Pirates Extend Manager Don Kelly’s Contract

September 30, 2025 1:10 am

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the club has extended the contract of manager Don Kelly. The 45-year-old Kelly made his managerial debut on May 9 vs. Atlanta. Following Kelly’s appointment to being named the team’s 42nd manager in club history, Pittsburgh swept seven series, including series against the National League East champion Philadelphia Phillies (June 6-8), American League Central wild card Detroit Tigers (July 21-23) and National League West champion Los Angeles Dodgers (September 2-4). Pittsburgh’s 3.59 staff ERA from May 9 through the conclusion of the regular season ranked fourth in all of Major League Baseball, trailing only Milwaukee (3.38), Texas (3.46) and Cleveland (3.52). The Pirates also recorded the sixth-best fielding percentage (.988) in Major League Baseball from May 9 through the end of the season, committing the sixth-fewest errors (50) in the league in that span.

“Donnie has earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans – and he has certainly earned mine,” said Pirates Chairman, Bob Nutting. “Donnie took over the team at a true low point. Since then, we’ve seen meaningful progress, not just in the clubhouse culture, but on the field. His connection to the community and passion for the franchise make him more than just a manager. He is a Pittsburgher; he is part of our community. He’s the right fit, at the right time, and is the right person to lead us forward.”

“I’m proud to continue leading the Pirates,” said Kelly. “Our clubhouse is full of players who care deeply about each other, about winning, and about representing Pittsburgh the right way. I was a Pirates fan first. I know our fans deserve a team that delivers on the field, and it’s on me to make sure we reach that standard.”

“Donnie is an elite communicator. He is deeply trusted by our players because he’s credible, consistent, and unafraid of tough conversations,” said Pirates General Manager, Ben Cherington. “His background as both a scout and a coach gives him a rare perspective: patience when it’s needed, and an unwavering belief in players’ ability to improve. Above all, he values people and winning. His ability to adjust, lead, and do the hard work makes him the right leader.”

September 29, 2025 2:40 am

DUBLIN (AP) — Kenneth Gainwell ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns and the Pittsburgh Steelers held on to beat the Minnesota Vikings 24-21 on Sunday in Ireland’s first regular-season NFL game.  DK Metcalf had five catches for 126 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown for the Steelers, who improved to 3-1 going into their bye week.  The Steelers victory gave quarterback Aaron Rodgers his first international win and capped a Rooney family homecoming in front of a decidedly pro-Steelers crowd of 74,512 at Croke Park. Rodgers was 18 for 22 for 200 yards and the touchdown to Metcalf.  Carson Wentz, making his second consecutive start for the injured J.J. McCarthy, was 30 for 46 for 350 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Vikings (2-2).  T.J. Watt’s interception of Wentz’s pass — tipped by Cam Heyward at the line of scrimmage — set up the Steelers on the Minnesota 35 in the third quarter, and Gainwell scored from 4 yards for a 21-6 lead. It was nearly identical to Gainwell’s 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.  DeShon Elliott had the other interception and the Steelers sacked Wentz six times.  (Photo:  AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Micah Parsons finally got a sack for the Green Bay Packers against his former mentor in overtime. But nobody won in the star rusher’s return to Dallas on Sunday night. The Cowboys had to settle for a short field goal on the opening possession in overtime, that kick coming two plays after Parsons tackled a scrambling Dak Prescott from behind at the 4 for a sack. Green Bay then drove the field for a field goal on the final play for a 40-40 tie. Parsons finished with that one solo tackle and sack, along with two assisted tackles and three quarterback hurries. .

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Europe has won the Ryder Cup, just like everyone expected. It just didn’t happen without a few nervous moments. The Americans rallied from a seven-point deficit to have a flicker of hope. Europe needed only two points to retain the cup. Ludvig Åberg in the fifth match got the first one. Matt Fitzpatrick earned a halve that felt like a consolation because he had Bryson DeChambeau down by 5 holes at one point. Shane Lowry put his name in Irish lore with a halve to secure the cup. And then Tyrrell Hatton got the winning half-point for Europe.
