Roger Huston Bids Meadows Farewell

November 3, 2019 6:31 am

After 44 years behind the mic, Roger Huston will no longer “Be There” at the Meadows. Huston, whose career at the harness track started in 1976, has taken a position with Ohio Harness Racing where he’ll serve as an ambassador for the sport. After calling more than 188,000 races, Huston said he was ready for a change and will begin his new position in two weeks. He called his final Meadows racing card Saturday afternoon after being feted by several hundred people in the winners’ circle, including drivers, trainers, owners, caretakers and former colleagues. Former WJPA Radio News Director, who worked with Huston for more than 20 years on the Meadows Racing Network, said that Huston brought the sport to the general public, featuring talks with owners, drivers and trainers and fans. When asked if he’d return to call the Adios Pace for the Orchids, the track’s signature event, Huston said that if he’s invited by the Meadows to do so, he would do everything possible to return.

Cole Leads Astros Over Nationals

October 28, 2019 3:53 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s been 86 years since Washington baseball fans witnessed a World Series home win by one of their three major league teams. The wait continues.  The Houston Astros have a three-games-to-two lead in the Fall Classic after beating the Nationals in Washington for the third straight night, 7-1. The Astros took the three games in DC by a combined 19-3 margin after dropping the first two games at home.  It was a redemption game for Gerrit Cole, who dropped the series opener to end his 19-game winning streak. Cole was terrific in this one, limiting the Nationals to three hits while striking out nine over seven innings.  Cole blanked the Nats until Juan Soto homered with one out in the seventh to trim Houston’s lead to 4-1.  The Nationals banged out a trio of two-run homers while outhitting the Nationals, 10-4. Yordan Alvarez opened the scoring with a second-inning homer and finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Carlos Correa added a two-run blast in the fourth, and George Springer capped the scoring with his second homer of the series.  Joe Ross was pressed into service when scheduled starter when ace Max Scherzer couldn’t lift his arm Sunday morning. Scherzer says he underwent treatment after the neck spasms started a few days earlier.  Ross was reached for four runs and five hits over five innings.  Game 6 is Tuesday in Houston.

Astros Even World Series

October 27, 2019 7:53 am

WASHINGTON (AP) – The World Series is all even at two games apiece after Alex Bregman and the Houston Astros cruised to victory in Game 4 at Washington. Bregman was 3-for-5 with a grand slam and had five RBIs as the Astros blasted the Nationals, 8-1. Bregman cleared the bases in the seventh inning to cap the scoring. Robinson Chirinos homered for the second straight night, a two-run blast off losing pitcher Patrick Corbin to make it 4-0 in the fourth inning. Michael Brantley had three hits and scored twice for the Astros, who have taken the first two games in Washington by a combined 12-2 margin after being outscored 17-7 in back-to-back losses to the Nationals in Houston. Winning pitcher Jose Urquidy gave the Astros their best starting performance of the series so far, outdoing Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke . Urquidy was reached for just two hits and no walks while striking out four over five scoreless innings.
Corbin left after six innings, charged with four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Bregman and Yuli Gurriel  jumped on Corbin with RBI singles in the top of the first. Washington’s only run came on a bases-loaded grounder by Juan Soto in the sixth. Game 5 is Sunday in Washington.
