Pirates Take 3 Of 4 At Wrigley Field

CHICAGO (AP) – Dillon Peters keyed a solid performance by Pittsburgh’s bullpen and Kevin Newman had two hits to help the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3. Peters pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of JT Brubaker and allowed one hit while running his season-opening scoreless streak to 10 1/3 innings over five appearances. Chicago lost for the fifth time in six games overall – even after the day after it collected 23 hits during a historic romp. Ian Happ hit his first homer of the season for the Cubs.

Pirates Call Up RHP Beau Sulser

CHICAGO (AP) –  The Pittsburgh Pirates have added another arm to their weary pitching staff. They brought up right-hander Beau Sulser from Triple-A Indianapolis. It’s the first major league promotion for Sulser, the brother of Miami Marlins reliever Cole Sulser. Beau Sulser turns 28 on May 5. He went 1-2 with a 2.13 ERA in three starts with Indianapolis. To make room on Pittsburgh’s 40- and 28-man rosters, outfielder Anthony Alford was designated for assignment. Alford was reinstated from the 10-day injured list on Friday after being sidelined by a right wrist sprain.

Penguins Fall In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (AP) –  Noah Cates had two goals and an assist, Martin Jones made 37 saves and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1. Morgan Frost added a goal and an assist and Travis Konecny scored an empty-netter for the Flyers, who won their second straight after losing six in a row. Sidney Crosby scored for the Penguins.

Chicago Cubs Pound Pittsburgh 21-0

CHICAGO (AP) – Alfonso Rivas had three hits and five RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs stopped a four-game slide by pounding the Pittsburgh Pirates 21-0. Rivas, who was recalled Friday from Triple-A Iowa, capped Chicago’s eight-run second with a three-run homer. He tacked on RBI singles in the fourth and fifth. The Cubs finished with 23 hits in their most lopsided shutout win dating to at least 1901. Nico Hoerner collected a career-high four hits, and Seiya Suzuki, Willson Contreras and Ian Happ had three hits apiece. It was more than enough support for Kyle Hendricks, who pitched seven innings of two-hit ball. The Pirates play again this afternoon, with coverage starting at 1:20 p.m. on WJPA 1450 AM.

Pens Beat Red Wings 7-2

DETROIT (AP) – Evgeni Malkin scored two goals, and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings 7-2. Kris Letang had a goal and two assists for the playoff-bound Penguins, who won for the third time in four games. Sidney Crosby, Rickard Rakell and Chad Ruhwedel each finished with a goal and an assist. Detroit dropped its third straight game. Jakub Vrana and Michael Rasmussen scored for the Red Wings, and Thomas Greiss made 23 saves.

Pirate Outfielder Alford Returns

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Friday that outfielder Anthony Alford completed his rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis and has returned to the major league club.  To make room on the roster, the Pirates optioned infielder/outfielder Hoy Park to Triple-A.   Meanwhile, RHP Max Kranick will continue his Indianapolis rehab assignment, as he pitches for the Triple-A team tonight.

Hockey Legend Guy LaFleur Dead At 70

MONTREAL (AP) – Hockey Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur, who helped the Montreal Canadiens win five Stanley Cup titles in the 1970s, has died at age 70. A cause of death was not immediately known, but Lafleur had been diagnosed with lung cancer. One of the greatest players of his generation, Lafleur registered 518 goals and 728 assists in 14 seasons with Montreal. The No. 1 pick in the 1971 NHL draft added 133 points (57 goals, 76 assists) in 124 playoff contests. (PHOTO: CBC)

Vogelbach’s HR Rallies Pirates Past Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) – Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run homer, Yoshi Tsutsugo had a two-run double and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the Chicago Cubs 4-3. The Pirates rebounded from a three-game sweep at Milwaukee with nine hits in the opener of a four-game series at Chicago. Pittsburgh starter Bryse Wilson allowed Rafael Ortega’s leadoff single in the first, then walked three straight batters. Jonathan Villar added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead, and Seiya Suzuki had an RBI groundout in the second for a 3-0 edge. Vogelbach homered in the third, and Tsutsugo’s double made it 4-3 Pirates in the fifth.

DeSmith 52 Saves, Guentzel Hat Trick, Pens Top Boston

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Casey DeSmith made a career-high 52 saves and Jake Guentzel scored three goals as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Boston Bruins 4-0. Guentzel completed the hat trick with an empty-netter, his 40th goal of the season. Pittsburgh moved two points ahead of Washington for third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Penguins, Bruins and Capitals have already secured playoff spots but are fighting for seeding in the Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh and Boston are knotted at 99 points apiece. Jason Zucker also scored for the Penguins. Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves for the Bruins, who have lost five of eight.

Despite Merger – NCAA Affirms Continuation Of Independent Athletic Programs

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – College sports’ governing body is giving its permission for six state-owned universities in Pennsylvania to continue to compete as separate entities despite merging into two umbrella institutions. The State System of Higher Education announced the decision Wednesday that pertains to sports in Division II at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield, California, Clarion and Edinboro universities. The NCAA has yet to rule on a small number of Division I teams the schools also field. California, Clarion and Edinboro merged last year into Pennsylvania Western University, or PennWest. The others are now Commonwealth University. The schools compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
