Pittsburgh Penguins May Soon Be Under New Ownership

November 17, 2021 3:21 am

It’s possible that the Pens may soon have a new owner. According to the Wall Street Journal, Fenway Sports Group LLC, the company that owns the Boston Red Sox, is in advanced talks to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins. The WSJ report said a deal “could be finalized later this week, assuming the talks don’t fall apart.” The group also owns the Red Sox’s Low-A affiliate and part of the Red Sox’s Triple-A affiliate, and 80 percent of the sports television network NESN. John W. Henry is the principal owner of Fenway Sports Group, owning 40 percent. Other partners in Fenway Sports Group include billionaire brothers Ted and Bill Alfond, LeBron James, and James’ business manager Maverick Carter. They also own Roush Fenway Racing. The current ownership group of the Penguins includes Mario Lemieux, John Surma and Debra Cafaro. They bought the franchise and helped it recover from bankruptcy, turning it into one of the most successful sport franchises in the National Hockey League. Sources say Lemieux will retain a minority stake and upper management, including David Morehouse, will stay.

Roethlisberger & Watt May Play Sunday – Fitzpatrick Likely Still Out

November 17, 2021 3:30 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and outside linebacker T.J. Watt will both have an opportunity to play, while safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is expected to miss Sunday’s road game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Roethlisberger entered the NFL’s reserve/COVID-19 protocol on Saturday night after testing positive and he missed Sunday’s tie with the Detroit Lions. Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Roethlisberger has a chance to play, but the Steelers are currently preparing to start backup quarterback Mason Rudolph. Watt left in the third quarter of Sunday’s game with hip and knee injuries and did not return. Fitzpatrick played on Sunday, but he joined Roethlisberger on the COVID-19 list on Monday.

Steelers Settle For ‘Ugly’ Tie With Lions

November 15, 2021 3:56 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions slogged their way to a 16-16 tie in an ugly nearly four-hour marathon that produced more comedy than highlights. Pittsburgh’s Mason Rudolph completed 30 of 50 passes for 242 yards with a touchdown and an interception while filling in for Ben Roethlisberger, who was placed on the COVID-19 list on Saturday night. Najee Harris ran for 105 yards but the Steelers (5-3-1) saw their four-game winning streak halted in the dank mist at rainy Heinz Field. De’Andre Swift ran for a career-high 130 yards for the Lions (0-8-1), who relied heavily on the run to avoid a ninth straight loss.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan was also back from protocol.

AP Top 25: Alabama Jumps Cincy To #2

November 15, 2021 3:58 am

UNDATED (AP) – Alabama has jumped Cincinnati to No. 2 behind Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll.  Georgia is a unanimous No. 1 for the sixth consecutive week. The switch from Cincinnati at No. 2 to Alabama was more about the Bearcats than the Crimson Tide. Cincinnati remained unbeaten after winning at USF 45-28, but it was the fourth straight week the Bearcats played a team with a losing record and found themselves in a competitive game in the second half.  Meanwhile, Oklahoma dropped eight spots to No. 12 after losing for the first time this season. So behind No. 3 Cincinnati, Oklahoma’s tumble meant No. 4 Oregon, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Michigan State, No. 8 Michigan and No. 9 Oklahoma State all moved up one spot.  The Sooners lost to Baylor who moved up to No. 11 behind No. 10 Mississippi.

Cal U Snubbed by NCAA

November 14, 2021 5:22 pm

California University of Pennsylvania was not invited to the NCAA Division II football championships, despite its 9-1 record. The Vulcans lost to Slippery Rock a week ago and that head-to-head result trumped Cal U’s better overall record. In addition, the NCAA’s “earned access” rule, granting playoff access to conference champions who league does not have a team in the region’s top seven spot, put Findlay in and took the berth away from the Vulcans.
