Browns Fall To Eagles

October 14, 2024 4:45 am

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Deshaun Watson’s $230 million contract is guaranteed. Seemingly, so is his job. Watson failed to lead Cleveland to an offensive touchdown, failed to lead Cleveland to its first 20-point game, and failed to lead Cleveland to even a glint of hope it can turn around its season. But coach Kevin Stefanski said after the Browns lost 20-16 to the Philadelphia Eagles that Watson will remain the starting quarterback. Watson finished 16 of 23 for 168 yards and blew a chance at a tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter. He has yet to throw for more than 200 yards in a game this season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jack Flaherty combined on a three-hitter and Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers tied the postseason record of 33 consecutive scoreless innings by routing the New York Mets 9-0 Sunday night in the NL Championship Series opener. Los Angeles knocked out a wild Kodai Senga in the second inning, built a six-run lead by the fourth and matched the scoreless record set by the Baltimore Orioles over the first four games of the 1966 World Series against the Dodgers. Backed by chants of “MVP! MVP!,” Shohei Ohtani was 2 for 4 with a walk while scoring two runs and driving in another.

Pitt Holds Off Cal Bears

October 13, 2024 8:19 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi spent part of the week grousing about his defense, the one that had served as more bystander than difference-maker during the Panthers’ unbeaten start.  His players were listening.  No. 22 Pitt regained some of the swagger that’s been its trademark for most of Narduzzi’s decade-long tenure, racking up six sacks to cover for a suddenly sputtering offense in a 17-15 win over California on Saturday that pushed the Panthers to 6-0 for the first time in 42 years.  “Some games (the offense) carried us,” said Pitt defensive end Jimmy Scott, who had a career-high three sacks. “This game we kind of carried them a little bit.”  Pitt managed just 277 total yards — nearly 250 below its season average coming in — and did next to nothing in the second half, relying on two first-half touchdown runs by Desmond Reid and a 58-yard field goal from Ben Sauls to take an eight-point halftime lead before holding on.  Pitt, meanwhile, picked to finish in the bottom half of the conference in the preseason, is now 2-0 in the ACC and firmly believes its best days are still

Fields Gets Start Over Healthy Wilson

October 13, 2024 7:07 am

Russell Wilson is healthy, but Justin Fields will remain the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback – for now. Head coach Mike Tomlin announced Fields will continue to be the starting quarterback following Friday’s practice. This week, with Wilson fully healthy, he will dress as the team’s backup, instead of being the emergency third quarterback, as he has been the first five weeks of the season. But Tomlin gave himself and Wilson and out, citing rust after the veteran quarterback missed five weeks of practice with his second calf injury of the 2024 season.

Yamamoto allowed two hits in five innings for the Dodgers before being pulled after 63 pitches in a decisive Game 5 between the heated rivals. The Dodgers will play the New York Mets in the best-of-seven NLCS starting Sunday in Los Angeles. Darvish gave up two runs and three hits in 6 2/3 innings for the Padres. MLB Spring Facilities Spared In Storm

October 12, 2024 3:49 am

(AP) Major League Baseball spring training facilities on Florida’s west coast appear to have been mostly spared major damage during Hurricane Milton. Unlike two years ago when Hurricane Ian caused extensive damage that shut down the Tampa Bay Rays’ spring home in Port Charlotte, no teams have reported Milton causing serious issues that might impact operations this winter. The Rays continue to assess the situation at their training complex and stadium, as well as at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, where Milton shredded the roof of the domed stadium that’s been their regular-season home since the franchise’s inception in 1998. Several other teams are assessing situations at their spring training complexes.
