NFL Draft Set For Tonight

April 28, 2022 3:56 am

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – This year’s NFL draft class speaks reluctantly about its COVID-19 experiences. To some, they are inspirational reminders of what they’ve already overcome. To others, the challenges were more akin to old war stories. Whether it was the travel restrictions that prevented Alabama receiver John Metchie III from seeing his family in Canada for two years, Louisiana tackle Max Mitchell being pulled off the practice field after a test revealed he had COVID antibodies or Ohio State offensive lineman Nick Petit-Frere watching a season canceled and later reinstated, none of it has been easy to cope with. The Steelers have the 20th selection in the first round.

April 27, 2022 3:56 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) –  Willy Adames homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-8. Adames hit a two-run blast in the first inning and a three-run drive during a six-run sixth for the NL Central-leading Brewers. It was the first multi-homer game of his career. He added a two-run double in the fifth and finished 4 for 5, raising his batting average 45 points to .239. PITTSBURGH (AP) –  Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists to outduel Sidney Crosby, and the surging Edmonton Oilers rolled past the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1. McDavid pushed his season point total to an NHL-best 122 by finishing off his 22nd career four-point game with a pretty shot from a tight angle in the third period. His 44th goal gave the Oilers a three-goal lead. Evander Kane, Evan Bouchard, Zach Hyman and Zack Kassian also scored for Edmonton. Crosby had five shots on goal but didn’t record a point as the Penguins lost their second straight.

Steelers Take Close Look At Quarterbacks In Draft

April 26, 2022 3:48 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have taken an exhaustive look at the top quarterback prospects available ahead of the NFL draft. The Steelers invited seven quarterbacks to visit the team’s headquarters. That’s nearly a quarter of the 30 pre-draft visits the NFL allows teams before the draft. Pittsburgh holds the 20th overall pick. The Steelers haven’t taken a quarterback in the first round since grabbing Ben Roethlisberger at No. 11 in 2004. If the Steelers select a quarterback, they will compete with Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph for the starting job in 2022.

Safety Terrell Edmunds Returns In One-Year Deal

April 26, 2022 3:49 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing back safety Terrell Edmunds on a one-year deal. The deal will pay Edmunds $2.5 million. Pittsburgh drafted Edmunds in the first round in 2018, but declined to exercise his fifth-year option last spring. He put together a solid 2021, picking off two passes and finishing with 89 tackles in 17 games. The signing actually saved the Steelers more than $4 million based on what the value of Edmunds’ option would have been had they picked it up.

Trevor Bauer Suing Accuser

April 26, 2022 3:52 am

UNDATED (AP) – Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer has sued the woman who accused him of sexual assault in federal court in a move that came less than three months after prosecutors decided not to file criminal charges against the athlete.  The woman, whom the pitcher had met through social media, had alleged that Bauer beat and sexually abused her last year. She later sought – but was denied – a restraining order. LA prosecutors said in February there was insufficient evidence to win a conviction.

Pirates Take 3 Of 4 At Wrigley Field

April 25, 2022 3:50 am

CHICAGO (AP) – Dillon Peters keyed a solid performance by Pittsburgh’s bullpen and Kevin Newman had two hits to help the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3. Peters pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of JT Brubaker and allowed one hit while running his season-opening scoreless streak to 10 1/3 innings over five appearances. Chicago lost for the fifth time in six games overall – even after the day after it collected 23 hits during a historic romp. Ian Happ hit his first homer of the season for the Cubs.

Pirates Call Up RHP Beau Sulser

April 25, 2022 3:51 am

CHICAGO (AP) –  The Pittsburgh Pirates have added another arm to their weary pitching staff. They brought up right-hander Beau Sulser from Triple-A Indianapolis. It’s the first major league promotion for Sulser, the brother of Miami Marlins reliever Cole Sulser. Beau Sulser turns 28 on May 5. He went 1-2 with a 2.13 ERA in three starts with Indianapolis. To make room on Pittsburgh’s 40- and 28-man rosters, outfielder Anthony Alford was designated for assignment. Alford was reinstated from the 10-day injured list on Friday after being sidelined by a right wrist sprain.

Chicago Cubs Pound Pittsburgh 21-0

April 24, 2022 7:00 am

CHICAGO (AP) – Alfonso Rivas had three hits and five RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs stopped a four-game slide by pounding the Pittsburgh Pirates 21-0. Rivas, who was recalled Friday from Triple-A Iowa, capped Chicago’s eight-run second with a three-run homer. He tacked on RBI singles in the fourth and fifth. The Cubs finished with 23 hits in their most lopsided shutout win dating to at least 1901. Nico Hoerner collected a career-high four hits, and Seiya Suzuki, Willson Contreras and Ian Happ had three hits apiece. It was more than enough support for Kyle Hendricks, who pitched seven innings of two-hit ball. The Pirates play again this afternoon, with coverage starting at 1:20 p.m. on WJPA 1450 AM.
