W&J Defense Holds for Road Win

October 31, 2021 1:19 am

#24 Washington & Jefferson offense and special teams built a 28-14 lead in the first half at Grove City.  After the break, the defense held Grove City at bay enough to allow the Presidents to get the 28-24 win, maintaining a share of the conference lead with two games left to play.  Sophomore quarterback Colton Jones, making his first collegiate start, led the Presidents on three seven-play scoring drives in the game’s first 16 minutes, Midway through the second quarter, Justin Huss returned a kickoff 90 yards to build a two touchdown lead. After spending 20 of the first 30 minutes on the field, a tired defense made enough plays to get the win.  Drew Ehrlich finally sealed the win with his second interception of the half. The Wolverines had a pair of 15-play possessions that yield no points, one on a missed field goal and the other on downs.  Jones finished the day 24-of-36 for 225 yards, one interception and one touchdown. Andreas Johnsson scored twice for New Jersey, including an empty-net goal with 1:43 left. Jimmy Vesey had a short-handed goal. Danton Heinen scored his fourth and Brock McGinn his second for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have been outscored 13-3 in three straight losses after starting the season on a five-game points streak. Braves One Win Away From World Series Title

October 31, 2021 7:54 am

ATLANTA (AP) — This Atlanta Braves team couldn’t have picked a more fitting way to move to the brink of a World Series championship. A pitcher who spent most of the year in the minors kept ’em in it. A slugger who came in a flurry of trades won it for ’em. If this gritty bunch can do it one more time, the Braves will have their first Series title in 26 years. Dansby Swanson and pinch-hitter Jorge Soler connected for back-to-back homers in the seventh inning Saturday night, propelling the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros and a commanding 3-1 Series lead. Game 5 is Sunday night. The Braves can wrap up the championship on their home field, just as they did two stadiums ago when they beat the Cleveland Indians in 1995. They’ve sure been tough at home, improving to 7-0 this postseason.

Braves Pull Ahead Of Astros With Shutout Win In Game 3

October 30, 2021 3:58 am

ATLANTA (AP) – The Atlanta Braves spent much of Friday night flirting on a no-hitter. Instead, they had to settle for a 2-0 victory over the Houston Astros and a two-games-to-one lead in the World Series.  Ian Anderson worked five hitless innings but was pulled after 76 pitches. He struck out four, walked three and allowed just one base runner after the first inning.  Atlanta’s bullpen kept the no-hitter intact until pinch-hitter Aledmys (ah-LEHD’-mees) Diaz blooped a single leading off the eighth against reliever Tyler Matzek. Houston’s other hit came on Alex Bregman’s single leading off the ninth.  Austin Riley’s RBI double in the third off Astros rookie starter Luis Garcia put Atlanta ahead. Travis d’Arnaud  hit a 437-foot homer off Kendall Graveman in the eighth, his second round-tripper of the series.  The Braves improved to 6-0 at home this postseason.  Game 4 is Saturday in Atlanta.

Mayfield In For Browns Against Steelers

October 30, 2021 4:01 am

(AP) – Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will start Sunday against Pittsburgh, returning after missing one game with an injured left shoulder that will need management for the rest of this season.  Mayfield has participated in the team’s last three practices and has been cleared by team doctors and a second medical group.  He sat out last Sunday’s win over the Broncos, allowing him to improve his range of motion and reduce inflammation.  The Browns host the Steelers Sunday in Cleveland.  That game can be heard here on WJPA AM 1450 with pregame starting at noon.
