Trinity lost to Connellsville for the second straight time, falling to the WPIAL champion Falcons in the PIAA Team Tournament Round III Consolations, ending the Hillers’ stay in the tournament. Major decisions for Robbie Allison and Dom Canali, wins by Blake Reihner and Zane Garner and forfeits to Bodie Morgan and Adam Watson could not overcome an early Connellsville lead. Three pins and a major decision led the Falcons into the consolation semifinals.
Facing elimination, Trinity nearly doubled up La Salle College, 45-23, to advance to Saturday’s Round III Consolations. Trinity got pins from Zane Garner, Blake Reihner, Bodie Morgan and a tech fall from TJ Allison in the win. The Hillers face Connellsville for the second time in a week. The Falcons edged Trinity last Saturday in the WPIAL Finals.
Friday afternoon, Bethlehem Catholic won the final three bouts to break a 24-all tie, beating Trinity in the 3A quarterfinals. Blake Reihner, TJ Allison and Robbie Allison scored falls to pull Trinity even with three bouts to go. Bethlehem Catholic scored two falls and a tech fall to set the final score. The Hillers drop into a Round II consolation match later Friday afternoon against District 12 champion La Salle College High School.
Thursday, Trinity rebounded from a one-point loss in the WPIAL Team Tournament final, scoring a 54-14 win over District 4 champion Selinsgrove in the opening round of the 3A bracket. Mickey Horne, Jacob Wright, Dom Canali, Zane Garner, Blake Reihner, TJ Allison, Bodie Morgan and Robbie Allison delivered pins for the Hillers. Trinity advances to the quarterfinals and will face District 11 champion Bethlehem Catholic Friday afternoon on the WJPA Sports Network.

Friday morning, Burgettstown’s stay in the tournament ended as the Blue Devils lost to Montoursville. Rudy Brown had a pin for Burgettstown and Gaven Suica added a technical fall for the Blue Devils only bonus points.
Thursday, Burgettstown built a 27-24 lead against District 9 champion Clearfield but lost the final three bouts, losing 42-27. The Blue Devils got pins from Joey Baronick and Darius Simmons, and a technical fall from Gaven Suica.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 on Saturday night to end a five-game losing streak. Nino Niederreiter and Mark Scheifele scored to help Winnipeg avenge a 3-0 loss in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. Bryan Rust scored for Pittsburgh, and Tristan Jarry made 29 saves. Sidney Crosby’s nine-game points streak ended.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Chiefs go as far as Patrick Mahomes takes them. The 49ers have Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and a star-studded group surrounding Brock Purdy. This Super Bowl will come down to the other side of the ball. Defense wins the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday. Kansas City is seeking to become the NFL’s first repeat champion in 19 years. San Francisco is aiming for a record-tying sixth Super Bowl title. Mahomes, Travis Kelce and coach Andy Reid get most of the attention on the Chiefs, but defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit deserves plenty of credit for carrying the team during various points of the season when the offense was inconsistent and out of sync.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Will Taylor Swift make it to the Super Bowl in time? Intrepid flight trackers online seem to think so. Fans of the music superstar and aviation journalists believe they have identified Swift’s private jet, which arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport just after 3:30 p.m. local time from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. Yet to be revealed are her transportation plans onward to Las Vegas. That’s where Swift’s boyfriend, NFL star tight end Travis Kelce, will play in Sunday’s Super Bowl. She has followed Kelce for much of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season. Representatives for Swift and a private aviation company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Boys Basketball — Fort Cherry and Wash High boys each won road games, clinching section championships, Fort Cherry wins the 2A-4 title outright, Wash High has at least a share of the 3A-4 championships, pending tomorrow’s Yough/Mt. Pleasant game. Beth-Center lost its ‘win & in’ game at home against Frazier. Peters Township, Trinity,m McGuffey and Chartiers-Houston won their playoff tune-up finales.
Girls Basketball — Canon-McMillan did what no other team had done all year, knocking off #1 Peters Township, handing the Indians their first loss of the season. Chartiers-Houston won at Carmichaels to clinch a share of the 2A-4 championship.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves as the Minnesota Wild beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. Matt Boldy and Jonas Brodin also scored for Minnesota, which has won five of seven. Fleury, who earned his 553rd career win, was honored in a pregame ceremony nearly a month after passing Patrick Roy (551) for second place in NHL history. He trails only Martin Brodeur, who has 691 wins. Reilly Smith and Sidney Crosby scored for the Penguins, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — New Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has hired Tom Arth as quarterbacks coach, Zach Azzanni as wide receivers coach and Mateo Kambui as offensive assistant. Arth replaces Mike Sullivan, who held the position each of the last three seasons and spent the final weeks of 2023 calling the plays after the Steelers fired former offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Arth spent the last two seasons as the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Girls Basketball — Ruby Morgan scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, helping Trinity to a three-point road win and a share of the 5A Section 4 title. The senior hit a pair of three-pointers in a 90-second span giving Trinity a lead it would not surrender. Maddi Roberts led all scorers with 11 points. Waynesburg’s win gives the Raiders a share of the 3A Section 4 championship. Burgettstown and Fort Cherry share the 2A Section 2 championship. Wash High’s win at Beth-Center gives the Little Prexies at least a share of the 2A Section 4 title. Chartiers-Houston can grab a share with a win at Carmichaels.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year at the NFL Honors awards show. Prince Harry introduced Heyward. This was the sixth time the Steelers nominated Heyward for the award. Heyward created the Heyward House Foundation that supports several initiatives in the Pittsburgh area. The foundation also honors his father, Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, a fullback who played 11 seasons in the NFL. He died in 2006 at 39 of brain cancer.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Lamar Jackson was a near-unanimous choice for his second AP NFL Most Valuable Player award announced at NFL Honors on Thursday night. Christian McCaffrey ran away with the AP Offensive Player of the Year award. Myles Garrett beat out T.J. Watt for the AP Defensive Player of the Year award. C.J. Stroud won the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award in a landslide. Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. won the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award. The Browns took home four awards. Quarterback Joe Flacco was AP Comeback Player of the Year. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski edged DeMeco Ryans for AP Coach of the Year honors by one first-place vote. Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz won the AP Assistant Coach of the Year award.
