PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pedro Pages doubled home pinch runner Michael Siani and then scored on Alec Burleson’s RBI single as the the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 in 10 innings. St. Louis took two of three from its NL Central Division rivals by winning a series finale for the 12th time in its last 13 chances. Burleson and Dylan Carlson had two hits apiece for the Cardinals. John King retired Andrew McCutchen with the tying run on second in the 10th to pick up the victory for St. Louis, which improved to 30-17 since May 12.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed rookie pitcher Jared Jones on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain. The Pirates made the move less than 24 hours after Jones left following five innings and 78 pitches in what became a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals. Jones reported feeling discomfort in his right side during the game but said afterward, “it’s nothing to be concerned about, I don’t think.” The 22-year-old Jones is 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 91 innings in 16 starts.

HOUSTON (AP) — Defending champion Argentina advanced to the Copa America semifinals, beating Ecuador 4-2 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw after conceding a tying goal in second-half injury time. Lionel Messi put Argentina’s first penalty kick off the crossbar but goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez saved Ecuador’s first two attempts in the shootout and Nicolás Otamendi beat Alexander Domínguez with the winning kick. Lisandro Martínez have Argentina a 35th-minute lead, but Kevin Rodríguez scored the score in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. Ecuador’s Enner Valencia had put a penalty kick off a post in the 60th minute after a hand ball by Rodrigo De Paul.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz hit run-scoring singles on consecutive pitches in the 10th inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4. Willson Contreras’ two-run homer in the eighth off Pittsburgh’s Colin Holderman tied the score 3-3. Alec Burleson’ put St. Louis ahead with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly off Aroldis Chapman. Andrew McCutchen drew a one-out walk from Andrew Kittridge, and Reynolds and Cruz got hits off JoJo Romero.

WASHINGTON, Pa. (July 3) – The Washington Wild Things defeated the Florence Y’alls 6-3 in the second of their nine-game homestand to even the series. After walking two batters in the top of the first, starting pitcher Malik Barrington worked his way out of a first and third, one out jam after Zade Richardson and Stephen Hrustich both popped out to Andrew Czech at first base. Washington looks to take the series Thursday night on Independence Day.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — IndyCar will unveil its hybrid engine system this weekend at the Mid-Ohio race track. It has been a joint effort involving IndyCar and engineers from Chevrolet and Honda, the two engine suppliers for the series. Each took on a different piece of the hybrid system to develop. The system has gone through extensive testing and IndyCar is confident in its product. Drivers will need to learn when to deploy quick, powerful energy boosts that provide about 120 extra horsepower, pushing the total for IndyCar engines over 800 for the first time in decades. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nolan Gorman hit his second career grand slam, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4. Matt Carpenter dropped a soft single into left to load the bases with no outs in the fourth inning. Gorman followed with his 17th homer of the season, a 415-foot drive to left-center on a 1-2 sweeper from Mitch Keller. Cardinals starter Kyle Gibson gave up four runs, all in the fifth, and five hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked one. Ryan Helsley struck out one in a perfect ninth inning, earning his major league-leading 31st save in 32 opportunities.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Shohei Ohtani won’t participate in the Home Run Derby on July 15 despite the Japanese superstar ranking second in the majors with 27 homers for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani has taken part in the Derby just once, exiting in the first round in 2021 at Coors Field in Denver. This year’s event is at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. He says he’s in the middle of his rehab from an injured elbow ligament and subsequent surgery last fall that is keeping him from pitching this season. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says it’s not Ohtani’s responsibility alone to the carry the sport.

PITTSBURGH — The Penguins have released the regular season schedule. The team released the schedule on Tuesday, a day after announcing the 2024-25 regular season starts in Pittsburgh against the division-rival New York Rangers on Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Following the home opener, the team plays seven of the next nine games on the road but then plays 14 games in a 20-game stretch at home. The team says November is packed with home games, including a five-game homestand against San Jose, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, the first-ever matchup against the Utah Hockey Club and Vancouver. The team also has five-game homestands in January and March and plays 14 sets of back-to-back games. Pittsburgh faces each Metropolitan Division opponent twice, each Western Conference opponent twice and each Atlantic Division opponent three times.

NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will team up on the WNBA All-Star team to play against the U.S. Olympic team led by A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. The pair of remarkable rookies were selected Tuesday by a combination of votes from the media, fans, players and the league’s 12 coaches to play in Phoenix on July 20. Clark was the leading vote-getter from the fans with her Indiana teammate Aliyah Boston finishing second. Reese was fifth. Joining the rookies on the WNBA team were DeWanna Bonner and Brionna Jones of Connecticut, Allisha Gray of Atlanta, Dearica Hamby of Los Angeles, Jonquel Jones of New York, Kayla McBride of Minnesota, Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana, Nneka Ogwumike of Seattle and Arike Ogunbowale of Dallas.
