November 1, 2019 3:48 am

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns and the San Francisco 49ers reach the halfway point of their season undefeated, beating the Arizona Cardinals 28-25 Thursday night.  San Francisco, now 8-0, fell behind 7-0, but responded with three touchdowns – including one as time expired in the second quarter after Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury called a timeout and gave the 49ers a second chance on fourth down – to take a 21-7 halftime lead.  The 49ers were in control until about five minutes left in the fourth quarter, when Andy Isabella caught a short pass and sprinted 88 yards to help the Cardinals pull to 28-25.  But the 49ers were able to run out the clock on their ensuing offensive drive to end Arizona’s comeback.  Arizona (3-5-1) lost its second straight game. Rookie quarterback Kyler Murray threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns.

Nationals Rally To Win First World Series

October 31, 2019 3:49 am

HOUSTON (AP) – Washington has a World Series championship for the first time since the 1924 Senators beat the New York Giants.  Anthony Rendon and Howie Kendrick belted huge home runs in the seventh inning as the Nationals rallied to take Game 7, 6-2 over the Astros in Houston. Winning pitcher Patrick Corbin gave the Nats three solid innings of shutout relief to close out a series in which the road team won every game.  Astros starter Zack Greinke cruised through the first 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk until the dam burst. Rendon belted a solo homer got the Nationals within 2-1 before Howie Kendrick slammed a two-run blast off reliever Will Harris two batters later.  It was yet another big postseason hit for Kendrick, who was the MVP of the NL Championship Series after slamming a tiebreaking grand slam in extra innings to give the Nats the fifth and deciding game of the division series against the Dodgers.  Juan Soto doubled Washington’s lead with an RBI single in the eighth, one inning before Adam Eaton’s two-run single put the Nats in complete control.  Houston managed just two of their nine hits after Washington starter Max Scherzer left the game. Scherzer needed 103 pitches to complete his five innings of work, yielding seven hits and four walks but just two runs. The three-time Cy Young Award winner made a quick recovery after being scratched from Game 5 due to a nerve irritation near his neck.  It’s the first World Series crown for the Nationals in franchise history, including their time as the Montreal Expos from 1969 through 2004. The Nats had never won a playoff series before this year. Their playoff run occurred despite a 19-31 start to the campaign.  Yuli Gurriel hit a solo homer for the Astros, who were seeking their second championship in three seasons.  Stephen Strasburg was named the MVP of the series after going 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA. Strasburg was outstanding in helping the Nationals win Game 6 and extending the Fall Classic to the limit.

Steelers Overcome Slow Start, Drop Dolphins

October 29, 2019 3:43 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers are the latest team to hang an “L” on the Miami Dolphins.  James Conner ran for 145 yards and a touchdown, and Mason Rudolph overcame a shaky start to guide the Steelers’ offense to a 27-14 victory over the winless Dolphins. Rudolph completed 20 of 36 passes for 251 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown to rookie Diontae Johnson late in the second quarter and a 26-yard strike to JuJu Smith-Schuster in the third.  Former Dolphin Minkah Fitzpatrick picked off Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick twice and the 3-4 Steelers forced four turnovers in all to avoid an embarrassing loss.  The Dolphins failed to score after building a 14-point lead in the first quarter. Ryan Fitzpatrick passed for 190 yards with two touchdowns and two picks for Miami, which is 0-7 for the first time in eight years.

LSU #1 Ahead Of ‘Bama, Ohio State

October 28, 2019 3:56 am

UNDATED (AP) – The No. 1 vs. No. 2 game between Alabama and LSU in two weeks looks set, though the order of the Crimson Tide and Tigers changed in the AP Top 25 in one of the closet votes ever.  Heading into an off date for both teams, LSU flip-flopped with Alabama to become the new No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll. The Tigers received 1,476 points, two more than Alabama, for the closest margin between 1 and 2 since No. 1 Florida State was two points ahead of Auburn on Oct. 5, 2014.  No. 3 Ohio State was not far behind with 1,468 points. Eight points separating first from third is the fewest in the regular season since Dec. 3, 1979, when No. 1 Ohio State was 10 points ahead of No. 3 Southern California, with Oklahoma in between, two back of the Buckeyes.  Alabama received the most first-place votes this week with 21. LSU and Ohio State both got 17 first-place votes. No. 4 Clemson received seven first-place votes.
