No. 7 Penn State Beats UCLA 27-11

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Drew Allar threw for 237 yards with a touchdown and ran for another score to lead No. 7 Penn State to a 27-11 win over UCLA. Tyler Warren caught a touchdown pass in the last minute of the first half and Kaytron Allen ran one in from 1-yard out in the third quarter. Allar opened the scoring with a 1-yard run of his own in the second quarter. Ryan Barker made two field goals and the Penn State defense turned in another dominant second half to cap a four-game home stand. Penn State star running back Nick Singleton suited up, but didn’t play due to an undisclosed ailment.

Mets And Yankees Win Playoff Games On Same Day

NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time in 24 years, the New York Mets and New York Yankees have both won a playoff game on the same day. Brandon Nimmo and the Mets pulled off another late comeback, scoring five times in the eighth inning at Philadelphia to beat the rival Phillies 6-2 in the opener of their National League Division Series. About 2 1/2 hours later, the Yankees finished off a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the Bronx behind a clutch hit and an acrobatic catch from slumping left fielder Alex Verdugo in Game 1 of their American League Division Series. All five previous times the Mets and Yankees won postseason games on the same day came in 1999 and 2000.

Fort Cherry rolled post Cornell, setting up a showdown with Bishop Canevin for the top spot in the Black Hills Conference. Matt Sieg threw for three touchdowns, all to Shane Cornali in the win. Monessen’s win at Chartiers-Houston all but eliminates the upstart Bucs from contention.  West Greene rallied last past Bentworth to grab control of the third playoff spot in the the Tri-County South. Avella’s road win pulls the Eagles into a tie with Bentworth. Jeff-Morgan & California remain unbeaten in the league and on a collision course for Week 9 at California.

Wash High held off Keystone Oaks while Waynesburg beat Carlynton in overtime, creating a three-way tie for second a game back of unbeaten Seton-La Salle. Trinity lost at Thomas Jefferson while Ringgold fell at Laurel Highlands. TJ is unbeaten in the league, Ringgold is winless, and the other four teams are all 1-1 with three weeks left to play. Peters Township rallied in the second half to win at Moon after trailing 14-7 at intermission. Canon-McMillan blew a 17-point third quarter lead and lost a crucial Quad-County game at Seneca Valley, dealing a serious blow to the Big Macs playoff hopes.

Steelers And Cowboys Are Hurting In Different Ways

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys are both dealing with injuries heading into their Week 5 showdown. Pittsburgh’s offensive line has lost three players to season-ending injuries while Dallas will be without star linebacker Micah Parsons and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence. Pittsburgh is at 3-1 following a loss to Indianapolis in Week 4. Justin Fields will make his fifth straight start at quarterback while Russell Wilson recovers from a calf injury. Dallas snapped a two-game skid by beating the New York Giants in Week 4.

Cousins Throws For 509 Yards In Falcons OT Win

ATLANTA (AP) — Kirk Cousins threw for a career-high 509 yards and four touchdowns, the last of them a 45-yard scoring pass to KhaDarel Hodge in overtime that gave the Atlanta Falcons an improbable 36-30 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a wild fourth quarter that featured a blocked field goal, a fumble and an interception, Cousins and the Falcons got the ball back at their own 20 with 1:14 remaining in regulation and no timeouts, trailing 30-27. Cousins completed five passes to push Atlanta to the Buccaneers 29, then hustled to the line to spike the ball with a single second on the clock. Younghoe Koo knocked it through from 52 yards to force overtime. The Falcons won the coin toss in overtime and scored.

Alonso Home Run Sends Mets To NLDS

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off All-Star closer Devin Williams in the ninth inning and the New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 to win their NL Wild Card Series. With their latest thrilling comeback in the decisive Game 3 against Milwaukee, the Mets advanced in the playoffs for the first time since winning the 2015 National League pennant. They move on to a best-of-five Division Series beginning Saturday in Philadelphia against the NL East champion Phillies. It will be the first postseason meeting between the heated rivals.

AP Source; Reds Hiring Terry Francona As Manager

Terry Francona has been hired to manage the Cincinnati Reds, returning to the major leagues a year after he stepped down in Cleveland because of health reasons. A person familiar with the situation confirmed the move on condition of anonymity because the Reds had not announced the decision. Francona is replacing David Bell, who was fired by Cincinnati in the final days of his sixth season. Bell had a 409-456 record with the Reds. Francona, who turns 66 in April, played for Cincinnati in 1987. He hit .227 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 102 games.

Cherington; Shelton To Return As Pirates Manager

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington says the team needs to get better faster following a last-place finish in the NL Central. The Pirates posted a 76-86 record in 2024, the same mark the club had in 2023. Cherington fired hitting coach Andy Haines and bullpen coach Justin Meccage after the Pirates struggled to hit and close out games during a second-half freefall. Cherington says manager Derek Shelton will return in 2025 and that both he and Shelton know it’s their job to build around a young pitching rotation that includes NL Rookie of the Year candidate Paul Skenes.

Brewers Force Game Three Against Mets

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jackson Chourio tied the game in the eighth with his second homer of the night and Garrett Mitchell delivered a two-run shot later in the inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets that evened their NL Wild Card Series. The teams will play a decisive Game 3 on Thursday night. The Brewers will attempt to become the first team to rally win a best-of-three Wild Card Series after losing the opener since MLB went to this expanded playoff format in 2022.

Padres Rally To Beat Braves To Sweep Series

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Kyle Higashioka’s solo homer started a five-run rally against Max Fried with two outs in the second inning, and the San Diego Padres held on to sweep the Atlanta Braves with a 5-4 win in Game 2 of their NL Wild Card Series. Manny Machado added a two-run double with the bases loaded and Jackson Merrill, a top contender for NL Rookie of the Year, followed with a two-run triple as the sellout crowd of 47,705 — the largest in Petco Park history — roared. The Padres advance to face Shohei Ohtani and the NL West rival Dodgers in a National League Division Series beginning Saturday evening at top-seeded Los Angeles.
