PIAA announced Wednesday afternoon that Dr. Bob Lombardi will retire at the end of the year. Mark Byers will succeed him as Executive Director. Lombardi joined the PIAA executive staff in 1988 and has been the Executive Director since 2012, following the retirement of Brad Cashman. The East Stroudsburg University graduate turns 70 in mid-November and said he is looking forward to time with family. In its release, the Association highlighted a number of accomplishments during Lombardi’s tenure including becoming the nation’s 4th largest state by way of student athlete participation, expansion in the number of classifications in ten sports, the addition of additional opportunities for girls through Competitive Spirit, Flag Football and Wrestling, the implementation of the Competition Formula and transfer rules, and the integration of Unified Special Olympics championships in Bocce and Track & Field.
