:43 am

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The Philadelphia Phillies declined club options for next season on outfielders Odúbel Herrera and Andrew McCutchen. Herrera gets a $2.5 million buyout rather than a $11.5 million salary, completing a $30.5 million, five-year contract. He is eligible for salary arbitration. McCutchen, signed as a free agent to a $50 million, three-year contract in December 2018, gets a $3 million buyout instead of a $15 million salary. He hit .237 with 47 homers and 143 RBIs in three seasons in Philadelphia. He will become a free agent. Herrera hit .274 in six seasons with the Phillies.

Posey To Announce Retirement

November 4, 2021 3:48 am

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey plans to announce his retirement Thursday. That’s according to a person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Posey had yet to make his decision public.  The 34-year-old Posey just helped the Giants win a team-record 107 games this past season, batting .304 with 18 homers and 56 RBIs. The Giants said last month that they would exercise Posey’s $22 million club option for the 2022 season as long as the veteran catcher wanted to keep playing after a stellar year. He is three years removed from major hip surgery.

Browns Excuse Odell Beckham Jr. From Practice

November 4, 2021 3:45 am

Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was excused from practice a day after his father caused a stir by sharing a video of quarterback Baker Mayfield not throwing passes to his son. Beckham may be down to his final hours with the Browns, who met with the star’s representatives to work out a resolution. The team is now deciding whether to cut ties with the polarizing wide receiver or see if he and Mayfield can move forward together.

Braves Are World Champs!

November 3, 2021 3:49 am

HOUSTON (AP) – The Atlanta Braves have won their first World Series championship since 1995, hammering the Houston Astros 7-0 in Game 6. Jorge Soler hit his third home run of the Series, and Freddie Freeman and Dansby Swanson also connected.  Max Fried got stomped on in the first inning, then delivered the best start of the entire World Series for the champion Braves. Fried got 18 outs against the 19 batters faced after his right ankle got stepped on by Michael Brantley’s rubber cleat in the first inning. Fried became the first pitcher in this World Series to complete six innings. Steadied by 66-year-old manager Brian Snitker, an organization man for four decades, the underdog Braves won the franchise’s fourth title.  Freeman hit an RBI double and then punctuated the romp with a solo home run in the seventh that made it 7-0.  By then, it was a total team effort. Ailing star Ronald Acuna Jr., the dynamo of Atlanta’s future, bounded from the dugout to join the celebration for Freeman, the longtime face of the franchise.  Consider it a tribute to the greatest Braves player of them all, Mr. Hank Aaron. The Hall of Fame slugger died Jan. 22 at 86, still rooting for his old team, and his legacy was stamped all over this Series.  The loss denied 72-year-old Astros manager Dusty Baker the crown.  Jorge Soler was a bit player during the Chicago Cubs’ drought-smashing victory over Cleveland five years ago, but, now he’s been voted MVP of Atlanta Braves’ six-game World Series win over over the Houston Astros.  Soler hit .316 with three home runs and six RBIs. He became the first batter to lead off a World Series with a home run, hit a go-ahead, seventh-inning drive in Game 4 and put the Braves ahead in Game 6 with a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the third against Luis Garcia.
