This Week’s Championship Classics

Over the past 10 years, WJPA has carried a dozen state championship games involving Washington County high school teams.  This month, we’re re-playing those games, just as they aired originally.  We’ll feature two baseball championship games and a girls basketball title tilt this week.  Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday night through the month of April, we’ll open up the championship game archives.  Our coverage will include state championship games in girls basketball, baseball, softball, Team Tournament wrestling and hockey. NHL; Oilers’ Cave Out Of Surgery, Remains In Coma

UNDATED (AP) – The Edmonton Oilers say forward Colby Cave has undergone emergency surgery after suffering a brain bleed.  The team posted on Twitter that doctors removed a colloid cyst that was causing pressure on Cave’s brain Tuesday. He remains in a medically induced coma at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.  Cave’s wife, Emily, said earlier on Instagram that doctors were “fighting to keep him alive” in surgery.  The 25-year-old Cave scored one goal in 11 games with Edmonton this season.

Detroit Tigers Star Al Kaline Dies

DETROIT (AP) – Al Kaline, who spent his entire 22-season Hall of Fame career with the Detroit Tigers and was known affectionately as “Mr. Tiger,” has died. He was 85.  John Morad, a friend of Kaline’s, confirmed to The Associated Press that he died Monday at his home in Michigan. Morad, who spoke first to the Detroit Free Press, said he’d been in contact with Kaline’s son.  Kaline was the youngest player to win the American League batting title in 1955 at age 20 with a .340 batting average. The right fielder was a 15-time All-Star, won 10 Gold Gloves and was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1980 in his first year of eligibility.  The beloved No. 6 later sat behind a microphone as a Tigers broadcaster from 1976 to 2001 and was also a special assistant to the general manager.

NFL Draft To Be Conducted In Virtual Format

The NFL draft will be conducted in a virtual format, with team personnel working from their homes. The draft originally was scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, but the NFL canceled all public events last month as a safeguard against the coronavirus. In a memo sent to the 32 teams and obtained by The Associated Press, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell outlined procedures for the April 23-25 draft. The guidelines include no group gatherings.

British Open Canceled; Major Rescheduling for Masters, PGA, US Open

Golf will have three major championships, at most, this year.  The Royal & Ancients announced the cancellation of the British Open in July because of the spread of COVID-19. The R&A is pushing the British Open rotation back one year, staying at Royal St. George’s. The Masters has been rescheduled to Nov. 12-15, just two weeks before Thanksgiving at Augusta National.  The PGA Championship returns to August while the US Open plans to stay at Winged Foot Spet. 17-20 as of now. Those schedules are all dependent on health officials saying it’s safe to resume given the novel coronavirus. The Tour Championship would end on Labor Day.

2020 Basketball Hall Of Fame Class Announced

UNDATED (AP) – Kobe Bryant’s resume has yet another entry to prove his greatness. He’s now officially a Hall of Famer. Bryant and fellow NBA greats Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett headline a nine-person group announced Saturday of this year’s class of enshrinees into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. They got into the Hall in their first year of eligibility, as did WNBA great Tamika Catchings. Two-time NBA champion coach Rudy Tomjanovich, longtime Baylor women’s coach Kim Mulkey, 1,000-game winner Barbara Stevens of Bentley and three-time Final Four coach Eddie Sutton were also selected. All eight finalists who were announced in February were chosen to get in by the panel of 24 voters. Former FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann is also headed to the Hall. He was selected as a direct-elect by the international committee.

NFL Medical Officer Unsure About Season

UNDATED (AP) – Days after the NFL revealed its hopes of conducting a normal regular season and playoffs, its chief medical officer is warning that nothing is a certainty during the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Allen Sills, a neurosurgeon who has been with the NFL since 2017, says he and other league and team medical personnel have been in constant communication with health officials throughout the country, looking at the same data they are using to make public recommendations. The NFL also has consulted with the other major sports leagues and the players’ union.

NFL; Henry Accepts Franchise Tender

UNDATED (AP) – Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry has signed a franchise tender that puts him under contract for the 2020 season as the two sides work toward reaching a long-term deal with the 2019 NFL rushing leader.  The Titans gave him a franchise tag March 16, a move that means he will be paid $10.2 million in the 2020 season unless they sign him to a long-term deal by July 15.  Henry rushed for an NFL-leading 1,540 yards and averaged 4.8 yards per carry while earning his first Pro Bowl invitation last season.

Wimbledon Cancels For First Time Since World War II

(AP) – Wimbledon has been canceled for the first time since World War II because of the coronavirus pandemic. The All England Club announced after an emergency meeting that the oldest Grand Slam tournament in tennis would not be held in 2020. Wimbledon was scheduled to be played on the outskirts of London from June 29 to July 12. It now joins the growing list of sports events scrapped in 2020 because of the COVID-19 outbreak. That includes the Tokyo Olympics, the NCAA men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments and the European soccer championship. The last time Wimbledon was called off was 1945.

MLB; Veteran Players To Get $4,775 Per Day

NEW YORK (AP) – Gerrit Cole, Mike Trout and other veteran major leaguers will receive $4,775 per day in advance pay for the first 60 days of the season during the stoppage caused by the coronavirus, a total of $286,500.  That’s just 2.5% percent of the $193,548 the New York Yankees pitcher and Los Angeles Angels outfielder were scheduled to earn each day from their $36 million salaries, tied for the major league high.   The daily total was obtained by The Associated Press after it was confirmed by MLB and the players’ association following their agreement on how to proceed during the stoppage.
