Pirates Beat The Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a three-run homer off closer Taylor Rogers with one out in the ninth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Diego Padres 4-2. It was the first time the Padres lost in Joe Musgrove’s nine starts this season. The big right-hander from suburban El Cajon pitched six strong innings against his former team. It was Rogers’ second blown save in 19 chances. He struggled right away, allowing Michael Perez’s double and walking Tucupita Marcano. Rogers struck out Cal Mitchell but then allowed Hayes’ homer to center field, his first of the season.

New York Rangers Force Game 7

NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Rangers are now 4-0 in potential elimination games this postseason.  Filip Chytil (HEE’-tul) scored twice and the Rangers forced a Game 7 in their Stanley Cup second-round series by downing the Hurricanes, 5-2.  Tyler Motte (MAHT’) and Mika Zibanejad (MEE’-kah zih-BAN’-eh-jad) tallied 2 1/2 minutes apart to put the Rangers ahead, 2-0 midway through the first period. Chytil added a pair of second-period goals to put the Blueshirts back in control.  Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin (ahr-TEH’-mee pah-NA’-rihn) had power-play goals to support Igor Shesterkin who finished with 37 saves.  Canes goaltender Antti Raanta (AN’-tee RAHN’-tah) was pulled after allowing three goals on 13 shots. Game 7 is Monday in Raleigh, where the Hurricanes are 7-0 in the postseason.

Scheffler Leads In PGA Colonial

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the leader through three rounds of the Colonial.  Scheffler shook off his only bogey of the tournament in shooting a 2-under 68 with wind gusts of around 30 mph and temperatures in the upper-90s. His 11-under total is two strokes ahead of Brendon Todd and Scott Stallings.  Todd got into the mix with a bogey-free 65.

N.C. State Beats Pittsburgh In Semi-Finals Of ACC Tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Devonte Brown, Tommy White and Dominic Pilolli all hit home runs in a five-run first inning to spark 10th-seeded N.C. State to an 8-3 victory over No. 11 seed Pittsburgh in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. The victory sends the Wolf Pack (36-20) to Sunday’s championship game against No. 8 seed North Carolina. Brown homered on a 1-2 pitch to lead off the bottom of the first for N.C. State. White homered with one out to make it 2-0. Josh Hood walked and took third on a double by Noah Soles. J.T. Jarrett drove in Hood with a ground out, Pilolli followed with a two-run shot and the Wolf Pack never looked back.

Khan Excited About New Front Office

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan is embracing his new role with the club. Khan was recently promoted to take over for Kevin Colbert, who is retiring after a long run with the team that included a pair of Super Bowl victories. Khan is no stranger to the Steelers. He has been with the team for more than 20 years, most recently serving as a vice president of football operations and business administration. Khan says he’s excited about the trajectory of the team, adding that while he is bringing in some new faces to the team’s front office, the club’s high standards will not change.

Avalanche Win Series

ST. LOUIS (AP) -Darren Helm scored with 5.6 seconds left and Darcy Kuemper stopped 18 shots as the Colorado Avalanche finished off their second-round series with a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues in Game 6. J.T. Compher scored twice for Colorado, which advanced to the Western Conference finals for first time since 2002. The Avalanche had been eliminated in the second round each of the past three years. Colorado opens the series against Edmonton on Tuesday night in Denver. Jordan Kyrou and Justin Faulk scored for St. Louis and Ville Husso made 36 saves. On the winning goal, Helm scored off a drive from the faceoff circle.

Hurricanes Take Series Lead; Oilers To Conference Finals

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The Carolina Hurricanes are a win away from reaching the NHL’s Eastern Conference finals.  The Hurricanes own a 3-2 lead in their second-round series following a 3-1 victory over the Rangers.  The Canes won with special teams as Vincent Trochek scored short-handed and Teuvo Teravainen added a rare power-play goal for Carolina, which has struggled with the man advantage. Andrei Svechnikov also scored, beating Igor Shesterkin with a backhander on a breakaway midway through the third period.  The Hurricanes outshot the Rangers 34-17 and improved to 7-0 at home in the postseason compared to 0-5 outside Raleigh.  Shesterkin stopped 31 shots for the Rangers, who host Game 6 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have carried the Oilers to a 5-4 overtime victory against the Flames and a berth in the Western Conference finals.  McDavid provided the series clincher at 5:03 of the extra season, taking a pass from Draisaitl for his seventh goal of the postseason.  Draisaitl had four assists and finished with 17 points in the series, scoring at least three points in all five games.  McDavid and Draisaitl each have 26 points in the playoffs so far.  Zach Hyman had a goal and two assists for the Oilers, who will face either the Avalanche or Blues in the conference finals.

Warriors Reach NBA Finals

UNDATED (AP) – The Golden State Warriors are in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2019.  The Warriors were able to complete a five-game series win over the Mavericks in the Western Conference finals, 120-110.  All five Warriors starters and Jordan Poole all scored in double figures, led by Klay Thompson’s 32 points. Andrew Wiggins came up big with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Kevon Looney added 18 boards and 10 points.  Golden State led by 17 by halftime and pushed the margin to 23 early in the third quarter.  Luka Doncic had team highs of 28 points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks.

‘Forgotten Four’ To Be Honored At Canton

CANTON, Ohio (AP) – The four men who smashed the race barrier in professional football in 1946 have been selected to share the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Ralph Hay Pioneer Award. The Canton, Ohio,-based organization announced that Kenny Washington, Woody Strode and Hall of Famers Bill Willis and Marion Motley will be celebrated during the Hall’s enshrinement week in August.

Steelers Officially Name Omar Khan General Manager

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Omar Khan is the new general manager for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Khan is replacing Kevin Colbert, who is retiring at the end of the month following more than two decades with the club. Khan has been a longtime member of Pittsburgh’s front office, most recently serving as senior vice president of football and business operations. Khan’s immediate goal will be helping to make sure the Steelers stay competitive following the retirement of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who stepped away in January after 18 seasons.
