The Steelers had lost four since then in Foxborough, including the AFC championship game in the 2016 season. The Patriots were driving with a chance to tie and had fourth-and-1 at the Pittsburgh 28, but DeMario Douglas caught a pass from Drake Maye and was stopped for a 1-yard loss.

September 21, 2025 7:41 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Bubba Chandler and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, and Nick Yorke and Bryan Reynolds hit home runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Athletics 2-0 on Saturday night to end a five-game losing streak. Chandler allowed only Jacob Wilson’s two-out double in the second inning while striking out six and walking none. He has given up one run in 11 innings in his last two starts since getting rocked for nine runs in 2 2/3 innings by Milwaukee on Sept. 7. Braxton Ashcraft followed with three perfect innings and six strikeouts. Dennis Santana worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save and first since Sept. 3. (Photo: AP)

GM Cherington Expects To Helm Pirates In 2026

September 21, 2025 7:42 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh general manager Ben Cherington expects to return in 2026 despite the Pirates having losing seasons during each of his six years on the job. Cherington said Saturday that Pirates owner Bob Nutting and team president Travis Williams have not given any indication that he might be fired. The Pirates have never revealed Cherington’s contract status, but it is believed he is signed through 2026 or 2027. The Pirates were 65-89 going into Saturday night’s game and assured of a second straight last-place finish in the National League Central. The Pirates have had 29 losing seasons in the last 33 years.

Pirates Lose To A’s Friday At PNC Park

September 20, 2025 5:24 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Lawrence Butler hit a go-ahead, three-run homer, Nick Kurtz added a solo shot and the Athletics beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Friday night. Mitch Keller didn’t allow a baserunner until Kurtz, a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, homered with two outs in the fourth to get the Athletics within 3-1. It was the 33rd homer for Kurtz, who had plenty of family and friends in attendance as he tied Jose Canseco (1986) for the second-most home runs by an A’s rookie. Mark McGwire hit 49 in 1987. Carlos Cortes had a one-out single in the fifth and Zack Gelof walked with two outs before Butler launched his 21st home run, a 424-foot shot to right-center, to put the Athletics up 4-3. Spencer Horwitz, Bryan Reynolds and Nick Gonzales drove in first-inning runs against Luis Severino for a 3-0 lead. Severino (7-11) allowed three runs — one earned — on seven hits in five innings. Michael Kelly retired Tommy Pham on a double-play grounder with one out and runners on the corners in the ninth for his second big league save. Keller (6-15) gave up four runs on four hits in five innings. Gelof left in the bottom of the fifth after re-injuring his right wrist diving for a ball between first and second. The second baseman underwent surgery on March 26 and has played just 30 games this season. The Athletics (73-81) have won two straight and seven of eight, while the Pirates (65-89) have lost five in a row and 12 of 13.

James Cook had 108 yards rushing and a 2-yard TD as the Bills continued their dominance of Miami. Buffalo has won seven straight and 14 of the past 15, including playoffs, against its AFC East rival. The Dolphins fell to 0-3 and coach Mike McDaniel will likely face more questions about his job security. Allen finished 22 of 28 for 213 yards and improved his record to 14-2 over Miami.

Steelers Look To Change Recent History At Patriots

September 19, 2025 4:23 am

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled in New England since 2002, winning only once there in seven games. Aaron Rodgers is in his first season with the Steelers, but has also faced challenges in New England, where he’s 0-2. The setbacks, which include a 25-22 loss while with the Jets last season are still vivid in Rodgers’ mind. This may be his best opportunity to get a win yet. The Patriots’ defense ranks last in the NFL against the pass through the first two weeks. But New England could get back its best pass defender this week, with cornerback Christian Gonzalez practicing for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury during training camp.
