Pirates Pick Up Another Win Against Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Michael Chavis and Tucupita Marcano each hit two-run homers and the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 to take their second straight series from the NL West leaders. The Pirates won four of five games against the Dodgers in May and conclude their LA visit on Wednesday. The Dodgers dropped just their fifth series of the season after wasting several chances. They failed to capitalize on seven walks and a hit batter. Trea Turner blasted a two-run homer to extend his hitting streak to 23 straight games, tops in the majors this season.

NHL; Avalanche Take Opener Against Oilers

DENVER (AP) – J.T. Compher scored twice, Cale Makar had a goal and two assists and the Colorado Avalanche held off the Edmonton Oilers 8-6 in Game 1 of the Western Conference final.
The Avalanche’s eight goals were tied for the most in a playoff game in franchise history. Both teams needed to use backup goaltenders. Edmonton’s Mike Smith was pulled after giving up six goals and Darcy Kuemper left with an upper-body injury. Twelve Avs recorded at least a point and six had multi-point games.

Pirates Rally In 9th To Beat Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Michael Perez hit a tying single in the ninth inning and pinch-runner Michael Chavis scored the go-ahead run on first baseman Freddie Freeman’s error to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a wild 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The loss snapped the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak. The Pirates have won three of four against the Dodgers this month. Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton earned his 100th career victory.

Rangers Take Game 7; Advance To Conference Finals

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The New York Rangers couldn’t have picked a better time to finally beat the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh. The Rangers are in the Eastern Conference finals after taking Game 7 of their second-round series with the Hurricanes, 6-2.  Chris Kreider scored twice and Igor Shesterkin stopped 36 shots to help the Rangers become the only road team to win a game in the series. Kreider and Adam Fox provided power-play goals to put the Blueshirts ahead, 2-0 eight minutes into the game. Ryan Strome, Filip Chytil and Andrew Copp also tallied for the Rangers, who will face the Lightning in the next round. Mika Zibanejad set up three goals.  Tony DeAngelo and Max Domi had third-period goals for the Hurricanes, who finished the game without goaltender Antti Raanta and forward Seth Jarvis because of injuries.  The Rangers host the Lightning in Game 1 of the conference finals on Wednesday.

Women’s College World Series Set

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma is back to try to defend its national championship at the Women’s College World Series. The top-seeded Sooners will face Northwestern in their World Series opener Thursday in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma has won four of the past eight national titles under coach Patty Gasso. Unseeded Texas faces #5 UCLA in the first game of this year’s tournament. #14 Florida, runner-up to Oklahoma a year ago, takes on Oregon State Thursday evening, followed by #7 Oklahoma State and Arizona. Pirates Add Chang, Designate Tucker For Assignment

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielder Yu Chang from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for cash considerations Monday.  The 26-year-old Chang played in four games with the Guardians this season before being designated for assignment on May 26. He also played in a combined eight games on a rehab assignment between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus while he was on the 10-day injured list from April 15 to May 13. Last year Chang hit .228 (54-for-237) with 14 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 39 RBI in a total of 89 games with Cleveland. He also hit .280 (37-for-132) with eight doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 25 RBI and an .867 OPS in his final 41 games from July 1 through the end of the season. During that time, Chang’s .867 OPS ranked second on the Indians behind Jose Ramirez (.902).To make room for Chang on the 40-man roster, infielder Cole Tucker has been designated for assignment. The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 26-man active roster when Chang joins the team. Chang will wear uniform #6.

Padres Beat Pirates In Extra Innings

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Trent Grisham hit a two-run walkoff home run in the 10th inning and the San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 to take two of three. Grisham drove a 2-0 pitch from Chris Stratton off the right-field foul pole to bring in automatic runner Jorge Alfaro. It was the second career walkoff homer by Grisham and fourth walkoff win by the Padres this year. Luis Garcia got the win.

Ganassi Earns Another Indy 500 Crown

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Marcus Ericsson and Chip Ganassi were kings of the Brickyard on Sunday. Ericsson became the second Swede to win the Indianapolis 500, giving Ganassi Racing its fifth victory in the race. Ericsson took control of the race late and had it under control until a crash by teammate Jimmie Johnson with four laps remaining brought out a rare red-flag stoppage at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Burns Sinks 38-Foot Putt To Win Schwab Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Sam Burns won the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial with a 38-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, beating top-ranked Scott Scheffler. Burns closed with a 5-under 65 to get to minus-9, then waited two hours in the clubhouse for the leaders to complete their rounds. Scheffler needed three clutch putts for a 72 just to get into the playoff matching 25-year-old standouts and close friends.

Major Names Advance In French Open

PARIS (AP) – Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will square off in the French Open quarterfinals after winning on Sunday. Alexander Zverev also reached the quarters and will take on Carlos Alcaraz. Americans Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens advanced to the women’s quarters, as did U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez and Martina Trevisan.
