Pirates Trade Outfielder Jarrod Dyson To White Sox

The Pittsburgh Pirates today traded outfielder Jarrod Dyson to the Chicago White Sox. In exchange, the Pirates will receive an additional capacity in its 2019-2020 International Signing Bonus Pool, allowing them to spend an additional $243,300 in this year’s International Signing Period. The announcement was made by Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington.

PAC Postpones All Fall Sports; Golf Moved to Spring

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Presidents’ Council has voted to postpone all fall 2020 intercollegiate athletic competition in response to the evolving Coronavirus pandemic. The decision, based on the NCAA’s Division III Administrative Committee announcement on August 20 recommending that member schools not compete in the fall term to avoid potential increased health and safety risks, was made during an Aug. 26 virtual meeting of the PAC Presidents’ Council. The seasons for men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf are being planned for the spring 2021 semester. The PAC had also explored moving the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field seasons to the fall. PAC outdoor track and field programs have typically held their traditional seasons in the spring.

Pirates Sweep Doubleheader In St Louis

Cole Tucker singled home in the go-ahead run in extra innings and the Pirates beat the Cardinals, 4-3 in Game 1. The seven-inning game went to extras tied at one before the Bucs scored three times in the eighth, including an RBI single by Bryan Reynolds and an error by third baseman Brad Miller. Chad Kuhl delivered six innings of one-run ball for Pittsburgh. The Pirates came away with a sweep as Erik Gonzalez and Adam Frazier provided RBI singles in a 2-0 decision over the Redbirds. Cody Ponce earned his first big league victory by pitching into the sixth inning of his first start, limiting St. Louis to five hits.

MLB; Games Postponed In Players Protest

UNDATED (AP) – Seven more Major League Baseball games have been postponed. Oakland’s game at Texas along with Philadelphia at Washington, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at Detroit, Colorado at Arizona, Miami at the New York Mets and Boston at the Blue Jays were postponed a day after three games weren’t played in response to the police shooting of a Black man in Wisconsin. Teams were left to make decisions for themselves without much apparent guidance from MLB. Some games were officially postponed a few hours before the first pitch. Others like Colorado-Arizona appeared to be on schedule until a few minutes before first pitch.

2nd Day Of NBA Playoff Games Halted

UNDATED (AP) – An unprecedented walkout over racial injustice has postponed a second day of the NBA playoffs.   The NBA decided to postpone three more games Thursday to join the three that weren’t played Wednesday, when players from six NBA teams decided not to play postseason games in a boycott that quickly reverberated across other professional leagues. The Milwaukee Bucks initiated the action in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin.   NBA spokesman Mike Bass said the league hoped to resume Friday or Saturday.
President Donald Trump criticized the NBA’s action, telling reporters that the NBA has become like “a political organization.”  The WNBA also called off its three games for a second night.

NHL Postpones Stanley Cup Playoff Games

The NHL postponed its Stanley Cup playoff games scheduled for Thursday and Friday in response to the Blake shooting. The decision was reached by the league and the NHL Players’ Association, and was made after members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance asked the NHL to postpone the playing of games. San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane says the HDA strongly feels this sends a clear message that human rights take priority over sports.

Roethlisberger Ready To Go

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says his surgically repaired right elbow feels better than it has in years. Roethlisberger missed most of the 2019 season after tearing three flexor tendons in his right elbow in Week 2 against Seattle. The 38-year-old says the elbow had been bothering him for quite some time but now he is able to throw pain-free. While the team is trying to keep Roethlisberger on a “pitch count” as he prepares for his 17th season, he’s taken on a heavier workload this camp than he has in previous years.

White Sox Hit 4 Homers; Rip Pirates 10-3

CHICAGO (AP) –  Jose Abreu hit his seventh homer in five games, Dallas Keuchel pitched six dominant innings, and the surging Chicago White Sox pounded the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-3 for their ninth win in 10 games. Abreu’s 12th home run was Chicago’s fourth of the game and broke it open. Eloy Jimenez, Danny Mendick and Edwin Encarnacion also homered for Chicago, which leads the AL with 60 home runs. Keuchel (5-2) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out seven in his third straight win. Trevor Williams (1-5) took the loss and Jacob Stallings had a two-run single and Erik Gonzalez hit a solo homer for Pittsburgh.

Games Called Off Amid Player Protest

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) – Three NBA games were expected to be played on Wednesday. The players thought otherwise.  The games were postponed as players around the league chose to boycott in their strongest statement yet against racial injustice.  The dramatic series of moves began when the Milwaukee Bucks declined to take the court against Orlando in the early game. The state of Wisconsin has been rocked in recent days by the shooting by police officers of Jacob Blake, a Black man. Players had been discussing boycotting games in the bubble after the shooting of Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The Rockets and Thunder were slated to play, as were the Lakers against the Trail Blazers. The NBA said all three games would be rescheduled, yet did not say when.  The WNBA followed suit by postponing its Wednesday games. Five of the six scheduled MLS games were postponed, as were three Major League Baseball games.

NHL; Flyers Even Series With Islanders

TORONTO (AP) – Phillippe Myers scored 2:40 into overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday, tying the second-round playoff series at a game apiece. The Islanders overall a 3-0 first-period deficit, with Jean-Gabriel Pageau getting the tying goal with 2:09 left in regulation. Myers ended it quickly, connecting on a shot from the right point that glanced off the stick of the Islanders’ Anders Lee on the way in. Kevin Hayes scored twice in the first period for Philadelphia, Sean Couturier also had a goal, and Carter Hart made 31 saves. Lee and Anthony Beauvillier also scored for the Islanders. Semyon Varlamov had seven saves before he was benched late in the first period. Thomas Greiss finished with 20 stops in relief.
