High School Football, Week 1

Most schools in the two-county area played their second games of the 2021 High School Football season Friday. A handful of others played their first. And one county team was supposed to play Friday but did not due to COVID-19 concerns with their opponent.

Maddox Truschel threw three TD passes and ran for another score, leading Fort Cherry to a 45-8 win over Avella. Dylan Rogers caught all three of the scoring passes for the Rangers. Anthony D’Allesandro returned an interception 57 yards for a score, with Nate Heinrendt and Billy Felton adding rushing touchdowns as Fort Cherry evened its record at 1-1.  Avella’s only score came in the third quarter, a 10-yard run by quarterback KJ Rush as the Eagles dropped to 0-2.

Pirates Lose 5 Straight Games

CHICAGO — Rookie Frank Schwindel hustled hard and sprawled for an RBI single that capped a three-run rally with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Chicago Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 Saturday for their fifth straight win. Schwindel had three hits, including a solo home run that sailed into Wrigley Field’s left-field video board. He has five homers in six games and 10 this season. Alfonso Rivas singled home a run in the ninth that drew the Cubs within 6-5 and Rafael Ortega’s third hit of the game tied it when right fielder Ben Gamel couldn’t make a diving catch. With runners on second and third, Schwindel hit a grounder that shortstop Kevin Newman gloved in the hole. Newman pivoted and made a midair throw to first that was wide, and Colin Moran came off the base to catch it. Schwindel made a dive into the bag and narrowly avoided the tag. The play withstood a video review, handing the Pirates their fifth straight loss.

Cubs Beat Pirates On Difo Error In 11th

CHICAGO (AP) – Sergio Alcantara scampered home when second baseman Wilmer Difo mishandled a popup in the 11th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 for their third straight win. Rafael Ortega and Ian Happ homered for Chicago, and Alcantara logged the first three-hit game of his career. Codi Heuer got three outs for the win. Alcantara began the 11th on second base and advanced on Ortega’s sacrifice bunt. Happ then sent a high fly to second, where Difo committed the game-ending error.

#4 Ohio State Beats Minnesota In Opener

UNDATED (AP) – C.J. Stroud passed for 294 yards and four touchdowns in his debut as the Ohio State starter and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes kept coach Ryan Day unbeaten in Big Ten play with a 45-31 victory over Minnesota on Thursday night. The Buckeyes flashed their five-star speed with two 70-plus-yard scores in the opener, one early on a run off right end by Miyan Williams and one late on a third-down screen to true freshman TreVeyon Henderson. Day, starting his third full year on the job, is 24-2 overall and 16-0 in conference games.

Djokovic Advances At U.S. Open

NEW YORK (AP) – Novak Djokovic has easily reached the third round of the U.S. Open with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. Djokovic improved to 15-0 in second-round matches at the U.S. Open and remained unbeaten in Grand Slam matches this season. He is trying to become the first man to win all four majors in the same year since 1969.The No. 1 seed’s biggest problem came in the second set with a heckling fan, but Djokovic regained his concentration to put away the victory.

White Sox Beat Pirates Again

CHICAGO (AP) – Rookie Gavin Sheets hit two home runs, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. Sheets, who was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte before the game, hit a three-run homer off Max Kranick (1-3) with two out in the fourth inning to snap a scoreless tie.White Sox starter Carlos Rodon (10-5) pitched five innings of five-hit ball.

Dodgers Overtake Giants In NL West

UNDATED (AP) – For the first time since May 30 the San Francisco Giants are looking up at another team in the NL West standings.  The Dodgers took over first place in the division, moving a half-game ahead of the Giants with a 4-3 comeback win over the Braves. Los Angeles wasted a 2-0 lead and trailed 3-2 before Justin Turner and AJ Pollock delivered RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth.  Max Muncy and Austin Barnes hit solo homers for the Dodgers, who have made up 4 1/2 games on the Giants in two weeks.  Dansby Swanson’s eighth-inning homer put Atlanta ahead before the Braves saw their lead in the NL East trimmed to two games over the Phillies.  The Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Giants with a 5-2 victory that gives Milwaukee a 10 1/2-game lead in the NL West. Jace Peterson broke a 2-2 deadlock with an RBI single in the seventh. Lorenzo Cain added a two-run blast in the ninth to secure the Giants’ fifth loss in six games.

Tuitt, Banner & McFarland Jr. On Steelers Injured Reserve List

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed defensive end Stephon Tuitt on the injured reserve/return list. Defensive coordinator Keith Butler says Tuitt has an unspecified issue with one of his knees. Butler added he expects Tuitt to be back at some point but isn’t sure when. The 28-year-old is coming off a career-best 11 sacks during the 2020 season. The team also placed offensive lineman Zach Banner and running back Anthony McFarland Jr. on the IR/return list.

NFL; Saints To Call Jacksonville Home For Opener

UNDATED (AP) – The New Orleans Saints will open their regular-season schedule in Jacksonville instead of the Superdome.  The Saints will take on Green Bay in Jacksonville on Sept. 12 after practicing in Dallas for the better part of two weeks. The venue change was announced three days after Hurricane Ida battered the Louisiana coast as a Category 4 hurricane, leaving the entirety of New Orleans in darkness until small pockets of the city began to get power back on Wednesday.

Riverview/Chartiers-Houston COVID Postponed

Following an opening-week victory, the Chartiers-Houston football team was set to host Riverview Friday night. That game has been postponed due to “multiple cases of COVID-19” on the Riverview squad according to the school’s athletic director, Mario Rometo. The school has suspended all football activities until at least Sept. 7. Chartiers-Houston will have an off night before traveling to Mapletown for its next game, Sept. 10.
