Michigan Beats Penn State Without Harbaugh

November 12, 2023 6:46 am

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — No. 2 Michigan played without coach Jim Harbaugh, beating No. 9 Penn State after a judge didn’t issue a ruling Saturday on the school’s attempt to temporarily lift the Big Ten Conference’s penalty against the Wolverines for a sign-stealing scheme. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said 90 minutes before kickoff that Harbaugh wouldn’t be at Beaver Stadium with the team. Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore served as acting head coach and led the Wolverines to a 24-15 victory. Manuel says a hearing in the school’s lawsuit challenging the Big Ten’s punishment of Harbaugh is scheduled for Nov. 17.

Judge To Rule If Harbaugh May Coach

November 11, 2023 3:54 am

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — No. 2 Michigan plays its biggest game of the season so far at No. 9 Penn State on Saturday. Whether Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh will be leading his team on the sideline was is in the hands of a judge. The Big Ten banned Harbaugh from coaching the rest of the Wolverines’ final regular-season games as punishment for a sign-stealing scheme. The school almost immediately asked a judge for a court order putting the penalty on hold.

Penguins Beat Kings To Complete Perfect Road Trip

November 10, 2023 4:42 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After having a goal waved off in overtime, Bryan Rust quickly made sure it didn’t happen twice. His wraparound goal with 1:15 remaining on the clock in overtime gave the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings, giving them a sweep of their California road trip for the first time since 1996-97. Rust appeared to put in his own rebound 19 seconds earlier, but the goal was waved off when he was ruled offside. Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist as he became the 11th player in NHL history with 450 career multi-point games. He also extended his point streak to seven games.

NFL; Bears Beat Panthers

November 10, 2023 4:44 am

CHICAGO (AP) — D’Onta Foreman ran for a touchdown and the Chicago Bears boosted their shot at the top pick in the draft, beating the Carolina Panthers 16-13 on Thursday night. The Bears (3-7) also boosted their chances at the No. 1 pick because they have Carolina’s first-rounder in 2024. They acquired the pick along with Moore last March for the top selection this year. The Panthers (1-8) are tied with Arizona — which plays Atlanta on Sunday — for the worst record in the NFL. Foreman gave the Bears a 16-10 lead in the third quarter with a 4-yard run. Chicago was clinging to a three-point lead with 1:40 remaining when Carolina’s Eddy Pineiro attempted a 59-yard field goal. The ball landed well short.

Virginia Running Back Regains Movement After Hard Hit

November 10, 2023 4:45 am

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Virginia officials say running back Perris Jones has regained movement in all of his extremities after being immobilized on a flat board and carted off the field after being injured on a play late in the third quarter against No. 11 Louisville on Thursday night. Football spokesman Jim Daves said early Friday in a text that Jones will remain at UofL Hospital overnight. Jones caught a 7-yard pass from Anthony Colandrea and fumbled after being hit on his helmet by Cam’Ron Kelly with several other Cardinals nearby. Malik Washington scooped up the ball near the right sideline and dashed down the field for the go-ahead touchdown to make 21-14. Players from both teams knelt for about 15 minutes as Jones was treated and gently lifted onto the board with his head wrapped between two pads.

Steelers Pickens Talks About Frustration

November 9, 2023 4:33 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens says he needs to not let frustration get the best of him. Pickens has been limited in recent weeks while opponents search for ways to stop him. That frustration may have bubbled over in a victory over Tennessee when Pickens didn’t appear to be in the mood to celebrate after teammate Diontae Johnson caught the game-winning touchdown. Pickens briefly deleted all of the Steelers-related content from his Instagram page shortly after the game, though Pickens says the “scrubbing” of the page had nothing to do with football. Some of the Steelers content has been restored.

Michigan; Commissioner Doesn’t Have Discipline Authority

November 9, 2023 4:36 am

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The University of Michigan warned Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti about overstepping his authority and rushing to judgement about an alleged sign-stealing scheme, saying he can’t discipline coach Jim Harbaugh under the conference’s sportsmanship policy. Two people who have seen Michigan’s response to the Big Ten’s notification of potential discipline shared some of its contents with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share details from the letter. Michigan’s letter states that action can’t be taken by the Big Ten if a formal decision has not been made about whether rules were violated.
