MLB, Union Discuss Next Step In Talks

March 4, 2022 3:54 am

NEW YORK (AP) – Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem and chief union negotiator Bruce Meyer met for 1 1/2 hours Thursday and discussed the major issues in the stalled talks to reach a deal that would end Major League Baseball’s lockout.  Union general counsel Ian Penny and MLB Executive Vice President Morgan Sword also participated in the session.  Negotiations broke off Tuesday after the ninth straight day of meetings in Jupiter, Florida. That led baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred to announce that opening day on March 31 and the first two series for each team this season had been canceled.

Plenty Of Talk About Pickett’s Hands

March 3, 2022 3:46 am

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – University of Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett is one of the top quarterback prospects at this year’s NFL scouting combine. But all the buzz isn’t about his accuracy, mobility or savvy. It’s about how big – or small – his hands are. Especially teams that play in cold weather often shy away from QBs who have smaller hands because of concerns about them fumbling the football. But there have been plenty of quarterbacks who proved size doesn’t matter all that much. That includes Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. And there’s a long list of large-handed QBs who never got the upper hand.

#4 Duke Rolls Over Pitt

March 2, 2022 3:48 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Freshman guard Trevor Keels scored a career-high 27 points, Paolo Banchero added 21 and Duke clinched at least a share of its 13th Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title under Mike Krzyzewski with an 86-56 win over Pittsburgh. The Blue Devils (26-4, 16-3) wasted little time making sure Krzyzewski would pick up his ACC-record 201st road win, taking a 13-point lead before the game was four minutes old and cruising. John Hugley led Pitt with 19 points. The Panthers were never in it while losing their third straight.

Players Reject ‘Best & Final’ Offer; Opening Day Canceled

March 2, 2022 2:45 am

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – The upcoming Major League Baseball season just got a little shorter.  Commissioner Rob Manfred says the sport will lose regular-season games over a labor dispute for the first time in 27 years after acrimonious lockout talks collapsed in the hours before management’s deadline.  Manfred said he is canceling the first two series of a season that was set to begin March 31, dropping the schedule from 162 games to likely 156 games at most.  Manfred said the league and union have not made plans for future negotiations with the lockout in its 90th day.

March 1, 2022 3:47 am

Derek Jeter announced a surprise departure from the Miami Marlins after 4 1/2 mostly unsuccessful years that didn’t come remotely close to matching his success as a player for the New York Yankees. Jeter became CEO of the Marlins in September 2017 when Bruce Sherman bought the team from Jeffrey Loria. Miami went 218-327 during his four seasons at the helm, finishing with a winning record only once at 31-29 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Russia Invasion Causing Sports Fallout

March 1, 2022 3:49 am

GENEVA (AP) – The International Olympic Committee has made a sweeping move to isolate and condemn Russia over the country’s invasion of Ukraine.  The IOC has urged others to exclude Russian athletes and officials from international events. The IOC says the move is needed to “protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all the participants.” It opens the way for FIFA to exclude Russia from a World Cup soccer qualifying playoff match on March 24. Poland already has refused to play the scheduled game against Russia. The IOC’s call also applied to athletes and officials from Belarus because that country has abetted Russia’s invasion.
