Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Has Hamstring Tear

November 8, 2024 4:37 am

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation says Dak Prescott’s injured hamstring is partially torn away from the bone and surgery for the star quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys is possible. The injury is known as a partial avulsion and is likely to lead to an absence longer than the minimum of four games that would be required by putting Prescott on injured reserve. Former Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith missed 13 games two years after sustaining what is called a full avulsion in training camp. The complete tear of the hamstring off the bone requires surgery.

November 7, 2024 12:15 pm

NEW YORK (AP) — Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and fellow pitcher Luis Gil from the New York Yankees have been chosen rookies of the year by Baseball Digest. The top pick in the 2023 amateur draft, Skenes dazzled during his first major league season. After making his debut on May 11, he was such an immediate sensation that he was selected to start the All-Star Game for the National League on July 16 in Texas. The 22-year-old right-hander finished 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts. He struck out 170 batters and walked 32 in 133 innings. The 26-year-old Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the American League champions. He had 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings.

Jayden Daniels’ Breakout Season No Surprise

November 7, 2024 4:39 am

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Jayden Daniels has not thought much about his rookie year. The rest of the NFL has plenty to say about his breakout season. Daniels has quarterbacked the Washington Commanders to their first 7-2 start since 1996 and is now not only the favorite for the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award, but in the conversation as league MVP. And it’s not all that surprising for those who knew the Southern California native at Arizona State and at LSU, where he blossomed into the Heisman Trophy winner and second pick in the draft.

Soto May Look To Top Ohtani’s $700 Million

November 7, 2024 4:36 am

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Agent Scott Boras indicated Juan Soto may be seeking to top Shohei Ohtani’s record $700 million contract because he is three years younger than the Japanese two-way star was when he reached his deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Boras gave a pun-filled, 48-minute assessment of the market at the general managers meetings on Wednesday, calling Soto “the Mona Lisa of the museum.” Boras said only a handful of players have matched Soto’s accomplishments at age 26, mentioning Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and Ted Williams. Boras says Soto is “in an age category that separates him from all.”

John Calipari Wins Arkansas Debut

November 7, 2024 4:40 am

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — John Calipari won his debut as Arkansas coach when the 16th-ranked Razorbacks held off a second-half rally by Lipscomb and pulled away for a 76-60 victory. Freshman guard Boogie Fland scored 17 points and Florida Atlantic transfer Johnell Davis added 15 for Arkansas. Calipari, who left Southeastern Conference rival Kentucky after last season, had previously been booed incessantly whenever stepping foot in Bud Walton Arena. That changed when Eric Musselman, who coached Arkansas to three Sweet 16s in five seasons, departed last spring and Calipari bolted from the bluegrass of Kentucky for the foothills of the Ozarks. His new team looked a lot like his old ones.

Steelers Acquire WR Mike Williams From Jets

November 6, 2024 4:02 am

Mike Williams struggled to establish a rapport with Aaron Rodgers on the New York Jets. The Pittsburgh Steelers think the veteran wide receiver will fit in just fine with Russell Wilson and their offense. The teams announced Tuesday that the Jets agreed to trade Williams to the Steelers for a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft, pending a physical. Williams struggled with production and building an on-field connection with Rodgers in his first season with New York. He became expendable when the Jets acquired Davante Adams from Las Vegas last month. He had 12 catches for 166 yards in nine games.
